MLS Preview: Los Angeles Galaxy (0-1-0) at Sporting Kansas City (0-1-1)

Although the most recent match between Sporting Kansas City and the Los Angeles Galaxy ended in a 2-2 draw in Carson in September, Sporting Kansas City is unbeaten in its last four encounters (W3 D1). Since October 2015, Sporting Kansas City has only lost two of its last 14 matches against the Galaxy (W7 D5).

The longest home winning streak for Sporting Kansas City since a six-game stretch from March to June 2017 was Sporting Kansas City’s final six matches in 2022. In March-May 2000 and May-August 1998, Sporting won seven consecutive home games, a club record. One of those victories came in a breakaway shootout.

On Saturday, the Los Angeles Galaxy lost 3-1 to FC Dallas to kick off their 2023 campaign. Los Angeles has opened the season with back-to-ack overcomes only multiple times in the club’s set of experiences, doing as such in 2017, 2001 and losing three directly to begin 1997, however the first of those was a breakaway shootout rout.

Sporting Kansas City played the Colorado Rapids to a scoreless draw on Saturday, earning its first point of the season. However, despite having 11 shots on goal, Sporting Kansas City is still looking for its first goal since 2023. This year, Sporting Kansas City has the second-most on-target shots behind Seattle, which has scored on six of its 17 attempts.

Dejan Jovelijic scored the only goal for the Los Angeles Galaxy on Saturday, making it his third consecutive goal on the road since the playoffs of last season. Only three individuals in Los Angeles Galaxy history have scored in four consecutive MLS games played on the road: Robbie Keane in 2012-13, Zlatan Ibrahimovic in 2018-19, and Landon Donovan in 2009.
