White Sox claim Yoán Aybar off waivers from Yankees; place Jonathan Stiever on 60-day injured list

GLENDALE, Ariz. – The Chicago White Sox have claimed left-handed pitcher Yoán Aybar off waivers from the New York Yankees and placed right-hander Jonathan Stiever on the 60-day injured list.

Aybar, 24, was claimed off waivers by the Yankees from Colorado on March 20 after being designated for assignment on March 18. The Bani, Dominican Republic native spent the entire 2021 season in the Rockies organization, going 2-6 with a 6.22 ERA (32 ER/46.1 IP), 53 strikeouts and two saves.

The 2021 season marked Aybar’s fourth as a pitcher after beginning his professional career as an outfielder in the Boston system (2014-17). The 6-foot-2, 210-pound Aybar has recorded 10.3 strikeouts per 9.0 IP (150 SO/131.2 IP) since transitioning to a pitcher.

Aybar is 5-10 with a 5.06 ERA (74 ER/131.2 IP), 150 strikeouts, two saves and just nine home runs allowed in 110 career minor-league pitching appearances over three seasons (2018-19, ’21) in the Red Sox and Rockies organizations. He originally was signed by Boston as an international free agent on July 3, 2013.

Stiever, 23, underwent season-ending surgery on his right lat on August 23, 2021. He spent most of last season with Class AAA Charlotte but made one start with the White Sox.

Following the moves, Chicago’s 40-man roster remains at 40.
