TOP CAPS FACTS
The Great 800

  • Alex Ovechkin scored his 18th, 19th and 20th goals of the season on Dec. 13 at Chicago to become the third player in NHL history to reach the 800-goal mark, joining Hall of Famers Gordie Howe (801) and Wayne Gretzky (894).
  • Ovechkin, 37, reached the 800-goal mark in his 1,305th career game, the second-fewest games required to reach the milestone in NHL history (Gretzky: 1,116 GP). Howe scored his 800th career goal in his 1,748th career game at the age of 51.
  • Ovechkin went from 700 to 800 goals in 162 games, the fewest games required to make that leap for any member of the 800-goal club (Gretzky: 231 GP; Howe: 256 GP). It is tied for the third-fewest games Ovechkin has required to go from one 100-goal milestone to another in his career (100 to 200 goals: 130 GP; 600 to 700 goals: 155 GP; 300 to 400 goals: 162 GP).
  • Ovechkin’s 100 goals in 162 games since scoring his 700th career goal on Feb. 22, 2020, equates to a 0.62 goals-per-game average, slightly higher than his overall career average (0.61 G/GP). Gretzky’s goals-per-game rate from goal 700 to 800 was 0.44, while Howe’s was 0.39.
  • Ovechkin is now two goals shy of passing Howe (801) for second on the NHL’s all-time goals list.
  • Ovechkin has averaged 0.61 goals-per-game during his 18-year career, the seventh-highest rate in NHL history among players with at least 200 goals. Howe averaged 0.45 goals-per-game during his career, while Gretzky averaged 0.60.
  • Since turning 35-years-old on Sept. 17, 2020, Ovechkin has nearly maintained his career goals per game average, scoring 94 goals in 156 games played (0.60 G/GP). That marks the highest rate among players following their 35th birthday in NHL history.
  • Ovechkin scored his 787th career goal on Nov. 5 versus Arizona, passing Howe (786) for the most goals with one franchise in NHL history and scored his 122nd career game-winning goal on Oct. 24 at New Jersey to pass Howe for the second-most game-winning goals.
  • Ovechkin, who has scored 20 goals in 34 games this season, recorded his 29th career hat trick against Chicago to reach the 800-goal mark, passing Marcel Dionne and Bobby Hull (28) for the sixth most hat tricks in NHL history.
  • Ovechkin has reached the 20-goal mark in each of his 18 NHL seasons and his 18 20-goal seasons are the sixth-most in NHL history. Ovechkin is on pace to score 48 goals this season. Should Ovechkin reach the 50-goal mark, it would mark his 10th career 50-goal season, passing Gretzky and Mike Bossy (9) for the most in NHL history. In addition, Ovechkin would pass Gretzky (12) for the most 40-goal seasons in NHL history and tie Mike Gartner (17) for the most 30-goal seasons in NHL history.

TEAM NOTES
VISITING THE RANGERS
Tonight, the New York Islanders visit Metropolitan Division rival, New York Rangers, for the third and final time this season. The Islanders captured victories in each of the first two meetings between the two teams this season, including a 3-0 victory at UBS Arena on October 26, and a 4-3 decision at Madison Square Garden on November 8. It will be the 289th meeting between the Islanders and Rangers in NHL history. The Islanders begin their seventh of 14 back-to-back series they will play this season, and their third this month. The Islanders have won each of their last five games at Madison Square Garden, and have a 6-1-0 record on MSG ice since the beginning of the 2020-21 season. The last time the Islanders visited the Garden was November 8, when Adam Pelech, Anders Lee and Brock Nelson scored three straight to help the Islanders mount a 4-3 comeback win. Islanders forward Zach Parise leads active Islanders in career points against the Rangers, with 45 (18 goals, 27 assists) in 53 career games against them. The last time these teams met, Parise tallied two assists to help the Islanders earn a 4-3 comeback victory at MSG. Parise’s 18 goals are tied with Steven Stamkos for fifth among active NHLers against the Rangers. The 38-year-old tallied a goal and an assist in the Islanders’ last win, December 17 in Las Vegas. Mathew Barzal has recorded more points against the Rangers than any other team he has faced in his career, tallying 31 (eight goals, 23 assists) in 26 matchups. The 25-year-old has found the scoresheet in his last five straight games against the Rangers (one goal, five assists).

SOROKIN
Islanders netminder Ilya Sorokin earned his third shutout of the season and 13th of his career on Monday night, when the Islanders fell in a 1-0 shootout decision to the Colorado Avalanche. It was the Islanders’ fourth team shutout of the sesaon, leading the NHL. Sorokin turned away all 46 shots he faced, the second-most he has made in a single contest this season (49, November 23). It was the fourth time this season he has made more than 40 saves. The Mezhdurechensk, RUS native’s 46 saves on Monday tie Steve Mason (Philadelphia, November 14, 2014) for the most saves by a goaltender in a 1-0 shootout loss in NHL history. Sorokin leads all NHL netminders in shutouts since the beginning of the 2021-22 season, with 10. Sorokin enters tonight’s matchup with a 3-1-0 record against the New York Rangers. The last time Sorokin faced the Rangers was October 26, when he made 41 saves on 41 shots faced to record his first shutout of the 2022-23 campaign.

SHOOTOUT
Monday night in Denver, the Islanders fell to the Colorado Avalanche, 1-0, in their second shootout in their last four games. It was their first 1-0 loss since November 26, 2021 against the Pittsburgh Penguins, and it was their first 1-0 shootout loss since April 22, 2021 against the Washington Capitals. It was only the fifth time in franchise history that the Islanders brought a scoreless game to the shootout. They are 2-3 in 1-0 shootout decisions in club history.

18

Islanders forward Anthony Beauvillier scored his sixth goal of the season Friday night against the Arizona Coyotes. Beauvillier is one goal shy of his career 100th, and he would become the 11th player from his 2015 NHL Draft class to reach the milestone. A native of Sorel-Tracy, QC, Beauvillier has recorded more points against the Rangers than any other opponent he has faced in his career, by a ten-point margin. Beauvillier has 23 points (13 goals, 10 assists) in 26 career matchups against the Rangers.

ON THE ROAD
Tonight’s matchup is the fifth in a five-game road trip for the Islanders, the longest in their schedule this season. They are 1-1-2 on the trip so far. Following tonight’s game, the Islanders return home to host the Florida Panthers before the three day Christmas break. The Islanders enter tonight’s matchup with a 9-7-2 record on the road, and look to earn their tenth road win of the season. Dobson enters tonight’s game seven points shy of his career 100th. Dobson is tied with Anders Lee and Zach Parise for second-most goals on the Islanders, behind Brock Nelson’s 15 tallies. Dobson is also one of just two Islander defensemen in franchise history to record 27 goals before their 23rd birthday (joining Denis Potvin). Dobson is three goals shy of his career-best, 13, set last season.

OPENING THE SCORE
The Islanders have opened the score in seven of their last eight victories, dating back to November 14 in Ottawa. This season, they are 12-3-0 when scoring the first goal, and eight of the Islanders’ nine road victories so far this season have seen them score first. Holmstrom is the 389th Islander in club history to record a goal, and he is the Islanders’ lone NHL debutante so far this season. According to NHL Stats, Kochetkov is just the sixth rookie goaltender in the last 20 years to record a point streak of double-digit games, joining Michael Garnett (ATL, 12/9/05-1/2/06: 7-0-3 in 10 GP), Antero Niittymaki (PHI, 12/17/05-1/6/06: 9-0-2 in 11 GP), Jimmy Howard (DET, 3/11/10-4/11/10: 13-0-2 in 15 GP), Sergei Bobrovsky (PHI, 10/26/10-11/15/10: 9-0-1 in 10 GP) and Jeremy Swayman (BOS, 2/12/22-3/12/22: 9-0-1 in 10 GP). He has also earned a 9-0-4 record in 13 road appearances during his NHL/Hurricanes career, joining Andrew Hammond (OTT, 2/25/15-11/7/15: 11-0-3 in 14 GP) as just the second netminder in NHL history to register a point in each of his first 13 career road games.

METRO STARS
In addition to their 12-game point streak and 10-game road point streak, the Hurricanes have won each of their last six games (12/10-12/20), tied with MIN for the NHL’s longest active win streak. Carolina has improved to 20-6-6 (46 points) in 2022-23, passing NJD (21-9-2, 44 points) for the Metropolitan Division lead. The Hurricanes are now set to take on the Penguins, who sit in third place in the Metro with 42 points (19-9-4) and have lost just two of their last 10 games (11/20-12/29: 8-1-1), both against Carolina.

8 GOING ON 800
Brent Burns registered two power-play assists vs. DAL (12/17) and paces all Hurricanes skaters with 18 assists, nine power-play assists and 11 power-play points in 2022-23. He has posted four multi-assist games this season, which trail only Sebastian Aho (5) for the team high. Burns has now tallied 799 points (231g, 568a) in his NHL career and needs one more point to become the 18th defenseman in NHL history and the eighth player from the 2003 NHL Draft class to reach the 800-point plateau.

BETTER CALL STAAL
Jordan Staal scored the game-winning goal vs. NJD (12/20), giving him three points (2g, 1a) and two game-winning goals in his last two games (12/18-12/20). This is just the second time in his NHL career that he has scored game-winning goals in back-to-back contests, and the first such instance during his Hurricanes career (1/12/11-1/15/11 w/ PIT: 2-3—5). Staal has now scored a team-high five goals in nine games in December after lighting the lamp four times in 23 games to open the season. With two points (1g, 1a) against the Penguins on Sunday, he has earned eight points (4g, 4a) in his last six games against his former team, including three multi-point outings. Staal has now skated in 693 games with Carolina, and in his next game, he will also tie Rod Brind’Amour (2000-10: 694 GP) for the fifth-most games played in franchise history and the third-most since relocation.

HAPPY HAANUKKAH
Calvin de Haan tallied an assist vs. NJD (12/20), giving him an assist in three of his last four games (12/15-12/20: 3a). Tuesday’s game marked his 99th game with the Hurricanes over two stints in Carolina (74 GP in 2018-19, 25 GP in 2022-23), and in his next game, he will become the 38th defenseman to play 100 games with the team since relocation. De Haan’s 100 games played would tie Haydn Fleury (2018-21) for just the sixth-most of any Hurricanes blueliner over the last five seasons (2018-23), yet his 231 hits in those contests rank second among any Carolina defenseman over that span (Dougie Hamilton, 2018-21: 264).

JESPERI HOURS
Jesperi Kotkaniemi opened the scoring just 20 seconds into the first period tonight, marking the Hurricanes’ fastest goal from the start of any game since 2/16/20 (Trevor van Riemsdyk vs. EDM, 0:12). He has now recorded 99 points (38g, 61a) in his NHL career and needs just one more tally to become the sixth player from the 2018 NHL Draft class to register 100 career points.

Most career points, 2018 NHL Draft class:
Andrei Svechnikov (Carolina): 106-132—238
Brady Tkachuk (OTT): 103-125—228
Rasmus Dahlin (BUF): 31-156—197
Quinn Hughes (VAN): 19-173—192
Joel Farabee (PHI): 50-59—109
Jesperi Kotkaniemi (MTL/Carolina): 38-61—99

ALL ABOUT THAT NOESE
Stefan Noesen scored a goal vs. NJD (12/20) and has now tallied a point in four consecutive games (12/15-12/20: 3g, 1a), marking the second-longest point streak of his NHL career (12/5/17-12/14/17: 2g, 4a in 5 GP w/ NJD). After tallying seven points through his first 19 games of the season (10/14-11/23: 2g, 5a), he has recorded nine points in his last 12 games (11/25-12/20: 4g, 5a) and ranks tied for the team lead in scoring over that stretch.

GO SHORTY
Teuvo Teravainen scored Carolina’s second shorthanded goal of the season against the Devils on Tuesday (also Brady Skjei, 11/3 at TBL), with assists from Jaccob Slavin and Jesper Fast. Teravainen has now scored five career shorthanded goals (all with Carolina), including a team- and career-high two shorthanded goals in 2021-22. He has registered 13 shorthanded points (5g, 8a) in his Hurricanes career and ranks tied with Erik Cole (2001-08, 2009-11: 8g, 5a) for the fifth-most shorthanded points and with Brock McGinn (2015-21) for the ninth-most shorthanded goals in team history (since relocation), respectively. Slavin has now tallied 12 shorthanded points (2g, 10a) in his NHL/Hurricanes career, marking the most shorthanded assists and points by any defenseman in franchise history and tied for the third-most shorthanded points of any NHL blueliner since he entered the league in 2015-16. He also added an even-strength assist on Tuesday, marking his first multi-point game in 2022-23. Fast has earned six shorthanded points (2g, 4a) in his NHL career, including two shorthanded assists with Carolina, and he has now posted an assist in back-to-back games (12/18-12/20: 2a) and in four of his last six contests (12/3-12/20: 4a).

Most shorthanded points by a defenseman, since 2015-16:
Mark Giordano (CGY/SEA/TOR): 11-7—18
Jacob Trouba (WPG/NYR): 3-10—13
Brent Burns (SJS/Carolina): 2-10—12
Jaccob Slavin (Carolina): 2-10—12
Mattias Ekholm (NSH): 3-7—10
Esa Lindell (DAL): 4-6—10

KEEPING IT 100
Seth Jarvis skated in his 100th career NHL/Hurricanes game vs. NJD (12/20). Selected 13th overall by Carolina in the 2020 NHL Draft, he became the sixth player from his draft class to reach the milestone. Jarvis registered an assist in the first period and has now tallied 56 career points (23g, 32a), passing Andrei Svechnikov (2018-19: 27-28—55) for the fifth-most points of any skater in team history (since relocation) through his first 100 career games. Only Jeff Skinner (2010-11: 38-43—81), Sebastian Aho (2016-17: 27-36—63), Eric Staal (2003-05: 25-37—62) and Martin Necas (2017-21: 23-37—63) tallied more points through their first 100 NHL contests.

GOING BACK-TO-BACK
The Hurricanes are opening their sixth of 14 sets of back-to-back games in 2022-23. Carolina is currently 2-2-1 in the first game and 5-0-0 in the second game of back-to-backs this season.

TEAM NOTES
‘TIS THE SEASON
Pittsburgh enters tonight’s game as one of the hottest teams in the NHL. Dating back to November 9, Pittsburgh has points in 17 of its last 20 games overall (15-3-2). Since this 20-game stretch began, no one has picked up more points than the Penguins (32), and they have vaulted from 27th in the league standings to eighth. Excluding a stretch where the Penguins were winless for seven games (0-6-1) from Oct. 24-Nov. 5, Pittsburgh has gone 19-3-3 on the year. Head Coach Mike Sullivan and the team are looking to extend their record-setting playoff streak to 17 seasons, and have put themselves in prime position to do so heading into the Christmas break. Over the last five full seasons dating back to 2015-16 (excluding 2019-20 and 20-20 campaigns), nearly 79% of teams that hold a playoff spot on December 25 have qualified for the postseason (63-80).

WIN-TER WONDERLAND
The Penguins have won each of their last six home games, which trails only Minnesota (7) for the longest active home winning streak in the league. This season, there has only been two home winning streaks longer than the Penguins current streak (Boston, 14 and Minnesota, 7). It’s the longest home winning streak since the team won eight-straight home games last season from Dec. 11, 2021-Jan. 25, 2022. Sidney Crosby leads all Penguins with 23 home points (12G-11A) in 15 games. He’s only been held off the scoresheet twice in 15 home games, and his 0.80 goals-per-game average at home is sixth in the league:

Over the last five years (2018-22), Pittsburgh has gone 36-7-1 in games during the month of December. Pittsburgh’s .889 winning percentage this month is on pace to be the highest in the calendar month of December in team history.

NFL and Google partner to bring NFL Sunday Ticket on YouTube TV and YouTube Primetime Channels

0

Starting with the 2023 season, all out of market Sunday afternoon NFL games will be available on YouTube TV & YouTube Primetime Channels

The National Football League today announced a multi-year agreement with Google granting YouTube TV and YouTube Primetime Channels the right to exclusively distribute NFL Sunday Ticket to consumers in the United States starting with the 2023 NFL season. This strategic partnership will provide fans greater access to NFL Sunday Ticket while tapping into the best of YouTube’s technology and product innovation.

“We’re excited to bring NFL Sunday Ticket to YouTube TV and YouTube Primetime Channels and usher in a new era of how fans across the United States access, watch and follow the NFL,” NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said. “For a number of years we have been focused on increased digital distribution of our games and this strategic partnership is yet another example of us looking towards the future and building the next generation of NFL fans.”

“YouTube has long been a home for football fans, whether they’re streaming live games, keeping up with their home team, or watching the best plays in highlights,” said Susan Wojcicki, CEO of YouTube. “Through this expanded partnership with the NFL, viewers will now also be able to experience the game they love in compelling and innovative ways through YouTube TV or YouTube Primetime Channels. We’re excited to continue our work with the NFL to make YouTube a great place for sports lovers everywhere.”

Starting next season, NFL Sunday Ticket will be available on two of YouTube’s growing subscription businesses as an add-on package on YouTube TV and standalone a-la-carte on YouTube Primetime Channels.

Consisting of all out-of-market Sunday regular-season NFL games (based on viewer’s location) broadcast on FOX and CBS, NFL Sunday Ticket allows fans in the United States the ability to follow all their favorite teams and players no matter where they live. Updated NFL Sunday Ticket product features and functionality will be announced ahead of the 2023 NFL season.

NFL Sunday Ticket launched in 1994 and has been distributed on DirecTV’s satellite service since its inception. The NFL and YouTube will work together to determine additional ways to support distribution of NFL Sunday Ticket in commercial establishments such as bars and restaurants.

The NFL and Google have been partners since the League first launched its official NFL channel on YouTube in 2015. Since then, the NFL YouTube channel has grown to more than 10 million subscribers who enjoy clips, highlights, game-day compilations and exclusive original content series like NFL Follies and NFL Films’ two-time Emmy winning flagship series Gameday All-Access, a mic’d up players show bringing fans inside the huddle and on the sidelines for exclusive access during the game.

Since 2015, the NFL’s presence on YouTube has increased to include channels for all 32 NFL clubs, as well as ten official League channels including NFL Films, NFL Network, and the NFL’s Hispanic channel, Mundo NFL. Since the start of the NFL/YouTube partnership, NFL content on YouTube has generated billions of views.

In 2020, the NFL expanded its partnership with a carriage agreement to bring NFL Network and NFL RedZone to YouTube TV subscribers. Under the expanded relationship, the carriage agreement has been extended.

YouTube remains an important outlet for NFL fans globally to access NFL content, and this new agreement will see a broader commitment to work together to engage with the NFL’s international fanbase. This will include increased content on the NFL channel, the creation of a NFL International show available on the YouTube platform, and the creation of a creator content program for select top YouTube creators globally.

“As the ways fans enjoy NFL football evolve in a changing media landscape, partnerships with innovators like YouTube will ensure that more games are available to more fans, said Robert Kraft, Owner of the New England Patriots and Chairman of the NFL’s Media Committee. “This partnership will grow our game for future generations and allow them to follow their favorite sport.”

Additionally, as part of the agreement, YouTube and the NFL will facilitate exclusive access to official content and attendance opportunities for select YouTube Creators at key NFL tentpole events. YouTube is now also the presenting sponsor of both Back Together Saturday as well as NFL Kickoff WeekendBack Together Saturday is the League’s official start to training camp when all 32 NFL clubs hold practices with club-led fan events. YouTube’s presenting sponsorship of NFL Kickoff Weekend marks the first time a League partner will have a presence from the kickoff of the season on Thursday night through the weekend games and Monday night, driving excitement for the start of the season.

ABOUT THE BUCS

  • ETSU enters with a 11-3 record, including wins in the last three games.
  • The 11 non-conference wins are tied for the most since the 1983-84 season — the same season the Southern Conference began sponsoring a women’s basketball championship. A win tomorrow would set the new modern era record for non-conference wins at 12.
  • After the first two losses of the season, ETSU went on to enjoy four-game win streaks. A win tomorrow would mark the third four-game win streak of the season.
  • Last time out, ETSU used a 17-0 second half run to defeat Longwood by a 69-52 final inside Brooks Gym. ETSU went 3-0 in the last three games — all against Big South Conference opponents.
  • ETSU has the 18th best scoring defense in the nation with 53.5 points allowed per game. In the nine games after the season opener, ETSU allowed just 46.3 PPG which would rank second in the nation. In yesterday’s game, ETSU allowed just 52 points.
  • In all 11 wins, ETSU has limited the opponent to under 60 points, under 40 percent shooting and less rebounds. ETSU has also led at halftime in every win this season.
  • ETSU is now the top rebounding team in the Southern Conference and ranks 38th nationally with a +9.2 rebound margin. ETSU also ranks 28th nationally in offensive rebounding at 15.4 boards per game.
  • Graduate guard Jiselle Thomas (Norwalk, Ohio) leads the Bucs with 14.0 points per game. She scored her 1,000th career point in the season opener against No. 1 South Carolina and ranks among the top scorers in the SoCon this season.
  • Sophomore guard Nevaeh Brown (Charlotte, N.C.) is averaging an even 11.0 PPG following a 16-point performance in last night’s win over Longwood.
  • ETSU’s two-headed monster on the boards has been true freshman Journee McDaniel (New Bern, N.C.) and graduate Jayla Ruffus-Milner (North Hills, Calif.). Both players finished with 10 rebounds on Wednesday and are the only duo to rank among the top five of the SoCon.
  • Ruffus-Milner scored her 400th career point this past Sunday against Bowling Green and grabbed her 400th career rebound against UNC Asheville.
  • The Blue and Gold are led by first year Coach Brenda Mock Brown, who took over in August. Despite a late arrival to campus, Mock has guided the Bucs to a successful 11-3 record and can double ETSU’s win total of six from last season with a win tomorrow.
  • This season, ETSU will seek its first winning campaign and postseason appearance since 2018, where the team finished 20-13 overall, 11-3 in the SoCon and with an appearance in the Women’s National Invitational Tournament (WNIT). ETSU has made three NCAA tournament appearances all-time (2008, 2009, 2010) and four WNIT appearances (1995, 2006, 2014, 2018).

ABOUT “THE MOUNT”

  • Mount St. Mary’s enters with an even 5-5 record. All five wins have come at home and all five losses have been on the road. Tomorrow will be the first neutral site game of the season.
  • After a 1-4 start against tough competition, the Mount has won four of their last five games.
  • MSM began conference play last week with a 64-46 loss to Manhattan, but won the second Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game last time out against Siena, 65-59, at home in Emmitsburg, Md. this past Sunday. This marked the first win for the Mount as a MAAC member over a conference foe.
  • The Mount are coming off a 16-13 season in 2021-22 where, despite an 11-7 conference record, the team won the Northeast Conference tournament as the No. 3 seed. Mount Saint Mary’s advanced to the NCAA Tournament’s inaugural women’s basketball First Four and were defeated by Longwood — ETSU’s opponent from yesterday.
  • Michaela Harrison registered a game-high 19 points last Monday, putting the graduate student 23 points behind Becky Lovett (1977-82) for fifth on the Mount St. Mary’s all-time scoring list.
  • Natalie Villaflor also averages double figures, tied with Jessica Tomasetti at 11.7 per game. Tomasetti had her first career double-double in the conference win over Siena.
  • Isabella Hunt continues to lead the team in rebounding, assists and steals.
  • The Mount are led by head coach Antoine White, who is in his second season at the helm and his sixth on the staff. White led the Mount to their second straight NCAA Tournament last season and owns a 21-18 overall record with the school.

SERIES HISTORY

  • Tomorrow will be the first all-time meeting between the teams.

The Orioles today announced that they have acquired catcher JAMES McCANN and cash considerations from the New York Mets in exchange for a player to be named later.

McCann, 32, slashed .195/.257/.282 (34-for-174) with six doubles, three homers, 19 runs scored, 18 RBI, and three stolen bases in 61 games with the Mets last season but was limited in action due to nine weeks spent on the Injured List with a left hamate fracture (May 11 to June 24) and a left oblique strain (July 10 to August 4). He appeared in one postseason game in the Wild Card Series against the San Diego Padres, entering as a defensive replacement in the eighth inning of game three. McCann is a veteran of 783 MLB games between the Detroit Tigers, Chicago White Sox, and Mets, and caught Lucas Giolito’s no-hitter with the White Sox on August 25, 2020 vs. Pittsburgh. The 2019 American League All-Star was originally selected by Detroit in the second round of the 2011 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Arkansas.

He was named the Mets’ 2022 nominee for the prestigious Roberto Clemente Award, which recognizes a player from each club who best represents the game of baseball through extraordinary character, sportsmanship, community involvement, philanthropy, and positive contributions, both on and off the field.

Additionally, infielder TYLER NEVIN has been designated for assignment. The Orioles’ 40-man roster currently has 40 players.
