0

* The Bruins became the first team to clinch a berth in the 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs and the fastest club in NHL history to reach the 50-win mark in a season.

Auston Matthews scored his 30th goal of the season and Mitchell Marner tallied a four-point outing as the Maple Leafs outdueled the Oilers and the NHL’s top two scorers: Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl.

Dawson Mercer stretched his point streak to a dozen games to help the Devils move within two points of the top-seeded Hurricanes and set up a must-watch game Sunday between the two clubs.

* Sunday’s eight-game slate opens with an NHL on TNT doubleheader and features several teams looking to “Spring Forward” in the League standings.

BRUINS HISTORIC SEASON CONTINUES WITH PLAYOFF CLINCH IN 64TH GAME
Hampus Lindholm and Patrice Bergeron scored second-period goals 1:28 apart and Garnet Hathaway had the go-ahead marker with 6:06 remaining in regulation as Boston (50-9-5, 105 points) became the first team to clinch a berth in the 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs as well as the fastest club in NHL history to reach the 50-win mark in a season.

* The Bruins, who clinched a postseason berth by virtue of their victory and the Capitals defeating the Islanders on Saturday, became the third team to do so in 64 games or fewer during an 82-game season. They joined the 1995-96 Red Wings (59 GP) and 1998-99 Stars (63 GP).

MATTHEWS, MARNER AND MAPLE LEAFS OUTDUEL McDAVID, DRAISAITL
Auston Matthews (1-1—2) reached the 30-goal mark for the seventh consecutive season to begin his career and Mitchell Marner (1-3—4) notched his 13th career four-point game as the Maple Leafs (40-17-8, 88 points) defeated Connor McDavid (1-2—3) and Leon Draisaitl (1-0—1) for their 40th win of 2022-23.

* Matthews, who became just the third player in Maple Leafs history with at least seven consecutive 30-goal seasons, also joined elite company among U.S.-born players in NHL history to register a stretch of at least that length (Pat LaFontaine: 8 from 1985-86 – 1992-93 & Joe Mullen: 7 from 1983-84 – 1989-90).

* Marner (24-59—83 in 65 GP), who initiated Toronto’s multi-goal comeback with a highlight-reel individual effort, potted his 13th career four-point game – tied with Borje Salming and Lanny McDonald for the third most in Maple Leafs history. Darryl Sittler (26 GP) and Frank Mahovlich (15 GP) rank first and second, respectively.

CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN: MERCER EXTENDS POINT STREAK TO 12 CONTESTS

Dawson Mercer and Dougie Hamilton each collected assists to help the Devils (43-16-6, 92 points) earn their 25th road win of the season – the second most in a campaign behind only 1998-99 (28). New Jersey moved within two points of Carolina (43-13-8, 94 points) for top spot in the Metropolitan Division to set up a must-watch game for Sunday when the two teams face off.

* Mercer (21 years, 135 days) extended his point streak to 12 games (11-9—20) and surpassed Brendan Shanahan (11 GP from March 8-29, 1990) for the longest run by a player at age 21 or younger in Devils/Rockies/Scouts history.

* Hamilton improved his season totals to 18-44—62 (65 GP) and tied Rob Ramage (20-42—62 in 79 GP) for the third-most points by a defenseman in a season in Devils/Rockies/Scouts history. He trails Scott Stevens (18-60—78 in 83 GP; 1993-94) and Tom Kurvers (16-50—66 in 74 GP; 1988-89).

SCHEIFELE NETS OVERTIME WINNER AS JETS HOLD OFF PANTHERS
The Jets built a 4-2 lead through 40 minutes and the Panthers rallied back to force overtime in search of their second multi-goal, third-period comeback win in as many days, but Mark Scheifele (2-0—2) scored with 29 seconds remaining in the extra frame to help Winnipeg (37-26-3, 77 points) stay within a point of Colorado (36-22-6, 78 points) in their race for third place in the Central Division.

* Scheifele’s overtime winner was the 13th of his career – the most in Jets/Thrashers history and four more than Ilya Kovalchuk (9) who sits second.

* At the other end of the rink, Matthew Tkachuk (2-1—3) recorded his 10th three-point outing of 2022-23 and tied Pavel Bure (10 GP in 1999-00) for the second most by a Panthers skater in a single season behind Jonathan Huberdeau (13 GP in 2021-22). Tkachuk’s 29 multi-point games this season trail only Connor McDavid (37 GP) for the most among all players.

Sunday’s eight-game slate is highlighted by an NHL on TNT doubleheader and the top two teams in the Metropolitan Division squaring off at Prudential Center.

MLS Preview: Colorado Rapids (0-1-1) at San Jose Earthquakes (1-1-0)

0

The San Jose Earthquakes have won just once and compiled just five points in its last seven matches against Colorado Rapids dating back to August 2019 (D2 L4). In only one seven-game span in matchup history have the San Jose Earthquakes collected fewer points, a seven-game set between September 1997 and May 1999 (four points).

The Earthquakes defeated Vancouver, 2-1, on Saturday despite conceding the opening goal of the game. San Jose won just two games all of last season when conceding the first goal of the game despite tying Toronto for the league lead in such games with 22 (D7 L13).

The Colorado Rapids failed to score in their opening two matches of the season (D1 L1), the second time Colorado has failed to score in either of its first two games after 2015, when it played three straight scoreless draws to begin the season, the only streak of three straight regular season 0-0 draws by a team in league history.

Jeremy Ebobisse has contributed to three goals in his first two games this season with two goals and one assist. Only two players in club history have had more goal contributions at this stage of a season: Brad Davis in 2005 (1 goal, 3 assists), and Vako in 2018 (2 goals, 2 assists).

Lalas Abubakar has led his team in successful passes in both of the Colorado Rapids’ games this season, completing 65 in the season opener and 75 last week against Sporting Kansas City. Abubakar’s 140 successful passes lead all of MLS entering matchday three.

MLS Preview: St. Louis City SC (2-0-0) at Portland Timbers (1-1-0)

0

In their seven home games against expansion teams, the Portland Timbers have only lost once, to Orlando City SC in April 2015, 2-0 (W5 D1). Since (W4 D1), Portland has won all five of its home matches against MLS newcomers, including the last three.

After falling behind 3-0 in the first 52 minutes of Saturday’s match at Los Angeles Football Club, Portland was defeated 3-2. The two late goals made it 22 regular season games with goals for the Timbers, the longest streak in MLS and the longest streak in club history, which lasted from June 2017 to March 2018.

St. Louis City SC is the fourth expansion team in MLS history to win its first two games. The others are the Chicago Fire (19989), Seattle Sounders (2009), and Los Angeles Football Club (2018). Only the Seattle Sounders were successful in winning their first three MLS matches in 2009.

Evander, a newcomer to Portland Timbers, has shown assertiveness in his first two MLS games, including Saturday’s goal and four shots against Los Angeles Football Club. This season, Evander has attempted to confront a defender 14 times and has succeeded in nine of those attempts—tied with Atlanta’s T. Almada and L. Araujo for the highest total in MLS).

Joao Klauss is the third player after Diego Rossi (Los Angeles Football Club, 2018) and Fredy Montero (Seattle Sounders, 2009) to score in an expansion team’s first two MLS games. He has done so in each of St. Louis City SC’s first two games. No expansion or other team has ever scored in all three of its first three MLS games.

MLS Preview: Austin FC (1-1-0) at Real Salt Lake (1-1-0)

0

In the playoff first round of last season, Austin FC defeated Real Salt Lake on penalties after coming back from a 2-0 deficit. Each of the four regular-season meetings between the teams has been won by the home team, with Real Salt Lake winning 1-0 at home in 2021 and 2-1 in Sandy in 2022.

Last season, Real Salt Lake had trouble at home, losing three of its final seven games (D2 W2) at America First Field. Since May 2021 (W15 D7), Real Salt Lake had only lost three of its previous 25 home MLS matches.

Austin FC has lost five consecutive MLS road games, including the playoff defeat at Los Angeles Football Club last year, failing to score in each of the last four. Austin FC had only lost two of its previous 12 MLS road games since April (W8 D2) before this run.

After two matches, Real Salt Lake has taken an MLS-high 37 shots, including 19 against Seattle. Vancouver only took 18 or more shots four times during the regular season, while Austin FC took an MLS playoff record 38 shots, including extra time, in the first round of last year’s playoffs.

In Austin’s 1-0 victory over Montreal on Saturday, Maxi Urruti scored one goal off the bench., his first goal since April 2018 as a substitute. After scoring 13 goals from substitutes during the regular season, only Los Angeles Football Club scored more than Austin, with J. Gallagher scoring in MD1.

MLS Preview: CF Montreal Impact (0-2-0) at Nashville SC (1-0-1)

0

The only time Nashville SC and CF Montreal Impact have met, Nashville SC won 2-1 at home in the season-opening encounter. Nashville SC is unbeaten in five of those matches (W3 D2). Montreal is the only team Nashville hasn’t beaten at least once against out of the seven MLS teams Nashville has played at least five times (including playoffs).

The second-longest shutout streak in Nashville SC’s history (four consecutive in May 2021) dates back to the previous season. Since August 21, 2022, Nashville SC has kept six clean sheets in its last ten regular season games, the most in MLS.

The only MLS team with no goals and no points this season is CF Montreal Impact, who lost to Austin FC 1-0. In the history of the MLS, only four teams have started a season with three consecutive shutout losses; 2020 for New York City FC, 2018 for Seattle FC, 2007 for Toronto FC, and 1999 for the Kansas City Wizards

Nashville SC had just five shots in its 0-0 draw with the New York Red Bulls, and no player attempted more than one. Before Saturday, Nashville had had at least two players attempt multiple shots in 19 consecutive MLS games, including playoffs.

Romell Quioto led CF Montreal on Saturday with three chances, attempted two shots, and perfect passing accuracy (13/13). The main other Montreal player to at any point achieve that statline in a MLS game was Dominic Oduro against Wearing Kansas City in 2017.

MLS Preview: New York Red Bulls (0-1-1) at Minnesota United FC (1-0-0)

0

After New York won the first two games, a pair of 3-0 victories in 2017 and 2018, Minnesota United has won its last two matches against the New York Red Bulls, winning on the road in 2019 and 2022. The Red Bulls prevailed 3-0 in their first Minnesota encounter in July 2017, their only previous encounter.

On February 25, Minnesota United defeated Dallas 1-0 to record its third opening-game victory in club history. The Loons had won their season opener twice before, and each time they won their next match, winning two straight to start 2019 and three straight to start 2020.

The New York Red Bulls procured their primary place of 2023 with a scoreless draw against Nashville on Saturday. After failing to score in its first two games in 2016, New York has done so just twice this season. In New York’s third game of the year, Sacha Kljestan scored the opening goal in the 22nd minute.

Minnesota Joined surrendered ownership in it season opening win at Dallas, holding simply 37.6 percent of the ball. Since mid-September 2021, when they had less than 40% possession, the Loons have won seven of the last eight games.

This season, the New York Red Bulls have only taken 11 shots, the fewest of any team that will play in two MLS games in 2023. On matchday one, New York was awarded a penalty kick by Facundo Torres; the Red Bulls have not conceded a goal from open play since 2023.

MLS Preview: Los Angeles Galaxy (0-1-0) at Sporting Kansas City (0-1-1)

0

Although the most recent match between Sporting Kansas City and the Los Angeles Galaxy ended in a 2-2 draw in Carson in September, Sporting Kansas City is unbeaten in its last four encounters (W3 D1). Since October 2015, Sporting Kansas City has only lost two of its last 14 matches against the Galaxy (W7 D5).

The longest home winning streak for Sporting Kansas City since a six-game stretch from March to June 2017 was Sporting Kansas City’s final six matches in 2022. In March-May 2000 and May-August 1998, Sporting won seven consecutive home games, a club record. One of those victories came in a breakaway shootout.

On Saturday, the Los Angeles Galaxy lost 3-1 to FC Dallas to kick off their 2023 campaign. Los Angeles has opened the season with back-to-ack overcomes only multiple times in the club’s set of experiences, doing as such in 2017, 2001 and losing three directly to begin 1997, however the first of those was a breakaway shootout rout.

Sporting Kansas City played the Colorado Rapids to a scoreless draw on Saturday, earning its first point of the season. However, despite having 11 shots on goal, Sporting Kansas City is still looking for its first goal since 2023. This year, Sporting Kansas City has the second-most on-target shots behind Seattle, which has scored on six of its 17 attempts.

Dejan Jovelijic scored the only goal for the Los Angeles Galaxy on Saturday, making it his third consecutive goal on the road since the playoffs of last season. Only three individuals in Los Angeles Galaxy history have scored in four consecutive MLS games played on the road: Robbie Keane in 2012-13, Zlatan Ibrahimovic in 2018-19, and Landon Donovan in 2009.

LA KINGS TEAM NOTES:
HOME SWEET HOME
The Kings enter tonight riding a six-game home winning streak, dating back to Feb. 11 (6-0 W vs. PIT). Over those six games, the Kings have outscored their opponents 27-13 and have averaged a goals-for per game of 4.50, the second-highest home average since the resumption of the regular-season following the NHL All-Star Break on Feb. 6. With a win tonight, the Kings would extend their home winning streak to a season-long seven games. The last time the Kings had a seven-game home winning streak was from April 4 to April 27, 2013. There have been only nine different instances in franchise history that the team has had a home winning streak of at least seven games. The Kings are 8-2-0 in their last 10 home games. In 31 games at Crypto.com Arena so far this campaign, the team has established a record of 20-9-2 with 42 points and a points percentage of .677%, the fifth-best home points percentage in the league:
Best home points percentage this season
Team GP PTS% (record)
Boston Bruins 32 .859% (26-3-3)
Tampa Bay Lightning 33 .773% (23-5-5)
Toronto Maple Leafs 33 .758% (23-6-4)
Carolina Hurricanes 32 .750% (23-7-2)
LA Kings 31 .677% (20-9-2)

The Kings are also riding a five-game overall winning streak, dating back to Feb. 28 (6-5 SOW at WPG). Not only would a win tonight extend the team’s home winning streak into seventh game, but it would also extend their overall winning streak to six games for the first time since the 2021-22 campaign (Oct. 30 to Nov. 11, 2021). Since Feb. 6, the Kings have accumulated an overall record of 10-2-1 with 21 points and have outscored their opponents 52-36. LA’s .808 points percentage during that time places second in the league:

It’s been more than 14 years since the Stars reached double digits in goals in a game (10-2 W vs. NYR on Feb. 6, 2009) and have only netted more on one other occasion (15-2 W vs. WIN on Nov. 11, 1981).

  • The Stars became the first team to score 10 goals in a game this season and just the fifth different club in the past five seasons to score 10 goals in a game, joining the Canadiens (10 vs. FLA on April 29, 2022 & 10 vs. DET on Dec. 2, 2017), Penguins (11 vs. DET on March 27, 2022), Maple Leas (10 vs. DET on Feb. 26, 2022) and the Blackhawks (10 vs. PIT on Oct. 5, 2017).

TEAM NOTES
TONIGHT’S MATCHUP
Tonight, the New York Islanders host the Washington Capitals in the second of four meetings between the two clubs this season. The last time these teams met was January 16, at UBS Arena, when Sebastian Aho, Hudson Fasching and Matt Martin each found the back of the net to help the Islanders earn a point in an overtime loss. The Islanders have collected points in their last four consecutive meetings with the Capitals (2-0-2), dating back to March 15, 2022. The Islanders improved to 4-0-1 in their last five games on Thursday night, as Hudson Fasching and Anders Lee each scored in the third period to help the Islanders mount a two-goal deficit, and Brock Nelson potted the game-winner in overtime. It was the Islanders’ fourth straight victory against a Metropolitan Division opponent. The Islanders also have a 7-2-1 record in their last ten games. Amongst Metropolitan teams, they are tied New Jersey for second-best record in that span, behind Carolina (8-2-0).

SERIES SWEEP
Thursday’s victory was the Islanders fourth straight against the Pittsburgh Penguins. It is the first time in franchise history that the Islanders have swept a season series against the Penguins, and the first time since 2014-15 that they will finish a regular season with a winning record in PPG Paints Arena.

PENALTY KILL
The Islanders lead the NHL in home-ice penalty kill, with an 87.5% success rate through 34 games this season. This season, they have allowed 11 power play goals in 88 times shorthanded. Since December, they have allowed just six (53 times shorthanded).
