Red Sox claim right-handed pitcher Ralph Garza off waivers from Minnesota Twins

Boston Designates Right-Handed Pitcher Kyle Tyler for Assignment

BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox today claimed right-handed pitcher Ralph Garza off waivers from the Minnesota Twins and optioned him to Triple-A Worcester. To make room for Garza on the 40-man roster, the club designated right-handed pitcher Kyle Tyler for assignment.

Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom made the announcement.

Garza, 27, made his major league debut last season, posting a 3.56 ERA (12 ER/30.1 IP) in 27 relief appearances for the Houston Astros and Twins. The right-hander finished his season with Minnesota, where he did not allow an earned run in 13 of his 18 appearances and tossed more than 1.0 inning five times. In 74 relief appearances at the Triple-A level, Garza is 11-3 with a 3.82 ERA (56 ER/132.0 IP) and a .198 opponent batting average. Originally selected by the Astros in the 26th round of the 2015 MLB Draft out of the University of Oklahoma, the Texas native is 27-12 with a 3.72 ERA (140 ER/339.0 IP) in 180 career minor league appearances (three starts).

Tyler, 25, made his major league debut last season, posting a 2.92 ERA (4 ER/12.1 IP) in five relief appearances for the Angels. He spent the majority of the 2021 season with Triple-A Salt Lake and Double-A Rocket City in the Angels system, combining to go 6-4 with a 3.66 ERA (35 ER/86.0 IP) in 20 appearances (14 starts). Originally selected by the Angeles in the 20th round of the 2018 MLB Draft out of the University of Oklahoma, Tyler is 17-6 with a 3.25 ERA (84 ER/232.1 IP) in 60 career minor league appearances (32 starts).
