NHL Preview: Anaheim Ducks (17-33-6) at Florida Panthers (28-25-6)

The Ducks completed a two-game homestand with a 6-3 loss to the Los Angeles Kings Friday night at Honda Center. Cam Fowler recorded two assists, his second consecutive multi-point game (2-2=4) and 65th of his career, surpassing Scott Niedermayer (64) for sole possession of the most in franchise history by a defenseman. Kevin Shattenkirk scored his second goal in as many games, netting goals in consecutive games for the first time since Mar. 6-8, 2021 (2-2=4). Mason McTavish scored his 12th goal of the season and his team-leading fifth PPG goal at 2:28 of the third period. Trevor Zegras extended his point streak to four games with an assist on McTavish’s goal (1-3=4). Frank Vatrano scored his eighth goal the past 12 games (8-3=11), marking his 14th goal. He also earned his 14th assist, his third multi-point effort the past nine games. Dmitry Kulikov recorded his second assist in as many games. John Gibson made 35 saves for a league-leading 17th time this season.

ANAHEIM DUCKS NOTES
TODAY’S GAME: The Anaheim Ducks begin a four-game road trip today against the Florida Panthers at FLA Live Arena (10 a.m. PT, TV: Bally Sports SoCal AUDIO: Ducks Stream). Anaheim enters today’s game with points in six of their last nine games (4-4-1) in addition to a 5-5-1 record the last 11 contests. Today marks Anaheim’s ninth of 10 matinee contests in 2022-23 (three home, seven road), where the club is 1-6-1 to date. Anaheim’s final matinee game is scheduled for Apr. 8 @ ARI. The Ducks open their eighth set of back-to-back contests this season, posting a 2-9-3 record overall, earning points in four of the seven first half contests (1-3-3). Anaheim continues its 11-game February schedule today (1-4-1 to date), consisting of four home and seven road contests. All-time, Anaheim is 154-128-35 in the month of February. Since the start of 2012-13, Anaheim is 57-49-13 in the month, earning points in 70 of the 119 contests (.590%). Following today’s game, the Ducks will conclude the back-to-back tomorrow, Tuesday, Feb. 21 at Tampa Bay (4 p.m. PT). DUCKS-PANTHERS: Anaheim and Florida conclude a two-game season series tonight at Honda Center. The Ducks own a 16-18-6 all-time record vs. the Panthers, including a 7-7-5 mark at FLA Live Arena. In the first meeting of 2022-23, Florida earned a 5-3 win at Honda Center despite a 43-save performance from John Gibson. The Panthers return to FLA Live Arena tonight where the Cats will play nine of their next 10 contests. With the only road trip over that span being to Tampa Bay on Feb. 28, the Panthers next 10 games will all take place in the state of Florida. Florida’s 59 games played as of Feb. 19 tied with NYI for the most among NHL teams, while their 26 home games played tied for second fewest. However, the Panthers have scored 101 goals at FLA Live Arena this season (5th-most) for a 3.88 goals for per game average at home that ranks second behind TBL. Matthew Tkachuk leads the Cats with 40 points (14-26-40) over 24 home games in 2022-23; his 1.67 points per game on home ice ranks fourth among League skaters.

CATS AND DUCKS
Florida will face off against Anaheim for the second and final time in 2022-23, with the Cats taking the first matchup Nov. 6 at Honda Center, 5-3, behind two third-period goals from Sam Reinhart and four points (1-3-4) from former Duck Brandon Montour. Frank Vatrano is expected to skate in his first game back at FLA Live Arena tonight; Vatrano appeared in 271 regular season games with Florida, producing 126 points (73-53-126). The Panthers have won each of their past five matchups with the Ducks since Nov. 21, 2019, and the Cats have taken home a victory in four of Anaheim’s prior five visits to FLA Live Arena since Feb. 3, 2017.
