MMA Preview: UFC Fight Night 219 – Josh Parisian (15-5) vs Jamal Pogues (9-3)

0

Five intriguing fights are on the main card of UFC Fight Night 219. The only heavyweight fight on UFC Fight Night 219’s main card is Jamal Pogues vs. Josh Parisian. Both fighters are skilled at knockouts and like to fight early. Because of this, we can only assume that their matchup on Saturday will be entertaining.

Josh Parisian vs Jamal Pogues Odds
Moneyline Odds
Josh Parisian -123
Jamal Pogues +114
*Odds taken from Sports odds Direct on Friday, February 17, 2023.

When, Where, and How to Watch?
Place: UFC Apex in Vegas, Nevada
Date: Saturday, February 18, 2023
Time: ~10:00 PM ET
How to Watch: UFC Fight Pass/ESPN+

Since joining the UFC in 2020, Josh Parisian has a record of 15-5 overall with a 2-2 record. He is the definition of a heavyweight fighter in the dictionary: big, strong, and he can throw very powerful punches.

The guy doesn’t usually hit a lot of big shots (4.97 per minute), but when he does, it almost always ends in a knockout. He has won 11 fights by technical knockout or knockout.

When it comes to defending against strikes, Parisians are not very good. Not very well, he takes in 5.11 significant strikes per minute. However, the heavyweight at 265 pounds rarely succumbs to powerful blows. He has only lost two fights by KO or TKO, which is evidence.

Parisian’s takedown defense, which is only 42%, is another major flaw. In light of the fact that heavyweights rarely have the opportunity to defend against takedowns, that number is actually horrendous. However, he will probably have to do so on Saturday.

Boxing Preview: Luis “Pantera” Nery (33-1-0, 25 KOs) vs Azat “Crazy A” Hovhannisyan (21-3-0, 17 KOs)

0

On Saturday, February 18, two of the most aggressive, forward-pressing super bantamweight boxers will compete in a 12-round WBC Eliminationator.

Azat “Crazy A” Hovhannisyan, of Los Angeles via Yerevan, Armenia, will face former two-division world champion Luis “Pantera” Nery, 33-1, 25 KOs, of Tijuana, Mexico. The winner of this fight will be one step closer to a coveted opportunity to fight for a world championship. The event, which is being held at Fox Theater Pomona in conjunction with Zanfer Boxing, will be broadcast live on DAZN beginning at 5:00 p.m. PST/8:00 p.m. EST.

WHAT TIME IS THE NERY VS. HOVHANNISYAN FIGHT?
Date: Saturday, February 18
Time: 6 p.m. ET / 11 p.m. GMT
Main event ringwalks (approx): 9 p.m. ET / 2 a.m. GMT
The card will stream live on DAZN in over 200 countries across the globe
The fight will take place at the Fox Theater in Pomona, California.
The main card is set to get underway at 6 p.m. ET / 11 p.m. GMT with the main event ringwalks scheduled for 9 p.m. ET / 2 a.m. GMT.

Luis Nery stated, “I am ready for the next challenge and prove once more that I am the best super bantamweight in the world.” Azat Hovhannisyan is a skilled opponent, but I’m ranked number one by the WBC, and if I win this fight, I’ll be ready to fight Stephen Fulton or Murodjon Akhmadaliev so they can’t avoid me anymore. See you on February 18, Luis Nery is committed to staying.

Azat Hovhannisyan stated, “I have a lot of respect for Luis.” He is an extremely talented fighter and a former world champion. I am aware that I will need to do everything in my power to win.

Oscar De La Hoya, Chairman and CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, stated, “On February 18, you will see two hungry fighters who have been waiting for their chance at another opportunity to be at the top of their division.” In this title eliminator, Hovhannisyan will demonstrate that he can live up to his moniker of “Crazy A,” pulling out all the stops to defeat Nery and move one step closer to becoming the world champion.

Fernando Beltran, the chief executive officer of Zanfer Boxing, stated, “We are very excited to have Nery back in the United States this February 18.” Luis faces a formidable obstacle in this fight, but he is at the top of his game and has not slowed down his preparation. Nery will undoubtedly demonstrate that he can defeat anyone and that he is one of the best fighters in his division.

Luis Nery is a representation of the tough fighters who have emerged from Tijuana, Mexico. The 28-year-old is a former two-division world champion with a nearly flawless record. His only defeat came in May 2021 against Brandon Figueroa, when he lost his WBA and WBC World Super Bantamweight titles. He has been on a vengeance since then to get back to the top, winning the WBC Silver and WBO Inter-Continental Super Bantamweight titles against Carlos Castro in February 2022 and knocking out David Carmona in the third round in October 2022, respectively.

Azat Hovhannisyan, an Armenian native from Yerevan, has established himself as a respected member of his division through steady advancement. The impressive and aggressive forward style of the 34-year-old “Crazy A” has earned him the respect of the LA fight scene. Except for a solid unanimous decision victory against Jose Santos Gonzalez in July 2021, all of his fights since his attempt to challenge for the WBC Super Bantamweight Championship title against Rey Vargas ended in defeat. Right now, ranked No. 2 by the WBC; 1 by the WBA; 3 by the WBO; and 4 by the 4 by The Ring, Hovhannisyan stands in front of yet another chance to win the world championship.

Boxing Preview: Leigh Wood (26-2-0, 16 KO’s) vs Mauricio Lara (28-2-1, 18 KO’s)

0

On Saturday, February 18, hometown hero Leigh Wood will fight big-punching Mexican Mauricio Lara, live worldwide on DAZN (excluding Australia and New Zealand), to defend his WBA Featherweight World Title. Matchroom Boxing’s 2023 schedule in the UK is set to get off to a rousing start at the Motorpoint Arena Nottingham. To buy tickets, go to this link!

In the 12th and final round of his epic first defense of the WBA 126lbs title in March 2022, “Leigh-thal” (26-2 KOs) memorably stopped Michael Conlan. He brutally knocked the Irishman out of the ring to end their Fight of the Year stunner.

The Forest-mad Featherweight was heavily dropped in the first round and appeared to be headed for his third professional loss before fighting back brilliantly to earn a brilliant victory that will be talked about for a long time.

When is the wood versus. FIGHT LARA?
Date: Date: Saturday, February 18 Main event ringwalks (approximately): 7 p.m. GMT / 2 p.m. ET The fight will take place at the Motorpoint Arena in Nottingham, England, at 10:49 p.m. GMT/5:49 p.m. ET.
Over 200 nations will be able to watch the card live on DAZN (with the exception of Australia and New Zealand).
The main event ringwalks are scheduled for 10 p.m. GMT/5 p.m. ET, and the event is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. GMT/2 p.m. ET.

After former “Super Champion” Leo Santa Cruz gave up his title on Monday, December 12, Wood is now the only Featherweight Champion in the World Boxing Association. The 34-year-old wants to add more World Titles to his collection immediately in 2023.

After their highly anticipated fight on September 24 was postponed due to Wood’s torn bicep during sparring, “Bronco” (25-2-1, 18 KOs) has been patiently waiting for his chance to fight Wood. However, the Featherweight KO artist will finally get the chance to fight for the World Title next month.

After shocking and brutally finishing Josh Warrington in a sensational upset behind closed doors at The SSE Arena, Wembley in February 2021, Lara is well-known in the UK. He ended the IBF Featherweight World Champion’s streak of victories.

Seven months later, he rematched Warrington in front of a sold-out Headingley Stadium in Leeds, but the Mexican got a nasty cut over the left eye in round two from an accidental headbutt, forcing a technical draw.

On the undercard of Roman Gonzalez vs. Julio Cesar Martinez in March 2022, the power-punching 24-year-old blitzed Emilio Sanchez in three rounds before stopping Jose Sanmartin in three rounds in another destructive brute force display to put the 126 pounds division on notice.

Wood stated, “Mauricio Lara’s disrespect he showed me regarding my injury and my country has made things personal between us.” I’m going to demonstrate to him what I stand for. See you in Nottingham on February 18 – And Still!”

Lara stated, “I am not going to waste this opportunity, which I have been waiting for for two years.” I defeated Warrington in England in February 2021, and in 2023, I will accomplish the same feat against Wood. Mexico will win the WBA 126-pound World Title, which I promised to my daughter, family, team, and entire nation. Leigh Wood, your time has come, and no “injury” can prevent you from this.

Eddie Hearn, chairman of Matchroom Sport, stated, “Quite simply this is a fight that you have to watch through your fingers.” Leigh Wood is about to bring another night of drama to the Motorpoint Arena Nottingham against the brutal, fearless, and much-ignored Mauricio Lara, following the drama of the fight with Conlan in March. In the summer, Leigh will fight at the City Ground, but first, get ready for an epic main event and all-action card as we prepare for another FOTY contender on February 18 in Nottingham.

Joe Markowski, CEO of DAZN North America, stated, “What a fight this is to kick off the Matchroom UK schedule in 2023.” I can’t wait for February 18 because Wood and Lara can’t do anything but engage in brutal, toe-to-toe, edge-of-your-seat battles. DAZN is the only place to watch this barnstormer live.

NHL Morning Skate – Feb. 17, 2023

0

* Twenty-one-year-old Seth Jarvis scored his first career hat trick – the fourth youngest to do so in Hurricanes history – as Carolina secured a win in its final game ahead of the 2023 Navy Federal Credit Union NHL Stadium Series.

* Multiple teams moved up the standings Thursday night, highlighted by the Golden Knights, who took over second overall in the Western Conference, and the Kraken, who jumped up to second place in the Pacific Division.

* Friday’s five-game slate includes League scoring leader Connor McDavid needing one point against the streaking Rangers to reach 100, the Kings and Ducks clashing on ESPN as well as the Senators retiring the No. 25 of a fan favorite and franchise cornerstone.

Click here to read plenty of #NHLStats on McDavid’s pursuit of 100 points this season and 800 in his career(posted before the All-Star break).

JARVIS, RAANTA LEAD HURRICANES TO VICTORY AHEAD OF STADIUM SERIES
Seth Jarvis (3-0—3) netted his first career hat trick and Antti Raanta made 20 saves as the Metropolitan Division-leading Hurricanes (36-10-8, 80 points) captured their ninth consecutive home victory against the Canadiens dating to Nov. 18, 2016 and head into the 2023 Navy Federal Credit Union NHL Stadium Series with nine wins in their past 10 contests.

* The club’s nine consecutive home victories against the Canadiens surpassed an eight-game stretch against the Sabres (Dec. 17, 2016 – Nov. 4, 2022) for their longest active home win streak versus an opponent.

* Jarvis (21 years, 15 days) became the fourth-youngest player in Hurricanes team history to score a hat trick behind Sebastian Aho (19 years, 189 days on Jan. 31, 2017), Elias Lindholm (20 years, 96 days on March 8, 2015) and Eric Staal (20 years, 364 days on Oct. 28, 2005).

* On the night Cam Ward was inducted into the newly-established Hurricanes Hall of Fame, Raanta collected a point in his 13th straight decision (11-0-2) and passed the 2005-06 Conn Smythe Trophy winner for the longest such run in franchise history (Ward: 10-0-2 in 2017-18).

TEAMS CLIMB THE STANDINGS

* The Kraken built a 5-0 lead through two periods and never looked back as they scored six-plus goals for the sixth time this season and boosted their goal total in 2022-23 to 193, the fifth-best mark in the League behind the Oilers (205), Panthers (200), Bruins (199) and Sabres (196). With the win, Seattle (31-18-6, 68 points) moved past idle Los Angeles (30-18-7, 67 points) to take over second place in the Pacific Division.

Dylan Larkin (0-3—3) factored on three of his team’s five goals as the Red Wings (26-20-8, 60 points) bested the Flames and leapfrogged the Sabres (27-22-4, 58 points) to move within two points of the final Wild Card position in the Eastern Conference standings. Larkin extended his multi-point streak to four games (5-5—10) and tied Dominik Kubalik (Oct. 17-25) for the longest by a Red Wings player this season – the last Detroit skater to record a longer such run was Johan Franzen (5 GP from March 15-24, 2009).

Marc Staal scored his first goal as a member of the Panthers to help Florida (28-24-6, 62 points) earn a win at Capital One Arena and move into a tie in terms of standings points with Washington (28-23-6, 62 points), which holds the final Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference by virtue of a game in hand. Staal became the sixth defenseman to score a goal with the Panthers at age 36 or older and the first since Brian Campbell nearly seven years ago (March 3, 2016).

Paul Cotter tied the game 6:22 into the third period and William Carrier scored the game winner with 18 seconds remaining in regulation as the Golden Knights (33-18-4, 70 points) moved past the Jets (34-20-1, 69 points) for second place in the Western Conference standings. Cotter extended his goal streak to three games and established a franchise record for the longest run by a rookie.

SWAYMAN STYMYING SMASHVILLE TO SWEEP SIBLINGS TRIP FEATURED IN LIVE UPDATES
Thursday’s edition of #NHLStats: Live Updates featured more notes from the slate, including Jeremy Swayman (28 saves) blanking the Predators as the League-leading Bruins (41-8-5, 87 points) swept their two-game siblings trip.

FRIDAY FEATURES McDAVID NEEDING ONE POINT VERSUS RANGERS TO REACH 100

Friday’s five-game slate features League scoring leader Connor McDavid (42-57—99 in 55 GP) looking to reach 100 points on the season when the Oilers (30-19-6, 66 points) host the red-hot Rangers (32-14-8, 72 points), who can extend their winning streak to seven contests.

* McDavid can become the seventh player in NHL history to hit 100 points within his first 56 games of a season multiple times (also 53 GP in 2020-21), following Wayne Gretzky (12x), Mario Lemieux (8x), Mike Bossy (3x), Phil Esposito (3x), Jari Kurri (2x) and Guy Lafleur (2x).

* McDavid (281-515—796 in 542 GP) also needs four points to reach 800 in his career. He has recorded a League-leading 30 four-point games since his debut season, including eight in 2022-23.

LOS ANGELES, ANAHEIM SET TO CLASH IN “FREEWAY FACE-OFF” ON ESPN
The Kings (30-18-7, 67 points) visit the Ducks (17-32-6, 40 points) on ESPN in this season’s second edition of the “Freeway Face-Off” rivalry, following a 4-1 win by Los Angeles on Dec. 20, 2022.

Anze Kopitar (28-53—81 in 84 GP) enters Friday with 81 career points against the Ducks, which are two back of matching Mike Modano (28-55—83 in 82 GP) for the most versus the franchise in NHL history. Kopitar’s 28 goals are tied with Modano for the League’s sixth-highest total.

Cam Fowler (age 31) and Kevin Shattenkirk (age 34) account for each of Anaheim’s last three goals. There have only been six instances in NHL history of a team having four consecutive tallies all scored by defensemen age 30 or older (excluding shootout-deciding goals), including one which occurred earlier this season.

SENATORS SET TO RETIRE NEIL’S No. 25 AT CANADIAN TIRE CENTRE
Chris Neil, who spent his entire 15-season career with the Senators, is set to have his No. 25 retired by the club during a pre-game ceremony at Canadian Tire Centre on Friday.

* Neil will become the fourth player to have his number retired by the franchise, following Chris Phillips (No. 4), Frank Finnigan (No. 8) and Daniel Alfredsson (No. 11). Finnigan, who played parts of 10 seasons with the original Senators from 1923-24 to 1933-34 and was instrumental in the NHL’s return to Ottawa, received the honor posthumously during the first game in club history on Oct. 8, 1992.

* Neil (No. 161 in 1998) is one of seven players in League history selected in the sixth round or later that appeared in 1,000 games for the franchise that drafted him, with the others being Alfredsson (1,178 GP w/ OTT), Dave Taylor (1,111 GP w/ LAK), Henrik Zetterberg (1,082 GP w/ DET), Luc Robitaille (1,077 GP w/ LAK), Don Sweeney (1,052 GP w/ BOS) and Tomas Holmstrom (1,026 GP w/ DET).
