Mark Mathias, pronounced muh-THIGH-us, was acquired today by the Pittsburgh Pirates for a player to be named from the Texas Rangers organization.
Mathias, 28, was designated for assignment on March 3 and spent the majority of the 2022 season at Triple-A. In 58 games played between Nashville and Round Rock, he hit a combined.322 (64-for-199) with 10 doubles, one triple, nine home runs, 34 RBI,.422 OBP,.518 slugging percentage, and.940 OPS.
In 2022, Mathias also appeared in six games for Milwaukee before Texas acquired him on August 2.
He hit.277 (18-for-65) with three doubles, five home runs, 16 RBI,.365 OBP,.554 slugging percentage, and.919 OPS in 24 games with the Rangers in the final month and a half of 2022.
Mathias has made 10 appearances in right field, 7 at second base, 6 in left field, 4 at first base, 2 at third base, and 1 in center field over the course of his big league career.
Right-handed pitcher Max Kranick has been placed on the 60-day injured list to make room for Mathias on the 40-man roster.
