March 14, 2023 – CALGARY FLAMES [3] vs. ARIZONA COYOTES 4
The Calgary Flames began a brief two-game road trip at Mullett Arena on Tuesday night against the Arizona Coyotes. Mikael Backlund would open the scoring for Calgary just before the halfway point of the first frame with his 16th of the year, but Clayton Keller would respond shortly after for Arizona to tie the game through 20. The Coyotes would score just 55 seconds into the second with Matias Maccelli giving Arizona their first lead of the night, before Walker Duehr drew Calgary level 52 seconds later. Keller would score his second of the night in the third just over two minutes in and Arizona would maintain a 3-2 lead until the 14:59 mark when Jonathan Huberdeau made it goals in back-to-back games to tie the contest. The game would require overtime, where Arizona would score 3:10 in and win 4-3.

TONIGHTS STORYLINES & STATS
This is the third of four matchups this season between the Flames and Golden Knights. The teams have split the previous two meeting so far this season. This is a Pacific Division matchup and the Flames have an overall record of 9-4-3 against Pacific Division opponents this season and a record of 18-12-6 against Western Conference opponents.
FLAMES VERSUS GOLDEN KNIGHTS THIS SEASON:
The Flames and Golden Knights get set to face off for the third time this season, with the Flames claiming three of a possible four points thus far. The first meeting between Vegas and Calgary came in October with the Flames erasing an early two-goal deficit to comeback and win 3-2 with goals from Elias Lindholm, Tyler Toffoli, and Blake Coleman. In the rematch 10 games ago, the Flames got goals from Jakob Pelletier, Jonathan Huberdeau and Mikael Backlund. Vegas would be the team to comeback in this game however, as they rallied late with Alex Pietrangelo scoring the overtime winner. Following this contest, these clubs will meet one last time in Calgary on March 23rd.

Jonathan Huberdeau scored in the ladder stages of the final frame, giving him goals in back-to-back games, Troy Stecher picked up an assist on the play for his second point as a Flame. Stecher is now just two points away from 100 in his NHL career. Milan Lucic assisted on Walker Duehr’s goal in Arizona, giving him helpers in back-to-back contests and matching his assist-total from last season (13) in 17 less games. Mikael Backlund has scored in back-to-back games against Vegas and has three points against the Golden Knights this season.

The Calgary Flames AHL affiliate the Calgary Wranglers became the first team in the AHL to clinch a playoff spot on Friday night with a 2-0 win over the Ontario Reign. This marks the second-straight season the franchise has become the first AHL team to secure a playoff spot, as they did in 2021-22 as the Stockton Heat. Calgary currently has an AHL best record of 42-15-3 and have amassed 87 points, four up on the Toronto Marlies for the most in the league. Golden Knights goaltender Logan Thompson and forward Brett Howden are both Calgary, AB natives. Vegas’s other netminder Adin Hill played 19 games for the Calgary Canucks of the AJHL. The Flames have outshot their opponent in 51 of their 68 games this season. With his shorthanded goal on Sunday against Ottawa, Rasmus Andersson helped Calgary win their 15th straight game when he scores a goal, dating back to the 2020-21 season. The goal was also the first short-handed goal of his career, and the eighth by the Flames this season which is tied for the fifth-most in the NHL. The Flames and Golden Knights last meeting was the first time the two-clubs have gone to overtime in their 16-game history.

The Vegas Golden Knights (42-20-6) concluded their five-game road trip with a 5-3 win against the Philadelphia Flyers (24-32-11) on Tuesday night at Wells Fargo Center. Midway through the first period, Pavel Dorofeyev knocked home his second goal of the season to give Vegas a 1-0 lead. Early in the second, Ivan Barbashev deflected a Shea Theodore shot to put the visitors up by a pair. After Travis Sanheim got the Flyers on the board, Teddy Blueger buried a rebound to reestablish the two-goal lead. Jonathan Marchessault made it a 4-1 game, but Philadelphia fought back as Nick Seeler and Morgan Frost each tallied to bring the score to 4-3. Barbashev tucked home an empty-net goal to seal the 5-3 victory for the Golden Knights.

Extra Innings
The Golden Knights accomplished their seventh overtime victory this season against Tampa Bay on Thursday night. Vegas trails only New Jersey (10) and Winnipeg (8) for the most overtime victories this season. Alec Martinez’s goal in extra time was the defenseman’s first overtime winner as a Golden Knight.
Against the Flames
The Golden Knights’ matchup against the Flames on Thursday marks the third of four this season. Vegas owns an all-time record of 11-5-0 against Calgary and have never lost to the club at T-Mobile Arena (8-0-0), outscoring the Flames 34 to 11 in Vegas. The last time the teams met, the Golden Knights came back from a 3-1 deficit to defeat the Flames in overtime. Vegas used goals from Jack Eichel, Zach Whitecloud, and William Carrier to bring the game level at 3-3 and force overtime. 42 seconds into the overtime, Jonathan Marchessault’s shot rang off the crossbar but sat in the crease for Alex Pietrangelo who tapped in the game winner.
