Red Sox agree to terms with five players on one-year contracts

BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox today agreed to terms with five players on one-year, non-guaranteed contracts for the 2022 season, thus avoiding salary arbitration: infielder Christian Arroyo, third baseman Rafael Devers, outfielder Alex Verdugo, right-handed pitcher Nick Pivetta, and left-handed pitcher Josh Taylor.

Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom made the announcement.

Arroyo, 26, has hit .235 (104-for-442) with 15 home runs and 60 RBI in 142 games for the San Francisco Giants (2017), Tampa Bay Rays (2018-19), Cleveland Indians (2020), and Red Sox (2020-21). The right-handed hitter set career highs last season in games (57), slugging percentage (.445), OPS (.769), runs (22), hits (43), doubles (12), home runs (6), and RBI (25). He has not committed an error in 75 career games at second base (275 total chances). Arroyo started at second base in all 11 of the Red Sox’ games in the 2021 Postseason, batting .237 (9-for-38) with one double, one triple, and one home run.

Devers, 25, has hit .279 (598-for-2,142) with an .847 OPS, 112 home runs, and 367 RBI in 548 games for the Red Sox since making his major league debut in 2017. The left-handed hitter was the American League’s starting third baseman in the All-Star Game last season, also winning the Silver Slugger Award at the position and finishing 11th in Most Valuable Player voting. Devers hit .279 (165-for-591) with 38 home runs and 113 RBI in 156 games last season, leading major league third basemen in home runs, RBI, extra-base hits (76), and slugging percentage (.538).

Verdugo, 25, has hit .290 (344-for-1,188) with 33 home runs and 127 RBI in 357 games for the Los Angeles Dodgers (2017-19) and Red Sox (2020-21). The left-handed hitter set career highs last season in games (146), hits (158), runs (88), home runs (13), RBI (63), doubles (32), extra-base hits (47), walks (51), and stolen bases (6). Verdugo also recorded a career-high nine outfield assists in 2021, and tied for the American League lead in defensive runs saved in left field (7). He started each of the Sox’ 11 Postseason games in left field and hit .310 (13-for-42) with six RBI.

Pivetta, 29, is 30-38 with a 5.16 ERA (322 ER/561.1 IP) in 125 major league appearances (103 stats) for the Philadelphia Phillies (2017-20) and Red Sox (2020-21). Last season with Boston, the right-hander recorded career bests in wins (9) and ERA (4.53), making 30 starts and striking out 175 batters in 155.0 innings. In the Postseason, Pivetta went 1-0 with a 2.63 ERA (4 ER/13.2 IP) and 1.02 WHIP in three appearances (one start). In Game 3 of the ALDS against Tampa Bay, he tossed four scoreless innings in the Red Sox’ 6-4 win.

Taylor, 29, is 4-3 with a 3.69 ERA (42 ER/102.1 IP) in 121 appearances (1 start) for the Red Sox since making his major league debut in 2019. The left-hander posted a 3.40 ERA (18 ER/47.2 IP) over a career-high 61 appearances last season. Taylor’s 2021 season included 26 consecutive scoreless appearances from April 30 through July 5, the longest streak by a left-handed pitcher in franchise history and second-longest overall. The Arizona native made his Postseason debut in 2021 and allowed one earned run in 4.0 innings over six outings.

With today’s agreement, the Red Sox have no remaining unsigned players eligible for salary arbitration.
