MBB-FBS: Stanford Cardinal (11-15) at USC Trojans (18-8)

The USC Trojans (18-8, 10-5) will host the Stanford Cardinal (11-15, 5-10) at the Galen Center on Feb. 18 at 7:00 p.m.  The game will air on ESPNU with Roxy Bernstein and Steve Wojciechowski calling the action.

FACING STANFORD — The Stanford Cardinal (11-15, 5-10) are coming off a 73-64 loss at UCLA on Feb. 16, but have won 6 of their last 9 games. Senior forward Spencer Jones leads Stanford with a 13.4 scoring average. This is the only meeting between USC and Stanford this season. USC lost twice to Stanford last season, falling 64-61 at home and 75-69 at Stanford. USC trails in the all-time series 128-129 (1 win vacated due to NCAA penalty, orginal record 129-129).

COLORADO ON DECK — USC’s next game will be at the Colorado Buffaloes (15-12, 7-9) on Feb. 23 at 6:00 p.m. (PT) at the CU Events Center. Colorado will play at Arizona on Feb. 18 before hosting USC. Junior forward Tristan da Silva leads the Buffaloes in scoring with a 16.4 points per game average. USC defeated Colorado 68-61 at the Galen Center on Jan. 12 to improved to 9-16 all-time against the Buffaloes. USC won 61-58 at Colorado last season.

IT STARTS WITH DEFENSE — USC held California to 27.7 shooting on Nov. 30, the lowest by an opponent since holding Stanford to a 25.4 shooting percentage on March 3, 2021. USC allowed Oregon to make 53.8 percent of its shots, the only opponent this season to make more than 50 percent of its shots against USC. USC has held its opponent to under 40 percent shooting in 15 of its 26 games this season. USC is holding its opponents to a 39.0 shooting percentage this season, 8th in the country. Over the last four seasons, USC’s defense has held the opposition to 38.9 FG percentage, 3rd in the country.

LEADERS OF THE PAC — USC is third in conference regular season wins among Pac-12 teams for the past six seasons (since the 2017-18 season). USC is 70-39, Arizona is 73-37, while UCLA is 73-35 in that stretch, through games of Feb. 17. Next up would be Oregon at 67-41 and Colorado at 61-49.

ENJOYING THE HOME COOKING — USC is 13-1 at the Galen Center this season, losing the opener to FGCU on Nov. 7, then winning the next 13 games. The 13-game home winning streak is USC’s longest single-season home winning streak since the Trojans won the first 15 games at the Galen Center in the 2015-16 season. It is also the fifth-longest home winning streak in school history.

PETERSON PROVIDING THE ASSIST — Guard Drew Peterson leads USC and is fifth among Pac-12 players with 119 assists. Peterson is one of two players in a Power 6 conference (Jalen Pickett of Penn State) averaging at least 13.5 points, 6.0 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game this season. Peterson is averaging 14.5 points, 6.4 rebounds and 4.6 assists per game. He scored a career-high 30 points vs. Cal on Feb. 16, his 21st game this season in double figures.

JEKYLL & HYDE FROM WAY OUTSIDE — USC made 52.2 percent of its 3-pointers vs. California on Feb. 16, its highest shooting percentage from beyond the arc since making 53.8 percent vs. Washington State on Feb. 20, 2022. USC shot 7.1 percent (1-for-14) from three-point range in its previous game at Oregon State on Feb. 11, the lowest in the Andy Enfield era. USC now has nine games this season making at least 38 percent from 3-point range. In those nine games USC has made 46.3 percent of its 3-pointers (87-for-188), while it has averaged 23.2 percent from beyond the arc in the other 17 games (65-for-280).

WHEN FULLY LOADED… — USC owns a 5-1 record in games this season it has the entire roster available. Included in that stretch is three wins over team in the top five in the Pac-12 standings. USC’s one loss when the entire roster available was at Arizona, where Arizona is 33-1 in its last 34 home games. Forward Vincent Iwuchukwu missed USC’s first 16 games this season and forward Joshua Morgan (right ankle) and guard Reese Dixon-Waters (left foot) have missed the Trojans’ last four games, both injured vs. Washington State on Feb. 2.

9 TO 10 — When Oziyah Sellers scored a career-best 11 points vs. California on Feb. 16, he became the ninth Trojan this season to have at least one game of scoring 10 or more points.

BOOGIE DOWN, BUT NOT FOR LONG – Senior guard Boogie Ellis scored 9 points at Oregon State on Feb. 11, snapping a 14-game streak of scoring in double figures. He then followed up that game with 22 points vs. California on Feb. 16. He has averaged 18.3 points the last 15 games, including scoring a career-high 31 points vs. UCLA on Jan. 26. He began his streak by scoring a then career-best 28 points vs. Auburn on Dec. 18. Ellis leads USC with a 16.5 scoring average and leads the team with 59 three-pointers made and 88 free throws made. He is also second among Trojans with 41 steals.

THE MEN OF STEAL — Kobe Johnson (59), Boogie Ellis (41) and Drew Peterson (31) have combined for 131 steals this season, the second most by a Pac-12 trio. In total steals, Johnson ranks second among Pac-12 players, Ellis is tied for 4th and Peterson tied for 10th.

Caleb is 50-32 overall at the College, including 31-20 in ODAC games.

Finest Season In 10 Years
H-SC is enjoying its finest season in 10 years, recently attaining its highest national ranking, while ranked second in this week’s NCAA Regional Rankings. In addition, the NCAA announced its current men’s basketball Top 16 on Thursday night (Feb. 16), and the Tigers are at No. 11 … though there remains lots of basketball yet to play before the Official Selection Monday on Feb. 27. H-SC’s 20 overall wins, as well as the 14 conference wins, are the most under Coach Kimbrough. It’s also the program’s highest win totals since 2012-13 (23-5, 14-2)-the last season that H-SC advanced to the NCAA Tournament-while only the fourth 20-win season for the Tigers in the last 20 years.

H-SC has secured the No. 2 seed for the 2023 ODAC Tournament that will take place next week as the Tigers will play in a quarterfinal contest on Friday, Feb. 24, at 6 p.m. at the Salem Civic Center in Salem. Complete details for the upcoming tournament will be available following the conclusion of the regular season.

MBB-D2: East Central Tigers (15-10) at Henderson State Reddies (12-13)

After its most dominant performance of the season, Henderson State will look to make it five wins in a row when the East Central Tigers come to the Duke Wells Center Saturday, Feb. 18 at 3 p.m.

REDDIES REPORT
Henderson’s offense was cooking Thursday night, defeating the GAC’s third best team by 34 points, 106-72, marking HSU’s second largest margin of victory over a conference opponent in the GAC era. In addition to all 12 men on the roster scoring, five Reddies finished in double figures, led by Franck Kamgain with 19 points along with five assists and five rebounds.

Zyon Patterson and KJ Stewart each logged their season highs in points, with Patterson going for 17 while Stewart recorded 16. Malik Riddle (11) and Josh Mason (10) were the other two players to reach double digits, while Riddle pulled down a career-high 14 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season along with four assists and one block.

During this four game winning streak, Henderson has shot the ball extremely well. Thanks to a 49.2 field-goal shooting percentage and 44.7 percent from beyond the arc over the last 160 minutes of basketball action, the Reddies now sit tied for sixth in the GAC standings – just one game back of Saturday’s opponent, the East Central Tigers.

In this season’s first meeting with ECU in Alva, Oklahoma, the home team claimed victory, 73-53. Henderson struggled to generate much offense that day, hitting on just 38.8 percent (19-49) of its field goal attempts while making 16.7 percent (2-12) of its threes. The Reddies have fared much better at home against the Tigers, with their last loss in Arkadelphia in the head-to-head series coming on Feb. 10, 2018.

SCOUTING EAST CENTRAL
Similar to Henderson, East Central appears to be playing its best basketball of the season right now, sporting a three-game winning streak, including wins over the GAC’s second-place team, Southern Arkansas, and third-place Southeastern. Most recently, the Tigers defeated Ouachita Baptist across the street, 72-64.

Keyon Thomas and Quinton Johnson II are responsible for a large portion of ECU’s offense as the only two players in double digits, scoring 13.0 and 12.8 points per game, respectively. During this winning streak, Johnson II has averaged 16.3 points per outing while shooting 48.6 percent from the field. The Tigers’ forte is their defense as they own the nation’s 31st-ranked scoring defense at 65.8 points per contest.

East Central is currently in fifth place at 10-9 in GAC play while standing just one game out of fourth. On the other side, ECU is also just one game out of seventh. Two of the Tigers’ final three games are on the road, where they are 7-4, with their season finale coming at Oklahoma Baptist. The orange-and-black are one of five conference teams with a winning record both on the road and at home.

WBB-D2: East Central Tigers (10-13) at Henderson State Reddies (15-10)

Henderson State faces its final opponent from the Sooner State this Saturday when East Central visits the Duke Wells Center on Feb. 18 at 1 p.m.

REDDIES REPORT
Henderson pulled away from Southeastern Oklahoma State in the final minute of the game, going 8-8 from the foul line after the Savage Storm had brought the contest within five. HSU went 23-58 (39.7 percent) from the field, while Abbie Jiles and Sonni Martin made teams only two three-pointers.

Ashley Farrar’s 21 points against the Savage Storm puts the senior closer to cracking into the top five of all-time scorers in HSU history. The Green Forest, Ark. native has 1292 total points and is 49 away from tying Reddie legend Aungelique Sledge (1341), who is fifth in career points. Farrar is also six triples away from moving into the top five in career three-point field goals.

The Reddies’ win over the Savage Storm moved them into third place in the league standings. Arkansas Tech was tied with HSU in the conference rankings but was bested by Northwestern Oklahoma State and fell to 11-8 in GAC play. Henderson and ATU will meet in the Duke Wells Center later this month.

HSU won a back-and-forth contest that had 11 lead changes in Ada, Okla. against East Central in the first meeting 66-61. The Reddies and Tigers were tied 58-58 with three minutes left in the game, and Farrar went 6-6 at the foul line to secure the win.

Henderson trails East Central in the head-to-head matchup 11-14 but has won three consecutive games and five out of the last six contests. HSU’s last home win over ECU came in 2020 when the Reddies beat the Tigers 76-66. Farrar and Gracie Raby were the only current players to feature in the win.

SCOUTING EAST CENTRAL
The Tigers’ loss to Ouachita Baptist snapped a seven-game win streak over OUA dating back to 2019.  East Central had won three straight GAC games before falling to the Tigers and is tied with three other teams in the league standings with a 7-12 conference record.

Makenzie Crusoe leads ECU in scoring with 12.9 points a game and is shooting 43.0 percent from the field and 35.6 percent from beyond the arc this season. Against OUA, Crusoe was held to a season-low two points.

East Central’s Emily Wilson leads the GAC in three-point field goal percentage, converting 45.9 percent of her shots from beyond the arc, and the team is scoring 7.2 triples a game. The Tigers are averaging 63.8 points a game and are shooting 37.2 percent from the field and 30.8 percent from deep.

NHL Morning Skate – Feb. 18, 2023

0

* The Hurricanes and Capitals will contest the NHL’s 37th outdoor regular-season game when the teams take to Carter-Finley Stadium for the 2023 Navy Federal Credit Union NHL Stadium Series tonight at 8 p.m. ET on ABC, ESPN+, SN360 and TVAS2.

* Connor McDavid became the first player in 2022-23 to reach the 100-point milestone and matched Sidney Crosby (6x) for the most 100-point campaigns by an active player.

* The Eastern Conference Wild Card race intensified following Friday’s results, with more potential positioning changes to come after Saturday’s 13-game slate.

HURRICANES, CAPITALS READY TO CLASH AT CARTER-FINLEY STADIUM
The Metropolitan Division-leading Hurricanes (36-10-8, 80 points), who trail only the Bruins (41-8-5, 87 points) in the NHL’s overall standings, eye to be the 15th team – and second in as many seasons (TBL: 2022 SS) – to win its inaugural appearance in an outdoor game when they host the Capitals (28-23-6, 62 points) in the 2023 Navy Federal Credit Union NHL Stadium Series on Saturday.

* Brent Burns (11-29—40 in 54 GP) has scored an NHL-best (tied) seven goals among defensemen since Jan. 1 en route to surpassing his total from the 2021-22 campaign with San Jose (10-44—54 in 82 GP). Meanwhile, should the first-year Hurricanes blueliner reach the 30-assist mark at Carter-Finley Stadium, he would become the seventh defenseman in League history with multiple such seasons at age 37 or older. Andrei Markov (2016-17 & 2015-16) and Nicklas Lidstrom (2010-11, 2009-10, 2008-09 & 2007-08) are the only ones to do so in the past dozen years.

* Following a multi-point performance in Carolina’s precursor to the 2023 Stadium Series, Sebastian Aho (24-24—48 in 47 GP) sits two shy of reaching the 50-point mark in fewer than 50 games for the third time in his career (45 GP in 2018-19 & 2021-22). Only one other skater in Hurricanes team history has accomplished the feat multiple times: Eric Staal (3x; best: 35 GP in 2005-06).

* Nicklas Backstrom found the score sheet in Washington’s final tune-up for the contest Thursday against the Panthers (1-0—1) and has collected 3-4—7 in 14 games this season. Backstrom (1-3—4) leads all Capitals players in assists and points in outdoor games and sits one shy of joining Henrik Zetterberg (0-7—7), Jonathan Toews (2-5—7 in 6 GP) and Marian Hossa (0-4—4 in 3 GP) as the fourth player with four or more career helpers outdoors.

* Anthony Mantha is one of six current Capitals skaters (min. 1 GP in 2022-23) set to appear in his second career outdoor game following a 2-1—3 performance with Detroit during the 2017 Centennial Classic with Detroit. With another multi-point outing against the Hurricanes, Mantha can join David Pastrnak(1-1—2 in 2019 WC & 3-0—3 in 2021 LT) as just the second player with two or more points in each of his first two career outdoor appearances.

McDAVID MARCHES TO AND PAST 100-POINT MILESTONE

Connor McDavid (0-2—2) factored on Edmonton’s game-opening goal to become the first player with 100 points this season and achieved a number of notable feats in the process on a night the Oilers honored the memory of superfan Ben Stelter.

* The Oilers captain (42-59—101 in 56 GP) recorded his sixth career 100-point season and already matched the most by an active skater, a mark held by 18-season veteran Sidney Crosby. In doing so, McDavid also became the fourth player in NHL history to be the first to 100 points in at least five seasons.

* McDavid became the seventh player in NHL history to hit 100 points within his first 56 games of a season multiple times (also 53 GP in 2020-21), following Wayne Gretzky (12x), Mario Lemieux (8x), Mike Bossy (3x), Phil Esposito (3x), Jari Kurri (2x) and Guy Lafleur (2x). McDavid is the only active player to hit the mark in fewer than 62 contests.

#NHLStats Pack: Connor McDavid Notches 100th Point of Season, Approaches 800 in Career

ICYMI: The Oilers honored the memory of Ben Stelter on Friday by launching the Ben Stelter Fund as his family took part in the ceremonial puck drop prior to the contest. Ben, the superfan who passed away in August at age six, was frequently seen in Edmonton’s locker room dishing out high-fives and encouragement to players during the 2021-22 season and left his mark throughout the organization and community.

STREAKING RANGERS RALLY FROM THREE-GOAL DEFICIT

The streaking Rangers staged one of the three multi-goal comeback victories during Friday’s five-game slate by posting their first three-goal comeback win since Nov. 23, 2019 in Montreal. New York improved to 8-0-1 in its past nine games and own the League’s longest active winning streak (7 GP).

* The Wild defeated the Stars in a potential First Round matchup to create space in their position as the second Wild Card club in the Western Conference, the Blackhawks set a franchise record with their seventh multi-goal comeback win of the season and the Kings moved within one point of first place in the Pacific Division with a victory on ESPN.

ISLANDERS RALLY FOR CRUCIAL POINTS AS PLAYOFF RACE INTENSIFIES IN EAST

Six teams are separated by five points in the Eastern Conference Wild Card race, including the Penguins and Islanders who met Friday in a back-and-forth contest that saw New York salvage a regulation victory on home ice.

* Sidney Crosby (1-1—2) continued his scoring ways against the Islanders by factoring on two of the Penguins’ first four goals to take a 4-2 lead, but Anders Lee (2-1—3) and Brock Nelson (2-1—3) spurred a New York rally capped off by Zach Parise scoring the game-winning goal in his 1,200th career contest. With the win, the Islanders (28-23-7, 63 points) leapfrogged the idle Capitals (28-23-6, 62 points) and Panthers (28-24-6, 62 points) for the final Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference – right below Pittsburgh (27-18-9, 63 points).

* Now tied with 63 points apiece in the two Wild Card positions, Pittsburgh and New York will each take the ice Saturday in hopes of strengthening their playoff position. The Penguins will host the Devils – who have won 20 of their 27 road games this season and sit five points out of first place in the Metropolitan Division – while the Islanders visit the League-leading Bruins – owners of a 22-2-3 record as hosts this season.

* Three of the other four clubs in that grouping are in action Saturday, with the Capitals (28-23-6, 62 points) taking part in the 2023 Navy Federal Credit Union NHL Stadium Series, the Red Wings (26-20-8, 60 points) are wrapping up a four-game West Coast swing in Seattle and the Sabres (27-22-4, 58 points) are closing out a California trip in San Jose.

MAPLE LEAFS ADD CONN SMYTHE WINNER & STANLEY CUP CHAMPION IN O’REILLY

After making a splash in the trade market by acquiring Stanley Cup-winning captain Ryan O’Reilly from the Blues late Friday, the Maple Leafs will hit the ice on Hockey Night in Canada against their oldest rival. Toronto, who also acquired forward Noel Acciari in a three-time trade involving the Wild, ranks second in the Atlantic Division with a record of 33-14-8 (74 points) – one point ahead of Tampa Bay (35-16-3, 73 points) who have a game in hand.

Phillies sign José Alvarado to contract extension

0

President of Baseball Operations David Dombrowski made the announcement today that the Phillies have extended left-handed reliever José Alvarado’s contract for a total of three years, which includes a club option for 2026 and will keep him in place through 2025.

With 59 appearances in 2022, Alvarado, 27, tied for the team lead with a 3.18 earned run average and 81 strikeouts in 51.0 innings. He also limited opponents to a.203/.296/.289 slash line with just two home runs. In his final 22 appearances of the regular season, he gave up one run in 21.0 innings and had an earned run average of 0.43. Alvarado had the most strikeouts per nine innings of any Phillies reliever ever to pitch at least 50.0 innings in a season, ranking fourth among qualifying major league relievers, and he led all Phillies relievers with 1.7 fWAR in 2022. The Venezuelan native has pitched 106.2 innings in 123 appearances over his two seasons with the Phillies, going 11-3 with seven saves, a 3.71 earned run average, and 149 strikeouts.

Alvarado threw 207 pitches in 2022 at 100.0 mph or higher, the most of any left-handed pitcher and sixth most in baseball, according to Statcast data. Aroldis Chapman is the only southpaw with more career pitches at 100.0 mph or higher than Alvarado’s since pitch tracking began in 2008.

Cubs agree to terms with INF Edwin Ríos on a one-year Major League contract

0

CHICAGO – Edwin Ros, an infielder for the Chicago Cubs, has signed a one-year major league contract with the team. The deal’s terms were not made public. Ethan Roberts, a right-handed pitcher, has been placed on the 60-day injured list in a similar move as he continues to recover from Tommy John surgery.

Ros, 28, has been a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers for a portion of four seasons (2019-22), during which time he batted.219 (57-for-260), had nine doubles, one triple, 20 home runs, and 43 RBI in 112 games. He has played 36 games mostly at third base and 32 games mostly at first base, with brief stints in right field and left field. During the Dodgers’ 2020 World Series championship run, Ross played in seven postseason games and hit one home run on average every 13.0 at-bats.

Before being placed on the 10-day injured list on June 3 due to a right hamstring strain, Ros started the season for the Dodgers and batted.244 (21-for-86) with a double, seven home runs, and 17 RBI in 27 games. Before being optioned to Triple-A on August 16, he began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Oklahoma City on July 28. In 48 games for Oklahoma City, Ross hit.259 (49-for-189) with 17 doubles, nine home runs, and 39 RBI, with 20 walks contributing to a.339 on-base percentage.

In 498 minor league games, the left-handed Ros has a.291 average (541-for-1,859), a.347 on-base percentage, a.882 on-base percentage, 132 doubles, four triples, 104 home runs, and 365 RBI. He was named to Tulsa’s Texas League Mid-Season All-Star team and Baseball America’s Double-A All-Star team in 2017.
