Prior to today’s doubleheader against the New York Mets, the Phillies made the following roster moves:

  • Placed right-handed pitcher Dylan Covey on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to 9/28) with low back pain
  • Recalled right-handed pitcher Luis Ortiz from triple-A Lehigh Valley
  • Recalled infielder/outfielder Weston Wilson from Lehigh Valley
  • Optioned infielder Rodolfo Castro to the Spring Training complex

Phillies President of Baseball Operations David Dombrowski made the announcements.

Covey, 32, has made a career-high 29 appearances (1 start) with the Phillies (28) and Los Angeles Dodgers (1) this season.  In his 28 relief appearances, he has gone 1-2 with a 2.76 ERA (13 ER, 42.1 IP), 30 strikeouts and 17 walks.  Covey, who has not allowed a run in his last seven outings (8.0 IP), recorded his first hold of the season on Sept. 27 in his 100th major league game.  He was claimed off waivers by the Phillies from the Dodgers on May 20 and was originally selected by the Oakland Athletics in the fourth round of the 2013 MLB Draft.

Ortiz, 28, has a 3.50 ERA (7 ER, 18.0 IP) with 14 strikeouts, five walks and one save in 13 relief appearances across five stints with the Phillies this season.  He went 4-1 with Lehigh Valley in 2023, pitching to a 4.60 ERA (23 ER, 45.0 IP) with 45 strikeouts, 13 walks and five saves in 33 games (1 start).  Ortiz was selected in the first round (30th overall) of the 2014 MLB Draft by the Texas Rangers and was claimed off waivers by the Phillies from the San Francisco Giants on Nov. 9, 2022.

Wilson, 29, has played in five games for the Phillies this season and is 2-for-6 at the plate with three runs, a home run, and six walks to only one strikeout.  He has reached base safely in eight of his 12 plate appearances, posting a .667 OBP.  He made his major league debut on Aug. 9 against the Washington Nationals and became the fifth Phillie to homer in his first career plate appearance and first since Marlon Anderson on Sept. 8, 1998, against the Mets.

Wilson slashed .259/.363/.515 with an .878 OPS in 125 games for Lehigh Valley and he became the first player in IronPigs history with a 30 home run and 30 stolen base season.  The High Point, N.C., native was signed by the Phillies as a minor league free agent on Jan. 3, 2023 and attended Major League Spring Training as a non-roster invitee. He was originally selected by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 17th round of the 2016 MLB Draft.

Castro, 24, has played in 14 games for the Phillies since being acquired via trade from the Pittsburgh Pirates for left-handed pitcher Bailey Falter on Aug. 1.  He has started six games defensively for the Phillies which included three games at second base and three games at third base.  He was originally signed by Pittsburgh as an amateur free agent on Oct. 30, 2015.
