Phillies announce roster moves

The Phillies have announced the following transactions:

  • Center fielder Brandon Marsh and right-handed starter Noah Syndergaard have both reported to the club.
  • Infielder Jean Segura has been reinstated from the 60-day Injured List.
  • Right-handed starter Kyle Gibson has been activated from the Bereavement List.
  • Infielder Didi Gregorius has been released.

Marsh, 24, was acquired from the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday and posted a .226/.284/.353 slash line with nine doubles, two triples, eight homers, 37 RBI, 34 runs and eight steals in 93 games with the Angels this season. The left-handed hitter is batting .288 (19-66) with runners in scoring position this year. Per Statcast data, Marshā€™s nine Outs Above Average are tied for second-most among qualifying outfielders in 2022. Additionally, his sprint speed (29.0 feet per second) ranks in the 91st percentile among qualifying players in the majors this season.

Syndergaard, 29, was acquired from the Angels on Tuesday as well and posted a 3.83 ERA (34 ER, 80.0 IP) in 15 starts for Los Angeles this year. He has thrown at least 5.0 innings and allowed three earned runs or fewer in 10 of his 15 starts this season. Syndergaard has thrown 326 sinkers this year and opponents are hitting just .179 with a .211 slugging percentage and .222 wOBA against it. Among 78 pitchers in MLB this season who have thrown at least 300 sinkers, Syndergaardā€™s .211 opponents slugging percentage and .222 opponents wOBA rank first.

Segura was initially placed on the injured list on June 1 with a fracture of the right index finger. In 44 games for the Phillies this season, Segura is slashing .275/.324/.407 with a .731 OPS and 106 OPS+ in 179 plate appearances. He appeared in eight rehab games for triple-A Lehigh Valley and went 6-for-30 (.200 AVG) with six walks and six strikeouts.

Gibson is 6-4 with a 4.60 ERA (55 ER, 107.2 IP) in 20 starts with 84 strikeouts to 31 walks for Philadelphia this year. The Phillies are 12-8 in his starts (.600 win %).

Gregorius was originally signed by the Phillies as a free agent on Dec. 13, 2019. He played in 226 games for Philadelphia over parts of three seasons (2020-22) and combined to slash .230/.287/.384 with 24 home runs and 113 RBI in 877 plate appearances.
