February 18, 2023 – CALGARY FLAMES [3] vs. NEW YORK RANGERS 2
The Flames welcomed the New York Rangers to the Scotiabank Saddledome for the first and only time this season. Goals came early and often for the Flames with Andrew Mangiapane busting through the defense and finishing with a backhand to give the Flames a 1-0 lead. Right after, Jonathan Huberdeau fed Nazem Kadri who one-timed home his 21st goal of the season and the Flames found themselves up 2-0 just 46 seconds into the game. Both goalies would shut the door until the 16:53 mark of the second when Vladimir Tarasenko cut the Flames lead in half, making the score 2-1 through 40. In the third, Alexis Lafrenière tied the contest midway through the frame, and the game remained knotted at two’s through regulation. In overtime, Jonathan Huberdeau fired a shot on goal and Mikael Backlund re-directed it past Jaroslav Halak, and the Flames prevailed 3-2.

This is the second of two matchups this season between the Flames and Flyers. These teams met in November with the Flames prevailing 5-2. This is a Pacific Division versus Metropolitan Division matchup; The Flames have an overall record of 7-4-4 against Metropolitan Division opponents this season and a record of 11-10-7 against Eastern Conference opponents.

LAST MEETING WITH THE Flyers:
The Calgary Flames met the Flyers during their season-long six game road swing earlier this season. Jonathan Huberdeau opened the scoring 4:43 into the first with his third of the season. Dillon Dube would also score in the first followed by Tanner Laczynski for the Flyers and the Flames skated into the break up 2-1. Rasmus Andersson would score the only goal of the second period, and it would hold up to be the game winner. Philadelphia would draw within one, but that’s as close as they would get as Jacob Markstrom and the Flames would shut the door and add a couple of emptynetters to prevail 5-2.

FLAMES ON FAMILY DAY:
The Flames get set for their second matinee game at the Saddledome this season as they take on the Philadelphia Flyers this afternoon. Calgary has won their last four Family Day contests, last season they beat the Jets on the holiday 3-1 thanks to a late go-ahead goal from Elias Lindholm. The year before they faced Vancouver during the COVID-shortened season and knocked off the Canucks 4-3 in overtime. In the 2019-20 season Andrew Mangiapane recorded his first career hat trick on Family day in a 6-4 comeback win against the Ducks and in 2018-19 Calgary beat Arizona 5-2.

AFTERNOON AFFAIRS:
Calgary gets set to skate in their seventh matinee game this afternoon, with a record of 4-2-0 so far in afternoon contests. In their most recent early tilt, Calgary matched a season-high with seven goals in a 7-2 victory over the Buffalo Sabres. The Flames have found a way to fill the back of the net in the afternoon with 26 goals in their six matinee outings so far on the campaign. Following this contests, the Flames will play in one more matinee game on March 25th against San Jose.
