MLS Preview: Colorado Rapids (0-1-1) at San Jose Earthquakes (1-1-0)

The San Jose Earthquakes have won just once and compiled just five points in its last seven matches against Colorado Rapids dating back to August 2019 (D2 L4). In only one seven-game span in matchup history have the San Jose Earthquakes collected fewer points, a seven-game set between September 1997 and May 1999 (four points).

The Earthquakes defeated Vancouver, 2-1, on Saturday despite conceding the opening goal of the game. San Jose won just two games all of last season when conceding the first goal of the game despite tying Toronto for the league lead in such games with 22 (D7 L13).

The Colorado Rapids failed to score in their opening two matches of the season (D1 L1), the second time Colorado has failed to score in either of its first two games after 2015, when it played three straight scoreless draws to begin the season, the only streak of three straight regular season 0-0 draws by a team in league history.

Jeremy Ebobisse has contributed to three goals in his first two games this season with two goals and one assist. Only two players in club history have had more goal contributions at this stage of a season: Brad Davis in 2005 (1 goal, 3 assists), and Vako in 2018 (2 goals, 2 assists).

Lalas Abubakar has led his team in successful passes in both of the Colorado Rapids’ games this season, completing 65 in the season opener and 75 last week against Sporting Kansas City. Abubakar’s 140 successful passes lead all of MLS entering matchday three.
