NHL Preview: Carolina Hurricanes (45-15-8) at New York Rangers (41-19-10)

CAROLINA HURRICANES NOTES:

LAST GAME
The Hurricanes posted a 5-4 overtime win against the Philadelphia Flyers at Wells Fargo Center on Saturday. The Hurricanes trailed the Flyers in the final minute of regulation, but Martin Necas scored with 0.3 seconds remaining to force overtime. Sebastian Aho scored his third hat trick of the season, including his second overtime winner just 28 seconds into the extra frame. Brady Skjei also lit the lamp for the third straight game, and Brent Burns recorded an assist to set a new Hurricanes single-season record for points by a defenseman. Frederik Andersen made 29 saves in net.

HURRICANES vs. RANGERS SERIES NOTES
— Carolina is facing New York in the third of four meetings between the teams during the 2022-23 season. The Rangers travel to PNC Arena on 3/23.

— Carolina and New York are meeting for the 155th time in their regular-season histories. Carolina holds a 59-79-7-9 overall record, including a 22-47-4-5 road record.

— The Rangers lead the regular-season series 2-0-0 in 2022-23 (Hurricanes: 0-2-0).

— Carolina suffered a 5-3 loss at Madison Square Garden on 1/3. Paul Stastny tallied two assists, while Brent Burns, Jalen Chatfield and Martin Necas each scored for the Hurricanes. Pyotr Kochetkov made 26 saves in net.

— The Hurricanes fell to the Rangers, 6-2, at PNC Arena on 2/11. Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Teuvo Teravainen scored for Carolina, and Frederik Andersen made 13 saves in net.

— Derek Stepan was selected by the Rangers in the second round (51st overall) of the 2008 NHL Draft and registered 360 points (128g, 232a) in 515 NHL games with New York from 2010-17, serving as an alternate captain in each of his final three seasons with the team (2014-17). He also ranked tied for second on the team with 15 points (5g, 10a) in 24 games during the 2014 postseason as the Rangers advanced to the Stanley Cup Final.

— Brett Pesce is a native of Tarrytown, N.Y., about 30 miles north of New York City.

— Adam Fox was a Hurricanes prospect in 2018-19 but never skated with the organization. Acquired from CGY along with Dougie Hamilton and Michael Ferland in exchange for Noah Hanifin and Elias Lindholm on 6/23/18, Fox was traded to New York in exchange for a second-round pick in the 2019 NHL Draft (Mads Sogaard) and a third-round pick in the 2020 NHL Draft (Noel Gunler) on 4/30/19.

— Vincent Trocheck was acquired by Carolina from FLA in exchange for Erik Haula, Eetu Luostarinen, Chase Priskie and Lucas Wallmark on 2/24/20 and skated in 135 games with the Hurricanes from 2020-22, tallying 96 points (39g, 57a).

— Jack Drury is the nephew of Rangers President, General Manager and Alternate Governor Chris Drury. Jack was also born in New York City on 2/3/00 while his father, Ted, was playing for the Islanders.

RECAP/NOTES: In another shutout win, the Rangers scored six goals in the first period and tied the franchise mark for the most in an opening frame – a feat last accomplished on Dec. 15, 1999. The Rangers became the sixth team in NHL history to earned back to back shutouts while scoring six or more goals. In the first, K’Andre Miller became the first defenseman in Rangers history to record four points in a single period (2G-2A).

RANGERS RUNDOWN

  • The New York Rangers finish a season-long, five-game homestand with the first of two meetings this week against the Carolina Hurricanes (7:00 PM ET – TV: MSG Network – Radio: ESPN 98.7 FM).
  • With a win tonight, the Rangers will sweep a homestand of five-plus games for the second time in franchise history and first time since 1939-40 (5-0-0 from Dec. 19-31, 1939).
  • New York has now scored 15 unanswered goals dating to March 16 – tied for the second most in franchise history and the most in the NHL this season.
  • New York has points in seven-straight games (6-0-1) and wins in four-straight. It is their fourth separate point streak of seven plus games this year.
  • At home, the Blueshirts have won 10 of their last 12 games and are 13-4-0 in their last 17 home games.
  • Since December 5, New York is 30-9-5 for 65 points. In the NHL in that span, the Rangers rank tied for second in points, third in wins, points percentage (.739), and power play percentage (25.4), while also ranking fourth in goals per game (3.61).
  • The Blueshirts have scored 13 goals over their last two games and four or more goals in four-straight contests. New York has scored six goals in a game 13 times this season and five or more goals in a game 21 times this season. Both rank third in the NHL. When scoring four or more goals, New York is 28-0-0 and one of two teams in the NHL (VGK) to have a perfect such record.
  • The Blueshirts have won eight of their last 11 regular season games against the Hurricanes and have wins in nine out of their last 13 games against them. At home, New York is 18-3-0 in its last 21 contests against Carolina.
