Blue Bombers sign all-star receiver Kenny Lawler to two-year contract

American receiver Kenny Lawler has been signed by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers to a two-year deal that runs through the 2024 season.

Lawler, a 197-pound, 6-3 college athlete born: After spending the 2022 season with the Edmonton Elks, on June 25, 1994, in Pomona, California,
Lawler only played 12 games for the Elks because of injuries, but he remained one of the best receivers in the CFL. He caught 58 passes for 894 yards and five touchdowns while working with three different starting quarterbacks.

Lawler played in 29 games for the Blue Bombers in 2019 and 2021, helping the team win two consecutive Grey Cup championships by leading the team in receiving.

Lawler made his debut on the Blue Bombers’ practice roster in September 2018 and went on to have a breakout season in 2019. He had 41 receptions and a team-best 637 yards receiving and was named the club’s Most Outstanding Rookie Player for his efforts in 2019.

In his subsequent season in 2021, he was named a CFL All-Star and led the CFL with 1,014 yards receiving on 64 receptions, six of which were for touchdowns.

After a stellar career at the University of California, where he was ranked second on the school’s all-time touchdown receptions list and 12th overall in the Pac-12, Lawler was selected by the Seattle Seahawks in the seventh round of the 2016 NFL Draft. In 2018, he participated in the B.C. Lions’ training camp before signing with the Blue Bombers later that fall.

Blue Bombers re-sign Global linebacker Maruo

WINNIPEG, MB., – Les Maruo, a Global linebacker, has been selected by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on a one-year contract. Today was when he was supposed to become a free agent.

In 2022, Maruo donned a uniform for 17 regular-season games, the Western Final, and the Grey Cup. He worked more with the defense and added seven more special teams tackles while adding 14 tackles and a sack. In the Grey Cup match, Maruo also made two special teams tackles.

In his first season in 2021, Maruo played in seven games and recorded six defensive tackles for the team that won the Grey Cup that year.

Maruo was born in Japan, but his family moved to the United States when he was nine years old, and he spent his childhood in Wichita, Kansas. He played college football at the University of Texas-San Antonio. During his senior season, he started all 12 games for the Roadrunners and had 86 tackles, 4.5 sacks, two fumble recoveries, one interception, and one pass knockdown.

Over the past few winters, Maruo has also represented the Asahi Challengers and Panasonic Impulse in Japan’s X-League.

Revolution Receive $175,000 in General Allocation Money from Charlotte FC

New England receives GAM over two years in exchange for a 2023 International Roster Spot

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – In exchange for a spot on the 2023 International Roster, Charlotte FC gave the New England Revolution $75,000 in 2023 General Allocation Money (GAM) and $100,000 in 2024 GAM.

After Tuesday’s trade, the Revolution no longer have any International Roster Spots for the 2023 season. Carles Gil, a Revolution midfielder, received a Green Card from the United States, making him eligible for the MLS roster as a domestic player. Gustavo Bou, a Revolution forward, is still in Argentina and is expected to receive his Green Card soon.

On Saturday, February 18, Orlando City SC will serve as the Revolution’s final of five preseason matches. At 7:30 p.m. ET, the match at Exploria Stadium begins.

On Saturday, February 25 at 7:30 p.m. Eastern Time, New England hosts Charlotte FC to begin the 2023 MLS Regular Season. D-backs agree to terms with Andrew Chafin on a 1-year contract

The Arizona Diamondbacks agreed to terms with LHP Andrew Chafin on a 1-year contract with a club option for 2024. MLB Bio.

Phillies sign Seranthony Domínguez to contract extension

President of Baseball Operations David Dombrowski made the announcement today that the Phillies have signed right-handed reliever Seranthony Domnguez to a two-year contract extension with a club option for 2025.

With nine saves, a 1.14 WHIP, 61 strikeouts in 51.0 innings, and a career-high 54 appearances in 2022, the 28-year-old held opponents to a.197 batting average. Domnguez pitched in every round of the postseason, going 2-0 with a save, a 1.69 ERA, a 0.75 WHIP, and 18 strikeouts to just one walk in nine appearances. Since joining the Phillies in 2018, he has made 135 appearances in 134.2 innings, going 11-10 with 25 saves, a 3.14 earned run average, and 165 strikeouts.

According to Statcast data, Domnguez’s fastball has averaged 97.8 mph throughout his career. He is tied with teammate José Alvarado for the fastest fastball among all 166 pitchers who have thrown at least 500 pitches for the team since pitch tracking began in 2008. In terms of fastball velocity, he was in the 96th percentile of all pitchers during the previous season.

The Phillies have reached an agreement with all players who are eligible for arbitration for the 2023 season as a result of Domnguez’s extension.

Colorado Rockies and Bud Black agree to one-year contract extension

Agreement extends the Rockies’ manager through the 2024 season

DENVER – Today, the Colorado Rockies made the announcement that they have reached an agreement with Manager Bud Black to extend their one-year contract through the 2024 season.

Since being named Colorado’s seventh manager on Nov. 7, 2016, Black, 65, has played for the Rockies for six seasons, going 417-453. He trails Clint Hurdle (1,159 games, 534-625) and Don Baylor (909 games, 440-469) in the history of the franchise in terms of wins and games managed. Black will have managed the most games in the franchise’s history if he manages through his extension.

Black spent the 2016 season working as a special assistant to the general manager of the Los Angeles Angels. Before that, he had managed the San Diego Padres for eight seasons and part of a ninth, winning 649 games, which was the second most in Padres history. He was named National League Manager of the Year in 2010 after leading the Padres to a 90-72 record. He is 1,066-1,166 all-time as a manager. On April 10, 2022, he beat the Dodgers to become the 66th manager in Major League Baseball to win 1,000 games. Along with Dusty Baker (2,093), Terry Francona (1,874), Buck Showalter (1,652), and Bob Melvin (1,435), Black is one of five current Major League managers to surpass 1,000 wins in a managerial career.

Black previously worked as the Angels’ pitching coach for seven seasons (2000-2006), during which time the team won the World Series in 2002. In addition, he worked as a pitching coach for Triple-A Buffalo (1998) and a special assistant to the general manager for four years in the Cleveland Indians organization (from 1996 to 1999). Black pitched for Seattle in 1981, Kansas City in 1982-1988, Cleveland in 1988-1990, 1995, Toronto in 1990, and San Francisco in 1991-1994. Over the course of his career, he went 121-116 with a 3.84 ERA.

Red Sox agree to one-year contract with infielder Yu Chang

BOSTON, MA – The Boston Red Sox today signed infielder Yu Chang to a one-year contract for the 2023 season. To make room for Chang on the 40-man roster, Boston placed infielder Trevor Story on the 60-Day Injured List due to right elbow ulnar collateral ligament repair.

Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom made the announcement.

Chang, 27, played in 69 Major League games in 2022 with the Cleveland Guardians, Pittsburgh Pirates, Tampa Bay Rays, and Red Sox, batting .208 (35-for-168) with four home runs. Born in Taitung, Taiwan, he made Cleveland’s Opening Day roster in each of the last three seasons (2020-22). The right-handed hitter has started 47 games at first base, 37 at third base, 33 at second base, 17 at shortstop, and three at designated hitter during his Major League career.

Story, 30, underwent a successful internal bracing procedure of the right elbow ulnar collateral ligament on January 10. The right-handed hitter has batted .268 (853-for-3,179) with an .849 OPS, 174 home runs, 516 RBI, and 113 stolen bases in 839 career games with the Colorado Rockies (2016-21) and Boston (2022).

Padres sign RHP Michael Wacha to one-year contract

San Diego – President of Baseball Operations and General Manager A.J. Preller announced today that the San Diego Padres have signed right-handed pitcher Michael Wacha to a one-year contract for the 2023 season with player options for 2024, 2025, and 2026. A two-year club option for the 2024 and 2025 seasons is also included in the agreement.

In his 10th season in the major leagues, in 2022, Wacha (WAHK-uh), 31, made 23 starts for the Boston Red Sox and went 11-2 with a 3.32 ERA (47 ER, 127.1 IP). The right-hander, who is 6-6 and weighs 215 pounds, had a 2.61 ERA in his first 20 starts before giving up 14 runs in his last three appearances (13.1 innings). He had the lowest ERA among Red Sox starters (min. five appearances), and his 1.12 WHIP was second-best in his career only to his rookie season in 2013 (1.10 in 64.2 innings with St. Louis). The native of Jupiter, Florida, went at least 5.0 innings in 17 of his starts, including 6.0 innings or more in 10 of them, and the Red Sox went 16-7 in his 23 starts. He has now started more than 20 games six times, including the last three seasons with 162 games. With RISP, he kept left-handed batters to a.188 AVG/.598 OPS (37-for-197) and opponents to a.189 AVG/.549 OPS.

In 225 career Major League outings (204 starts) between the Cardinals (2013-19), New York Mets (2020), Tampa Bay Rays (2021), and Red Sox, the Texas A&M University graduate is 74-50 with a 4.05 ERA (519 ER, 1,153.2 IP). St. Louis selected him in the first round (19th overall) of the 2012 First-Year Player Draft. He was an All-Star in the National League in 2015 and made six Postseason starts and two appearances in relief, going 4-3 with a 5.21 ERA (22 ER, 38.0 IP). After going 2-0 with two scoreless starts against Clayton Kershaw (6.2 innings in Game 2 and 7.0 innings in Game 6), he became one of only four rookies to ever be named MVP of a League Championship Series during the Cardinals’ NL pennant-winning campaign in 2013. His 18.2 innings of scoreless innings against the Red Sox in the World Series continued.

Dodgers agree to terms with Jimmy Nelson, Alex Reyes & David Peralta

Los Angeles, California – The Los Angeles Dodgers have moved right-handed pitchers Walker Buehler, J. P. Feyereisen, and Blake Treinen to the 60-day injured list and signed right-handed pitchers Alex Reyes and Jimmy Nelson, as well as outfielder David Peralta, to Major League contracts.

Nelson, 33, agrees to a $1.2 million one-year contract. Following Tommy John surgery, the former Alabama right-hander missed the entire season. In 2021, he pitched for the Dodgers in 28 games and went 1-2 with a 1.86 earned run average (6 earned runs/29.0 innings) and 44 walks. Since joining the Dodgers in 2020, the Florida native has played in parts of seven Major League seasons. He is 34-48 with a 4.12 earned run average (303 earned runs per 662.1 innings) and 622 strikeouts over his MLB career. After being selected in the second round of the 2010 First Year Player Draft out of the University of Alabama, he began his professional career with the Milwaukee Brewers. He went 33-46 with a 4.22 ERA (297 ER/633.1 IP) and 578 strikeouts during his six years with the Brewers. After going 12-6 in 28 starts with a 3.49 ERA (68 ER/175.1 IP) and 199 strikeouts, he finished ninth in the Cy Young voting in 2017.

For $1.1 million, Reyes, 28, signs a one-year contract through the 2023 season. After going 10-8 with a 3.24 ERA (26 ER/72.1 IP) and 95 strikeouts in 2021 with the St. Louis Cardinals, the right-hander missed the entire season due to a right shoulder injury. In 38 first-half appearances, he was a MLB All-Star and went 5-3 with 20 saves and a 1.52 ERA (7 ER/41.1 IP). Since making his Major League debut in 2016 with the Cardinals, he has played in the Major Leagues for a portion of five seasons. In 101 games (seven starts), he is 16-11 with a 2.86 earned run average, 177 strikeouts, and 31 saves. On December 3, 2012, the Cardinals signed him as an international free agent.

35-year-old Peralta signs a $6.5 million contract for one year. After spending the previous season with Arizona and Tampa Bay, he will join the Dodgers. He hit.251 (110-for-439), had 12 home runs, and scored 59 runs in 134 games. Before being traded to Tampa Bay in exchange for minor league catcher Christian Cerda, he started the season with Arizona and hit.248/.316/.460 with 12 home runs and 41 RBI in 87 games. The left-handed outfielder from Valencia, Venezuela, has been playing in the Major Leagues since 2014. In 1,008 games, he has hit a combined.281 (1001-for-3558), with 110 home runs and 486 RBI. On July 3, 2013, he became a free agent and joined the Diamondbacks from the Amarillo Sox of the American Association Independent League.
