TCU’s Davis Named a Preseason All-American

TCU’s Derius Davis has been named a preseason All-American at punt returner by Phil Steele’s College Football Preview.

Davis led the Big 12 and ranked fifth nationally last season in punt return average at 14.5 yards. He was one of only three players in the FBS with two punt returns for touchdowns, reaching the end zone from 67 and 37 yards against Baylor and Kansas, respectively. He is tied for second in TCU history with three career punt return TDs on just 17 attempts.

A senior from Saint Francisville, La., Davis placed fourth on the Horned Frogs in 2020 with 15 receptions and had a career game with six catches for 139 yards, including a 71-yard touchdown, in a 29-22 late-season win over No. 15 Oklahoma State.

A-State Football Names Baldus Special Teams Coordinator

Jonesboro, Ark – Arkansas State head football coach Butch Jones announced Thursday that Curt Baldus has been named the Red Wolves’ special teams coordinator.

Baldus comes to A-State after most recently spending the 2020 season as a special teams analyst at Florida State, but his extensive coaching experience also includes stops at Coastal Carolina (2013-19), Nebraska (2006, 2008-12), Buffalo (2007) and St. Cloud State (2002-04).  The 19-year coaching veteran has tutored six All-Americans, five NFL Draft selections, six additional NFL players and three national award semifinalists.

“Curt Baldus brings a wealth of experience to our staff, not only in terms of his ability to direct, teach and provide the motivation necessary to play championship-level special teams, but also in recruiting, knowledge of the Sun Belt Conference and the expertise to assist on the defensive side of the ball,” said Jones.  “We are excited to welcome Coach Baldus and his wife, Karoline, to the Arkansas State football family.”

During Baldus’ seven-year span working with special teams and defensive backs at Coastal Carolina, the Chanticleers won 56 games, made three consecutive NCAA playoff appearances and won back-to-back Big South championships prior to joining the Sun Belt Conference.

He personally worked with nine all-conference selections, and his athletes broke program records for longest field goal, most field goals made in a season, highest single-season field goal percentage, highest season punting average and longest punt.

Working as special teams coordinator in 2019, his final season at Coastal Carolina before joining the Florida State staff, the Chanticleers improved from 78th to 21st nationally in ESPN’s special teams efficiency ratings and ranked sixth nationally with a Sun Belt-best average of 15.2 yards per punt return.

Prior to his time in Conway, S.C., Baldus spent a total of six seasons at Nebraska in an offensive quality control position in 2006 before serving as a graduate assistant from 2008-12, working with wide receivers from 2008-10 and defensive line and special teams from 2011-12.  During his time with the Cornhuskers, the program collected four division titles and played in six bowl games.  The 2012 squad led the nation in pass defense.

In 2007, Baldus coached at Buffalo, working with the offensive line, kickers and punters.  The Bulls shared the Mid-American Conference East Division championship that season, claiming their first division title in program history.

Baldus began his career as a graduate assistant on offense at St. Cloud State from 2002-04.  The Huskies won 24 games over three seasons behind an offense that ranked 10th nationally in 2002 and ninth in the nation in 2003.

Baldus played defensive back, linebacker, punter and kicker at Gustavus Adolphus College.  He was an all-conference kicker and also was recognized on the academic all-district team.

Baldus earned his bachelor’s degree in both physical education and health fitness from Gustavus Adolphus College in 2002.  He completed a master’s degree in physical education and sport management from St. Cloud State in 2004 and earned a master’s degree in education administration from Nebraska in 2011.

Boston Recalls Infielder/Outfielder Michael Chavis from Triple-A Worcester

Boston, MA – The Boston Red Sox today placed infielder Christian Arroyo on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to June 21) with a right knee contusion. To fill Arroyo’s spot on the active major league roster, the Red Sox recalled infielder/outfielder Michael Chavis from Triple-A Worcester.

Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom made the announcement.

Arroyo, 25, was removed from Sunday’s game against the Kansas City Royals with a right shin bone bruise. The right-handed hitter has batted .264 (33-for-125) with four home runs and a .756 OPS in 41 games for the Red Sox this season, making each of his 33 starts at second base. Each of his four home runs has either tied the game or given the Red Sox a lead, including the club’s lone grand slam on June 16 against the Atlanta Braves.

Chavis, 25, has appeared in 11 games over three stints with Boston this season. He is 9-for-33 (.273) with one home run, four doubles, seven runs scored, and two RBI, making five starts at second base and two at first base. Chavis has played in 24 games with Worcester, batting .263 (25-for-95) with six home runs and an .801 OPS, with all six of his homers coming in the last 10 games. In 148 big league games (2019-21), he has hit .243 (128-for-526) with 24 home runs and 79 RBI.

Lions look for third-consecutive victory in seven-day stretch

Orlando, Fla. – Orlando City SC (5-1-3, 18 points) closes out a busy week of match play, set to play its third contest in seven days with a visit to Inter Miami CF (2-5-2, 8 points) on Friday, June 25. Kickoff is slated for 8 p.m. ET at DRV PNK Stadium.

The fixture will be nationally broadcast on FS1 and FOX Deportes, while being transmitted on 96.9 The Game in English and Acción 97.9FM, 810AM in Spanish.

“With this quick turnaround, we have to adjust as we did after Toronto and focus on the game in Miami. It’s a derby, it’s an important match for our franchise and our fans,” Head Coach Oscar Pareja said. “There’s the importance of the three points, but at the same time we know that this is a different game. We’re concentrating on the job and hopefully we can come up with a good result.”

Friday night will serve as the first fixture between the two Florida-based MLS clubs this season, with the two sides splitting the series a year ago at two victories apiece.

The Lions come into the contest after a resounding 5-0 victory over the San Jose Earthquakes on Tuesday. City jumped out to an early lead with Nani converting from the penalty spot in the seventh minute, followed by Benji Michel and Daryl Dike tallying their first finishes of the campaign before the break. The two would go on to each secure a brace in the second half, with Dike adding his second in the 49th minute and Michel closing out the scoring in the 90th minute.

Nani leads the side with five goals this season, followed by Tesho Akindele with three. Akindele sits tied for the team high in assists with Chris Mueller, each with four in the campaign.

Inter Miami returns to the pitch after dropping a 1-0 decision at D.C. United in its last outing. Ola Kamara scored the eventual game-winner in that match, converting from the penalty spot in the 72nd minute. Defender Ryan Shawcross and midfielder Gregore were both sent off in the match for Miami and will miss this Friday’s contest.

Gonzalo Higuaín leads the 2020 expansion side with four goals this year, the only member of the club with multiple finishes this season. Lewis Morgan leads the team with three assists.

Following Friday’s contest, the Lions will return home to host the New York Red Bulls on Saturday, July 3 at Exploria Stadium.

With 2-1 home win over Real Salt Lake, Sounders FC’s unbeaten start to season moves 10 matches

Raúl Ruidíaz bags his 50th career MLS goal, with Cristian Roldan also finding the scoresheet; Seattle continues home stand on Saturday, June 26 in Cascadia clash against Vancouver Whitecaps FC (6:00 p.m. PT / JOEtv, Prime Video, Univision-Seattle, 950 KJR AM, El Rey 1360 AM)

Seattle, Wash. – Continuing the club’s best-ever start to season, Seattle Sounders FC (7-0-3, 24 points) defeated Real Salt Lake (3-2-3, 12 points) at Lumen Field by a final score of 2-1, pushing the club’s unbeaten run to 10 games to begin the 2021 season. With the victory, Seattle becomes just the eighth team in MLS history to start a campaign unbeaten through 10 regular season matches. As Sounders FC continues to welcome more fans back into Lumen Field through the club’s evolving COVID-19 protocols, tonight’s crowd of 24,652 was the largest home attendance since March of 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic began.

Cristian Roldan broke the scoreless deadlock in the 58th minute for his second goal of the season. Raúl Ruidíaz fed Will Bruin for a shot inside the 18-yard-box that was saved, but Roldan pounced on the loose ball for an easy tap-in. The lead lasted approximately 20 minutes before RSL evened the score via penalty kick after Bobby Wood – making his RSL debut – drew a foul inside the area. Albert Rusnák converted the ensuing spot-kick to the left side of the net.

Ruidíaz scored the winner in the 88th minute via penalty, after an RSL defender was whistled for a handball inside the 18-yard-box. After a long run-up, the Peruvian scored fooled RSL goalkeeper David Ochoa with a Panenka-style shot right down the middle for his 50th career MLS goal for Sounders FC (including postseason play).

Seattle now prepares to conclude a three-match week with a pivotal Cascadia clash versus Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Saturday, June 26. Kickoff is slated for 6:00 p.m. PT at Lumen Field in the first matchup of the season between these sides in a rivalry that dates back to 1974 in the original North American Soccer League (JOEtv, Prime Video, Univision-Seattle, 950 KJR AM, El Rey 1360 AM).

MATCH NOTES

With the win, Seattle remains unbeaten in 2021. Through 10 matches, the club has seven wins and three draws, good for 24 points.

In addition to being the best start in club history to begin season, Seattle is just the eighth team in MLS history to go unbeaten through the first 10 matches of a season. Four clubs have started a season unbeaten through 12 games.

Following the win, Seattle remains atop both the Supporters’ Shield race and MLS Western Conference standings. The Rave Green lead the New England Revolution by one point for the top record in MLS, while also maintaining a four-point lead over Sporting Kansas City in the West.

Raúl Ruidíaz’s 88th-minute penalty kick was his 50th career MLS goal for the Rave Green (regular season and playoffs). Since joining Seattle midway through the 2018 season, the Peruvian has accomplished this feat in just 73 total games played. The only other player to hit 50 goals or more in MLS regular season and postseason play is Clint Dempsey (53 goals), while Fredy Montero holds the all competitions club scoring record (62 goals).

Ruidíaz’s second-half goal gives him eight strikes so far in 2021, tied with the Galaxy’s Javier Hernández for first in MLS.

With his goal in the 58th minute of play, Seattle midfielder Cristian Roldan notched his second strike of the season and 24th overall in his MLS career. Since being acquired by Sounders FC from the University of Washington in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft, Roldan has made 183 regular season appearances for the Rave Green, starting 166 of those games.

Starting in midfield for the eighth time in 2021, Kelyn Rowe made his 250th MLS regular-season appearance this evening. In a career dating back to 2012, Rowe has represented the New England Revolution (2012-2018; 2020) Real Salt Lake (2019) and Sounders FC (2021).

Following Saturday’s 2-1 victory in Los Angeles against the Galaxy, Head Coach Brian Schmetzer made just two changes to tonight’s starting lineup against RSL. Jimmy Medranda made his first start as a Sounder, replacing Brad Smith at left wingback. Will Bruin returned to the starting lineup for Fredy Montero.

Returning from a right quad strain, Josh Atencio made the bench for the first time since April 24 vs. LAFC. The Homegrown midfielder made a substitute appearance in the 85th minute, replacing Kelyn Rowe.

Despite conceding a penalty-kick goal tonight, Seattle still has not allowed a goal from the run of play in 2021. Of the league-best five goals the club has allowed, three have come from penalties and two have come from direct free kicks.

With two goals scored tonight and one conceded, Sounders FC maintains the best goal difference in MLS (+13). Orlando City is second in the league at +10.

Seattle now has 15 wins, 13 losses and six draws all-time versus RSL (both regular season and MLS Cup Playoffs). Sounders FC has claimed a win or a draw in five of the past six meetings against the Utah side (including a win in the 2019 MLS Cup Playoffs).

The Lumen Field crowd of 24,652 was the largest Sounders FC home attendance since March of 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic began.

Carlos Vela scores one and sets up another as LAFC claims 2-0 Home win over FC Dallas

0

The Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC) earned a 2-0 win over FC Dallas on Wednesday night in front of a sellout crowd at Banc of California Stadium. Carlos Vela gave LAFC the lead after just four minutes, and he provided the assist on Latif Blessing’s second half strike that clinched the three points for the home side. With the win, LAFC improves to 3-3-3 on the season for 12 points.

LAFC took the lead after just four minutes as Carlos Vela scored his first goal of the season. After playing a short pass to Eduard Atuesta, Vela made a run forward into the box and got the ball back from Atuesta before firing a left-footed shot into the net to give the home side a 1-0 lead.

Vela continued to threaten the Dallas goal, striking the post in the 12th minute, but it would take until the 69th minute for LAFC to increase their lead. Latif Blessing played a long ball forward for Vela on the left wing, and the Mexican international’s low cross was directed into the net by Blessing. The goal was originally called offside, but was given following video review, making the score 2-0.

Goalkeeper Tomas Romero made his MLS debut for LAFC, stopping the only shot on goal that he faced to earn a shutout, which was LAFC’s first since the season-opening win over Austin FC.

LAFC returns to action on Saturday, June 26 when it hits the road to face Sporting Kansas City. That game kicks off at 2:30 p.m. PT and will be broadcast nationally on ESPN and ESPN Deportes.

CHRIS ARMAS – HEAD COACH, TORONTO FC

  1. Looked like your team was offered a happy ending but things went south quickly. What happened do you think?

Listen, you felt the energy in the building, building. You know, we get the second goal, I think we give a second goal I think in the 84th minute so we are up 2-1, and we have to grind that out, right. We are all thinking of ways to help that out, fresh legs, try to bring — get more width to deny crosses. You’re a little bit in survival mode there and we didn’t get it done. So they make a push that does us in. So yeah, listen, got to grind it out. Got to find ways to manage that, grind it out, even if you give up a goal grind that point. So it’s disappointing to have the lead late and not walk away with the points.

  1. Can you tell us your vision to take Pozuelo out of the game in the first half, did he pick up a knock or was it a caution for so many games this week, the same for Osorio, I guess?

Both of them had tight hamstrings. They asked to come off, so you have to protect them. So the players know their bodies well and when we know information like that, we don’t tell them to suck it up, type thing. We say, okay, we’ve got to get him out. That’s what happened with both the players at those very moments. Those are guys you need. You could see moments in the first half you could control things a little more with the ball.

  1. Two games in a row now where you conceded late and let valuable points slip through your fingers. How frustrating is this to see you put in somewhat decent performances and you come away unrewarded both times?

You know, the players are putting a lot into it. You know, to put themselves — we are in a tough situation in many ways, and then in games, you’re on the road here, it’s tough, we score first, which is a big one, they get one, we battle back to get the corner kick goal. Of course it’s just frustrating. But we’ve taken a lot of hits. We’ve taken a lot on the chin here. And it’s demoralizing, I know, for the entire — for all of us. But it’s — we’re going to pick ourselves up and be ready for Saturday because that’s what we have to do. The strength is within our team and we’ll find the answers by being together, sticking together. We’re hitting our storm early in the year here. We’ll be stronger for it in the end but yeah, it’s frustrating. That’s the emotion. But disappointing to have the points and let it go.

  1. Obviously a tough loss, what’s the mood like in the locker room, how do you get the team ready for Cincinnati?

There’s not a lot — the locker room is quiet. It’s quiet. It hurts. You can see everyone, it’s hard to swallow, right. It just is. There’s a physical and emotional component to it that the guys are putting in a lot and we all know it feels close. Sometimes it’s far. It feels far. So just got to get that first one, that first victory and build some momentum. We will pick ourselves up. I said sometimes a quick turnaround is the best thing.

  1. I thought it was a good response from Quentin tonight.

I think he had a solid game and showed what he’s all about. It was never about repaying faith in him. I have that. I had that. I have that. That’s why we went back to him. We know what he’s about. I wasn’t here all along in these last years. I see the quality that he has. He kept us in the game. Even the other night, he kept us in the game with a couple of big saves and tonight he really kept us in the game. It’s a shame the points aren’t there for him after the performance.

  1. Is the frustrating compounded by the fact that the last few games, your team has done some really good stuff, some of the goals tonight were really beautiful. The first goal by Osorio with a did you meany run, but things can suddenly go south. Does that add to the frustrating when you seem to be so close?

Listen, we’re in the business of trying to win football games here. You know, it’s about results and of course then performance, so if the result doesn’t come yet, already you want to win ugly, but you have put together good stretches. That’s how much of a battle. You want it to add up to something, so at our club here, we want to win a certain way. We want to win by playing good football. We want to be able to defend in an organized way. We want to play with some intensity. We are getting ourselves fitter and yeah, do that for longer stretches and concentrate for longer periods of time. Even on longer goals tonight when you look back at it, we’re there. We’re there to make the play and they are trying, right. Just it’s not going our way and we have to make it happen.

Yeah, look, I’m not looking for things to make me feel better because nothing does. We want to win. That’s the first part. We’re going to take it a game at a time here and maybe some good stuff will add up and feel good about that.

  1. With the results not coming, does it give you pause for thought in terms of changing other tactics, personnel? Approach? Anything like that?

Listen, we are going to keep asking those questions. Our team has had a lot go against it. It has. We have another road game. Our guys, and zero complaining in our locker room, zero. Like nine for nine road games, right. It’s unprecedented. It difficult and our guys are sticking together. If you watch what we did to Orlando, it is right there. I’m not making that up. You can look at analytics, the one we don’t have is the victory, but I think that, yeah, tactically, substitutions, it’s all — it’s all part of it. So yeah, my job is to look hard at it and to find the solution because I know we have enough. I see the way the team — we don’t get blown away, I’m not sure. You probably have those stats you can share with people, right. I mean, every game is right there. So if it’s that close, it’s got to be percentages here and there and little ways. I think that we all can give more and we’re going to keep working to find that but we are asking those questions and I’m going to find a solution. The guys are running through the wall for me. They are running through the wall for me and it just to get knocked down but I’m going to help them get up and we are going to roll it out Saturday.

PATRICK MULLINS – FORWARD, TORONTO FC

  1. Nice goal tonight. You looked like you might pull off a win here with eight or nine minutes left but obviously gave up the two goals. Can you tell us what the mood in the locker room is right now after that loss?

Everyone wants more. We can feel we’re close to those moments when we’re getting into the last ten minutes of games and we have a chance to get a point or three points. That’s something everyone wants real bad in there.

  1. When you look at the last four games during this losing streak, there are common, I don’t know, themes or things that come up that have struck you that the team has to address going forward?

I think each day we come in and we look to get better at little areas. We recognize where we are in the season. And like I said, everyone in there is looking at themselves and looking at each other as a team and sticking together but also wanting to correct things to get points at the end of the day. We are putting ourselves in positions where we’re playing against quality teams and really putting them under pressure and creating chances and just making things very difficult for them. We’ve just got to find a way now to really tighten up a few little things to get us across the line.

  1. Do you relish the opportunity to get back on the field with the quick turnaround on Saturday and not a lot of time to think about this last one?

For sure, we are going to assess quickly this match, and take some positives from it, some great moments and obviously taking the lead a couple times in the match to quickly move on to the next game that’s coming very quickly here. Seems like all the games are coming pretty quickly.

  1. It’s got to be strange for you guys playing in a stadium like that, fans cheering on the opponent, jealous isn’t the right word but how much do you guys need some of that comfort in your lives right now?

You know, we’ve said all along we miss our fans. We feel them from afar. Can’t wait to see them. Nashville’s stadium and atmosphere here tonight is a very good atmosphere. You know, it’s something that as a footballer, you always want to play for your fans and really can’t wait to see ours again soon sometime hopefully.

  1. Following up, I know you guys don’t like excuses and you don’t make them, but just how old has this extended road trip become for you guys at this point with preseason Orlando and your own games in Orlando and not just getting any home games, is that just — how much has that worn the team down, would you say?

Everyone is abrasive with our situation and yes our situation is ours alone but there’s plenty of other teams. I’ve been on a team in the past — had had a lot stretch of away games and I believe Austin had a similar stretch of games this year before they moved into our new stadium. Our situation is ours and ours alone. We keep looking for ways to get better and tougher after this stretch of games to really hopefully to get on a run here going forward.

HOUSTON – Houston Dynamo FC remain unbeaten at BBVA Stadium after tonight’s 2-2 draw against Portland Timbers FC.

The Dynamo jumped to an early lead in the 15th minute after a scramble in the box following a corner kick from forward Tyler Pasher. The corner kick found forward Maxi Urruti at the far post and he forced a save from Timbers goalkeeper goalkeeper Aljaz Ivacic. Both defender Maynor Figueroa and forward Fafa Picault pounced on the ball with the Honduran defender getting the first touch and Picault heading the ball into the back of the net.
