NBA Preview: Washington Wizards (12-20) at Utah Jazz (18-16)

Kyle Kuzma returns to familiar territory when Wizards visit Jazz

On Wednesday night, the University of Utah men’s basketball team took advantage of a Utah Jazz rest day and played No. 20 TCU on the NBA court just down the street from campus.

A couple of players near and dear to the hearts of the Runnin’ Utes program will be in the same arena Thursday night when the Washington Wizards visit the Jazz in Salt Lake City.

Former Utah standout Kyle Kuzma, having arguably his best NBA season yet, continues to lead the Wizards. Kuzma was an instrumental part of Washington’s 121-112 win over the Jazz in D.C. last month, totaling 23 points with eight rebounds and six assists.

In his latest outing Tuesday night, the 2017 All-Pac-12 first-teamer scored 29 points with six rebounds and six assists to lift Washington to a 113-110 win at Phoenix. The win snapped a 10-game losing streak for the Wizards, who were in the midst of winning six of seven games when they faced Utah on Nov. 12.

Kuzma was one of the bright spots during the Wizards’ slump, averaging 23.1 points and 7.0 rebounds.

It’s uncertain whether Kuzma will have former Ute point guard Delon Wright on the court with him Thursday. Unseld told reporters in Phoenix that he was optimistic Wright might play at Utah after missing almost two months with a hamstring injury.

The status of Kristaps Porzingis is also up in the air. Porzingis, who torched Utah for 31 points in Washington last month, didn’t play against the Suns on Tuesday due to a non-COVID illness, leading Unseld to say, “I don’t think it’s anything that’s substantial. Hopefully it’s just 24-, 48-hour variety.”

The Jazz are returning from a 1-2 road trip back East. The swing began with lopsided losses in Milwaukee and Cleveland, where they lost by an average of 24.5 points, before ending on a positive note with a 126-111 win at Detroit.

Lauri Markkanen is coming off of a career-high-tying 38-point showing against the Pistons. He scored 17 versus the Wizards in the previous meeting.

Thursday’s game will be one of just three home contests spanning into the new year for Utah, who play six of the next nine on the road. Washington wraps up its six-game Western swing Friday night in Sacramento. Neither team plays on Christmas Eve nor Christmas Day.

NBA Preview: San Antonio Spurs (10-20) at New Orleans Pelicans (18-12)

Without leading scorers, Pelicans hope to get back on track vs. Spurs

Less than two weeks ago, the New Orleans Pelicans were riding a seven-game winning streak and sitting atop the Western Conference.

Now they’re on a four-game losing streak that has dropped them into third.

The losing streak started with two games against Utah, followed by losses to Phoenix and Milwaukee, all of whom have winning records.

New Orleans will try to get back on track when it plays the visiting San Antonio Spurs, who have the second-worst record in the West, on Thursday night.

The losing streak started with a decisive loss at Utah, but the last three games have been much more competitive. New Orleans lost to the Jazz in overtime in the second game, held a 24-point lead against the Suns before faltering and whittled an 18-point fourth-quarter deficit to three before falling to Milwaukee on Monday.

Green said after practice Wednesday that second-leading scorer Brandon Ingram, who has missed the last 11 games because of a bruised toe, will miss the game against the Spurs and at least one more.

Leading scorer Zion Williamson will also be out after entering health and safety protocol on Wednesday.

The Spurs have won four of their last six games after losing 11 straight. They routed the Rockets 124-105 on Monday night in Houston, despite playing without leading scorer Keldon Johnson, who was sidelined by a bruised back. In his absence, Devin Vassell scored 26 points

San Antonio trailed by two points at halftime, but outscored Houston 32-14 in the third quarter. It then scored the first five points of the fourth quarter to expand the lead to 97-76. The Spurs led 120-94 later in the period.

The Pelicans have defeated the Spurs twice in San Antonio — 129-110 on Nov. 23 and 117-99 on Dec. 2. The final meeting of the season will come March 21 in New Orleans.

* With their fathers in the audience, Connor McDavid extended his point streak to 14 games and Warren Foegele scored the game winner as the Oilers earned a comeback win at American Airlines Center.

Alex Ovechkin continues his pursuit of Gordie Howe for second on the NHL’s all-time goals list Thursday, while David PastrnakKyle Connor and Jonathan Huberdeau each eye their 100th regular-season point of the 2022 calendar year.

PREDATORS, DEVILS, RED WINGS COMPLETE COMEBACKS

The Predators, Devils and Red Wings were three of six teams to earn comeback victories Wednesday night (also COL, EDM & MIN) with Roman JosiJack Hughes and Ville Husso each posting notable performances in the process:

* Josi (1-1—2) scored the game-winning goal in the third period before adding an assist to bring his career numbers to 147-420—567 (791 GP) and surpass David Legwand (210-356—566 in 956 GP) for first place on the Predators’ all-time points list. Josi’s game winner marked the 27th of his career, surpassing Martin Erat for sole possession of third place in franchise history.

Jesper Bratt (2-0—2) scored New Jersey’s first two goals of the game while Jack Hughes (0-1—1) boosted his career totals to 61-85—146 (199 GP) and tied Scott Gomez (36-110—146 in 192 GP) for the fourth-most points in franchise history before age 22. The Devils (22-9-2, 46 points) earned their ninth comeback win of the season, trailing only the Oilers (10) for the most among all clubs.

Ville Husso (46-19-12 in 80 GP)backstopped the Red Wings with 34 saves, while Dylan Larkin (2-1—3) accounted for two of the Red Wings’ seven goals, including the game winner. Detroit scored seven in a game for the second time this season – only the Sabres and Rangers (both w/ 3) have more such outings.

McDAVID, FOEGELE HELP OILERS TO VICTORY WITH DADS IN DALLAS
With their fathers in the audience, Connor McDavid and Warren Foegele each found the back of the net as the Oilers tallied six times and staged a come-from-behind victory at American Airlines Center – Edmonton leads the NHL with 10 comeback wins in 2022-23.

* McDavidextended the longest active point streak in the NHL to 14 games (13-17—30 in 14 GP) and came within one goal of 30 this season (29-36—65 in 34 GP). The Oilers captain can become just the second active player to reach the 30-goal mark in seven consecutive campaigns – he would join Alex Ovechkin (15x: 2006-06 to 2019-20).

* McDavid became the first NHL player with 65-plus points in a season before Christmas since 1995-96, when Penguins teammates Mario Lemieux (29-47—76 in 33 GP) and Jaromir Jagr (29-39—68 in 33 GP) achieved the feat.

DID YOU KNOW?
Foegele and McDavid played minor hockey together for the York-Simcoe Express and were coached by McDavid’s dad, Brian, who was also in the stands Wednesday. Their team went to the finals of the Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament, but eventually went on to lose to the Junior Blues, coached by Al MacInnis.

IS TONIGHT THE NIGHT OVECHKIN SCORES NO. 801?
Alex Ovechkin (800-646—1,446 in 1,308 GP) takes to the ice against the Senators on Thursday with another opportunity to tie Gordie Howe (801-1,049—1850 in 1,767 GP) for second place on the NHL’s all-time goals list.

* Ovechkin, without a goal in each of his past three outings, is no stranger to achieving milestones against the Senators after notching No. 500 against the club Jan. 10, 2016. The Capitals captain has gone scoreless in three consecutive games three times in 2022-23, but co-leads the League in road goals this season and has broken the drought in the subsequent contest twice (2-2—4 on Oct. 17 & 2-0—2 on Dec. 7).

HOT METROPOLITAN DIVISION TEAMS DROP THE PUCK AT PPG PAINTS ARENA
Two of the NHL’s hottest teams meet when the Hurricanes (20-6-6, 46 points) visit the Penguins (19-9-4, 42 points) with the clubs sitting in first and third in the Metropolitan Division, respectively. Each club has collected eight wins since Dec. 1, trailing only Minnesota (9) for the most among all teams through that span.

* Captain Jordan Staal has scored the game-winning goal in each of his past two outings for the Hurricanes, a club that has gone 10-0-2 in their past 12 contests and can match the longest point streak in franchise history (13 GP: 9-0-4 in 2020-21 & 2016-17). Staal, who spent 2006-07 to 2011-12 with the Penguins, can join Sebastian Aho (3 GP from Feb. 26 – March 2, 2019) as the second player in franchise history with three consecutive game winners.

* Fresh off becoming the 10th player in NHL history with at least 500 multi-point games in the regular-season and playoffs combinedSidney Crosby looks to guide the Penguins – who have a 13-2-1 record in their past 16 contests – to their seventh straight home win dating to Dec. 1. Pittsburgh leads all teams in home victories since Crosby entered the League in 2005-06.

TRIO OF STARS EYE THEIR 100TH POINT OF 2022
David Pastrnak (53-46—99 in 77 GP), Kyle Connor (44-55—99 in 81 GP) and Jonathan Huberdeau (24-75—99 in 79 GP) each eye their 100th regular-season point of the 2022 calendar year – with Pastrnak and Connor looking to hit the mark in their head-to-head matchup when the NHL-leading Bruins (25-4-2, 52 points) put their 19-game home point streak on the line against the Jets (21-10-1, 43 points).

* While Connor can join Marian Hossa (46-56—102 in 2006 w/ ATL) as the second player in Jets/Thrashers history to collect 100 regular-season points in a single calendar year, Pastrnak can join Brad Marchand (44-74—118 in 2019) and Adam Oates (36-96—132 in 1993) as just the third Bruins skater in the past 30 years to do so.

The nine-win season is the 15th in program history overall and the seventh under head coach Troy Calhoun. The team extended its season-long winning streak to four games.

• Air Force had won six straight games dating back to last season before falling at Wyoming, which was the third-longest active win streak in the nation.

• Air Force won its fourth straight game vs. a Power 5 team with a 41-10 vs. Colorado in Falcon Stadium. The program improved to 8-12 since 2003 against Power 5 teams. Air Force improved to 6-9 under head coach Troy Calhoun.

• Air Force won consecutive games against Colorado for the first time in series history, beating the Buffs, 41-10, Sept. 10 and 30-23 in overtime in 2019.

All 26 wins have come at home. Air Force Head Coach Troy Calhoun improved to 16-0 alltime vs. FCS teams.

Yankees sign RHP Tommy Kahnle

0

The New York Yankees today announced that they have signed RHP Tommy Kahnle to a two-year Major League contract extending through the 2024 season.

Kahnle, 33, recorded a 2.84 ERA (12.2IP, 5H, 4ER, 3BB, 14K, 2HR) and one save in 13 relief appearances with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2022. In 15 combined rehab appearances (three starts) this past season with Single-A Rancho Cucamonga and Triple-A Oklahoma City, he went 1-0 with a 3.38 ERA (13.1IP, 13H, 5ER, 3BB, 14K, 2HR).

Over parts of eight Major League seasons with the Colorado Rockies (2014-15), Chicago White Sox (2016-17), the Yankees (2017-20) and Los Angeles Dodgers (2022), Kahnle has gone 9-9 with five saves and a 3.78 ERA (290.1IP, 230H, 142R/122ER, 135BB, 358K, 30HR) in 298 career relief appearances. He missed the entire 2021 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery on August 4, 2020. His 12.91 strikeouts-per-9.0-innings is the ninth-highest mark in the Majors among relievers since 2017 (min. 500BF).

In four seasons with the Yankees from 2017-20, the right-handed pitcher went 6-3 with one save and a 4.01 ERA (112.1IP, 94H, 57R/50ER, 46BB, 157K, 13HR) in 129 relief appearances. In 2019, Kahnle went 3-2 with a 3.67 ERA (61.1IP, 45H, 27R/25ER, 20BB, 88K, 9HR) in a career-high 72 relief appearances (tied for sixth in the AL). Of his 72 relief outings, 42 were hitless and scoreless. Kahnle earned his first career monthly honor in July 2019 as he was named the “Reliever of the Month” in the American League after posting a 0.77 ERA (11.2IP, 5H, 1ER, 2BB, 17K) in 12 relief appearances, limiting opponents to .128/.171/.154 during the month.

In 18 career postseason relief appearances (15 appearances with the Yankees, three appearances with the Los Angeles Dodgers), he has gone 1-0 with one save and a 3.38 ERA (21.2IP, 12H, 8ER, 6BB, 22K, 2HR).

The Latham, N.Y., native was originally selected by the Yankees in the fifth round of the 2010 First-Year Player Draft out of Lynn University (Fla.). He was then selected by the Colorado Rockies in the Major League phase of the 2013 Rule 5 Draft. On November 24, 2015, Kahnle was acquired by the Chicago White Sox from Colorado in exchange for RHP Yency Almonte. He was acquired by the Yankees from Chicago-AL on July 18, 2017, alongside INF Todd Frazier and RHP David Robertson in exchange for RHP Tyler Clippard, LHP Ian Clarkin, OF Blake Rutherford and OF Tito Polo. On December 29, 2020, Kahnle signed a two-year contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

To make room on the 40-man roster, the Yankees designated LHP Lucas Luetge for assignment.

Rosters Announced For 2023 Pro Bowl Games Presented By Verizon

0

PRO BOWL GAMES WEEK CULMINATES WITH FIRST-EVER AFC-NFC FLAG GAMES

AT ALLEGIANT STADIUM IN LAS VEGAS ON SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 5

The NFL today announced the AFC and NFC rosters for the 2023 Pro Bowl Games presented by Verizon. The players from each conference will compete in a series of exciting Pro Bowl Skills competitions throughout the week and the first-ever AFC vs. NFC Flag football games on Sunday, February 5, at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.

The 2023 Pro Bowl Games will begin with both new and fan-favorite Skills live on ESPN from 7:00-8:30 PM ET on Thursday, February 2, and continue on Sunday with Skills and Flag games from 3:00-6:00 PM ET on ESPN and ABC. Visit probowl.com/tickets to buy tickets and watch the NFL’s best players in person.

Roster selections are determined by the consensus votes of fans, players and coaches. Each group’s vote counts one-third toward determining the 88 All-Star players. The NFL is the only sports league that combines voting by fans, coaches and players to determine its All-Stars. It was also the first professional sports league to offer online All-Star voting in 1995.

Thirty teams had at least one player selected to the 2023 Pro Bowl Games roster and 18 clubs had multiple players chosen as All-Stars. The PHILADELPHIA EAGLES led all teams with eight Pro Bowl selections while the DALLAS COWBOYS and KANSAS CITY CHIEFS each had seven players chosen. Three additional teams – the BALTIMORE RAVENS (six), MINNESOTA VIKINGS (five) and SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS (six) – each placed at least five players on the Pro Bowl roster.

Four of the six quarterbacks selected to the initial roster – Buffalo’s JOSH ALLEN, Cincinnati’s JOE BURROW, Philadelphia’s JALEN HURTS and Kansas City’s PATRICK MAHOMES – are age 27 or younger. Mahomes earned his fifth-consecutive Pro Bowl selection while Minnesota’s KIRK COUSINS was selected to his fourth Pro Bowl. Seattle quarterback GENO SMITH was chosen for his first Pro Bowl in his 10th career season and became the first quarterback since Rich Gannon (1999) to earn his first Pro Bowl selection in Year 10 or later of his career.

San Francisco’s TRENT WILLIAMS was selected to his 10th Pro Bowl, the most among players chosen for the initial roster, becoming the ninth offensive lineman ever with at least 10 career Pro Bowl selections.

Los Angeles Rams defensive lineman AARON DONALD was selected to his ninth career Pro Bowl and is the only defensive lineman ever to make the Pro Bowl in each of his first nine seasons. Only Pro Football Hall of Famers Reggie White (13) and Bruce Smith (11) have more Pro Bowl selections among defensive linemen all-time. Miami wide receiver TYREEK HILL was selected to his seventh consecutive Pro Bowl and he joins A.J. Green as the only wide receivers to earn Pro Bowl honors in each of their first seven career seasons.

Cincinnati’s JA’MARR CHASE and Dallas’ MICAH PARSONS were named to their second-consecutive Pro Bowl since entering the NFL in 2021 while four other second-year players – Philadelphia’s LANDON DICKERSON, San Francisco’s TALANOA HUFANGA, Kansas City’s CREED HUMPHREY and Denver’s PAT SURTAIN II – each earned their first Pro Bowl selections.

Twenty-five of the players selected to the Pro Bowl today are first-time All-Stars, including rookie cornerbacks SAUCE GARDNER of the New York Jets and TARIQ WOOLEN of the Seattle Seahawks. It marks the second time ever that two rookie cornerbacks made the initial Pro Bowl roster (1982 Pro Bowl – Pro Football Hall of Famer Ronnie Lott and Everson Walls).

NFL: What To Look For – Week 16

0

CONFERENCE PASSING LEADERS MEET: Last week, the KANSAS CITY CHIEFS (11-3) clinched their seventh consecutive AFC West division title, tied for the second-longest streak of division titles in NFL history.

With a win against Seattle on Saturday (1:00 PM ET, FOX), Kansas City would become the third team ever to record at least 12 regular-season wins in five consecutive seasons, joining the 2010-17 NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS (eight consecutive seasons) and 2003-09 INDIANAPOLIS COLTS (seven consecutive seasons).

Quarterback PATRICK MAHOMES enters Week 16 leading the league with 35 touchdown passes, while Seattle quarterback GENO SMITH leads the NFC with 26 touchdown passes this season. Saturday’s game in Kansas City will mark the fourth meeting ever in Week 15 or later between the passing touchdown leaders in each conference.

Mahomes also leads the league with 4,496 passing yards in 2022 and can reach 4,500 passing yards for the third consecutive season and fourth time in his career. He would become the fourth quarterback all-time with four career seasons of 4,500 passing yards and 35 touchdown passes, joining TOM BRADY (five seasons), DREW BREES (four) and Pro Football Hall of Famer PEYTON MANNING (four).

He would become the fifth player in league history to record at least 4,500 passing yards in three consecutive seasons.

RUSHING TO THE FINISH LINE: Chicago’s JUSTIN FIELDS leads all quarterbacks this season with 1,000 rushing yards, while Buffalo’s JOSH ALLEN ranks fourth with 705.

When the Bears host the Bills on Saturday (1:00 PM ET, CBS), it will mark the first matchup in NFL history in which both starting quarterbacks enter the game with at least 700 rushing yards on the season.

Fields is the third quarterback ever with at least 1,000 rushing yards in a season and can surpass MICHAEL VICK (1,039 rushing yards in 2006) for the second-most rushing yards by a quarterback in a single season in NFL history. Only LAMAR JACKSON (1,206 in 2019) has more.

Allen’s top target this season has been wide receiver STEFON DIGGS, who ranks third in the league with 99 receptions and can reach the 100-catch mark for the third-consecutive year. Since entering the NFL in 2015, he has totaled 694 receptions.

With six catches on Saturday, Diggs will become the sixth player ever with 700 receptions in his first eight career seasons, joining Pro Football Hall of Famer MARVIN HARRISON (759 receptions), DEANDRE HOPKINS (747), ANTONIO BROWN (733), TORRY HOLT (712) and BRANDON MARSHALL (712).

PURPLE REIGN: Last week, Minnesota defeated Indianapolis, 39-36 in overtime, and overcame a 33-point deficit to mark the largest comeback in NFL history. With the win, the Vikings clinched the NFC North division title for the first time since 2017.

The victory marked their 10th win of the season decided by one score (eight points or fewer), as Minnesota became the third team ever to win 10 games within a single season by eight points or fewer, joining the 2019 SEATTLE SEAHAWKS and 1978 HOUSTON OILERS. Minnesota can become the first team ever with 11 one-score victories within a single season.

Quarterback KIRK COUSINS earned NFC Offensive Player of the Week honors last week, recording 460 passing yards and four touchdown passes in the comeback victory. He now has 24 touchdown passes on the season.

With a touchdown pass against the New York Giants on Saturday (1:00 PM ET, FOX), Cousins will become the fifth player ever to record at least 25 touchdown passes in at least eight consecutive seasons, joining Pro Football Hall of Famer PEYTON MANNING (13 seasons), DREW BREES (11), PHILIP RIVERS (11) and TOM BRADY (10).

* The Flames scored a season-high seven goals, including two in the opening 30 seconds. Only four teams in NHL history have scored two faster goals to begin a game than Calgary did Wednesday.

* Streaking players continued their strings of success as Pyotr KochetkovKyle Connor and Josh Morrissey led their teams to victory, which also included the Hurricanes ousting the Devils in a clash with their Metropolitan Division rival.

Sidney Crosby posted a multi-point game and became the only active player with 100 or more points against three franchises as the Penguins defeated the Rangers.

* New Jersey is back in action on a seven-game Wednesday, with Jack Hughes looking to become the fourth Devils player since 2000 to post 80-plus points in a calendar year.

HOT START IGNITES FLAMES OFFENSE IN SEVEN-GOAL VICTORY
After a pair of goals in a span of 19 seconds helped the Flames down the Sharks on Dec. 18, Tyler Toffoli (0:15) and Dillon Dube (0:30) each scored within the opening 30 seconds Tuesday as Calgary’s seven goals propelled the club to its second victory at SAP Center in as many contests. Only four teams in NHL history have scored two faster goals to begin a game.

* The Flames were one of three teams to score in the first 25 seconds of a game Tuesday (also NYR: 0:22 & CAR: 0:20), marking just the second day in NHL history to feature three teams accomplish the feat (also WSH: 0:25, NYI: 0:19 & CBJ: 0:14 on Nov. 7, 2019).

* Jonathan Huberdeau (0-3—3) factored on three of his team’s four goals in the final frame – his most points in a game since he joined the Flames – and fell one shy of the franchise record for most assists in any period (Gary Suter: 0-4—4 in P2, April 4, 1986). It also marked Huberdeau’s ninth outing with at least three assists dating to 2021-22, tied with Nikita Kucherov and Roman Josi for the most among all players through that span.

HURRICANES, KOCHETKOV JUST KEEP ON STREAKING ON. . .

Pyotr Kochetkov saved 37 of 38 shots he faced to extend his point streak to 10 games (8-0-2), backstopping the Hurricanes to their sixth straight win and helping them stretch their point streak to 12 contests (10-0-2). Carolina (20-6-6, 46 points) earned a pivotal regulation win against New Jersey (21-9-2, 44 points) to maintain first place in the Metropolitan Division.

* The Hurricanes extended their winning streak to six games – the longest active run in the NHL – and have posted a longer run just seven times. Their 12-game point streak is now tied for the second longest in franchise history (also 12 GP in 2005-06), one shy of the most (13 GP in 2020-21 & 2016-17).

* Kochetkov, who already holds the franchise record for longest point streak by a rookie goaltender, tied Cam Ward (10 GP, 3x; last: 8-0-2 in 2017-18) for the longest run by a Hurricanes/Whalers netminder. Kochetkov (10-1-4) sits second in wins among rookie goaltenders this season, behind only Logan Thompson (14-8-0).

Kyle Connor (2-1—3) and Josh Morrissey (1-1—2) scored three of five Jets goals to each extend their point streaks to 10 games and guide Winnipeg (21-10-1, 43 points) to its 12th home win of 2022-23 – only NHL-leading Boston (17-0-2) has more.

* Connor, who netted his 30th career multi-goal game and second this month (2-1—3 on Dec. 6), has found the back of the net seven times since Dec. 1 (7-10—17 in 11 GP). Tage Thompson (12 in 9 GP), Connor McDavid (10 in 10 GP) and Mikko Rantanen (8 in 10 GP) are the only skaters with more through that span.

* Morrissey (6-32—38 in 32 GP), with four game-winning goals, has found the score sheet in all but five contests this season with the Jets and has collected at least one assist in all but seven. While three defensemen posted a 10-game point streak in 2021-22, Morrissey is one of only nine different blueliners since 1986-87 to post a double-digit assist streak.

CROSBY PROPELS PENGUINS PAST RANGERS WITH MULTI-POINT PERFORMANCE
In their first meeting since the 2022 First Round, the Rangers took an early lead with a goal 22 seconds into regulation, but the Penguins rallied courtesy of captain Sidney Crosby (1-1—2) scoring the game winner and Tristan Jarry stopping 26 shots to lift Pittsburgh (19-9-4, 42 points) past New York (18-11-5, 41 points) in the Metropolitan Division standings.

* Crosby boosted his career regular-season totals versus the Rangers to 38-62—100 (79 GP) and became the second player in Penguins history with 100 points against the franchise, joining Mario Lemieux (61-71—132 in 70 GP). New York is the third franchise that Crosby has a triple-digit point total against, following the Islanders (40-88—128 in 78 GP) and Flyers (52-69—121 in 81 GP).

Jarry extended his point streak to 13 games dating to Nov. 12 (11-0-2), tied with Ken Wregget (13 GP from Jan. 20 – Feb. 16, 1995) for the third longest in Penguins history behind Tom Barrasso (15 GP from March 9 – April 14, 1993) and Marc-Andre Fleury (14 GP from Nov. 12 – Dec. 11, 2010 & 14 GP from Jan. 13 – Feb. 16, 2007).

MARNER AND MATTHEWS HELP MAPLE LEAFS MARCH TO VICTORY IN LIVE UPDATES
The Tuesday edition of #NHLStats: Live Updates featured Mitchell Marner extending his home point streak to 13 games – the longest such run by a Maple Leafs skater since Mats Sundin (16 GP) in 2007-08 – and Auston Matthews scoring his League-leading 57th goal of the 2022 calendar year.

ICYMI: Matthews arrived at Scotiabank Arena sporting his ugly/not ugly Ryan Reynolds holiday sweater and wore matching skates during the game in support of SickKids Foundation. The contest concluded with the jumbotron showcasing all the kids in the stands who also wore the matching sweater Tuesday. Read more about the initiative here.

NOT ONE PATH: RADEK FAKSA
Radek Faksa is the most recent player to be featured in the Not One Path series, highlighting various unconventional paths to the NHL. For Faksa, that meant living in a hotel by himself for six years starting at just 11 years of age, paid for by HC Ocelari Trinec to lessen the financial burden for his single mother. Faksa said the experience was a positive one for his future as it helped him become independent.

WEDNESDAY’S TNT DOUBLEHEADER LOADED WITH STAR POWER
A seven-game slate on Wednesday will feature a pair of games on TNT packed with stars and top scorers including Jack Hughes and the Devils visiting Matthew Tkachuk and the Panthers followed by Jason Robertson and the Stars hosting the League’s top-two points leaders in Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. The Dallas-Edmonton game will also be seen nationally in Canada (SN1 & TVA Sports).

* Hughes (17-20—37 in 32 GP) leads all Devils skaters in goals and points in 2022-23 and has recorded 35-44—79 in 66 GP during the 2022 calendar year (1.20 P/GP). With one more point, he can become the fourth different Devils player since 2000 to post 80+ regular-season points in a calendar year. He would join Taylor Hall (94 in 2018), Zach Parise (92 in 2009) and Patrik Elias (3x; most recently 82 in 2006).

* In his first season with Florida, Tkachuk (14-25—39 in 30 GP) leads all Panthers skaters in assists and points. With a point in tonight’s contest, he would become the second fastest to 40 points in a season in franchise history, behind only Pavel Bure (29 GP in 1999-00). Tkachuk (1.30 P/GP) is on pace to post his second consecutive 100-point season and the second ever by a Panthers player – Jonathan Huberdeau, the player he was traded for this past offseason, did so in 2021-22

* Robertson (24-23—47 in 33 GP), who has been held off the score sheet just seven times in 33 appearances this season, ranks third in the League in goals and fourth (tied) in points. Robertson has recorded 15 multi-point games in 2022-23, tied with Draisaitl (15) for the second most in the NHL this season behind McDavid (19). One of those multi-goal performances included 1-2—3 in a 6-2 W at EDM on Nov. 5.

* McDavid (28-36—64 in 33 GP) and Draisaitl (21-33—54 in 33 GP), who have combined to win the Art Ross Trophy in five of the last six seasons, find themselves in familiar territory holding down the top two positions in the NHL scoring race. McDavid, who enters with the NHL’s longest active point streak (12-17—29 in 13 GP), and Draisaitl have ranked Nos. 1-2 in the scoring race for 63% of the season to date (47 of 75 days) including 18 straight days dating to Dec. 3.
