MLS Preview: Sporting Kansas City (0-0-0) at Portland Timbers (0-0-0)

0

The Timbers have won three straight at home against Sporting Kansas City, including a 7-2 victory in Portland in May, when seven goals set a club record in MLS play and six second-half goals tied for the most in league history. The Timbers had only won two of their first 10 home matches against Sporting Kansas City, including playoff games.

With just 11 wins, the Timbers’ fewest in a full season since 2012, they ended their run of five consecutive postseason appearances. They also tied the club record for most goals conceded in a single season, which stood at 56, set in 2012.

Sporting Kansas City had the second-worst record in club history at that point in a season with just 20 points from their first 24 games last season (17 in 1999). However, Sporting Kansas City has won six of its last ten games (D2 L2), ranking fourth in the league with 20 points from August to the end of the season.

Last season, the Timbers scored 73.6 percent of their goals in the second half (39.53 percent), the highest percentage in the league. After halftime, top soccer player Dairon Asprilla scored eight of his ten goals in the 2022 season.

Even though he didn’t make his debut until the end of July, William Agada scored eight goals in Sporting Kansas City’s last ten games and finished as the club’s joint-leading scorer with Johnny Russell. From the beginning of August to the end of the regular season, Agada led only five players in goals scored.

McDavid, Ullmark and Gibson Named NHL ‘Three Stars’ of the Week

0

NEW YORK – Edmonton Oilers center Connor McDavid, Boston Bruins goaltender Linus Ullmark and Anaheim Ducks goaltender John Gibson have been named the NHL’s “Three Stars” for the week ending Feb. 26.

FIRST STAR – CONNOR McDAVID, C, EDMONTON OILERS

McDavid, who recorded multiple goals and points in all three of his appearances, led the NHL in goals (6), points (11), shots on goal (23), plus/minus (+7), power-play assists (t-3), power-play points (t-4) and shorthanded goals/points (2) to propel the Oilers (32-20-8, 72 points) to a 2-1-0 week. Down 2-1 entering the third period, McDavid posted 2‑1—3 (including his eighth game-winning goal of the season) to lift Edmonton to a 4-2 comeback victory over the Philadelphia Flyers Feb. 21. In doing so, he became the fifth-fastest and fifth-youngest player in NHL history to reach the 800-point milestone, achieving the feat in his 545th contest and at 26 years, 39 days, respectively. McDavid then registered 2-2—4 in each of his next to outings, a 7-2 triumph against the Pittsburgh Penguins Feb. 23 and a 6-5 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets Feb. 25. The latter performance gave him a League-best 48-65—113 through 60 total contests in 2022-23, the most by an NHL player through 60 games in a season since 1995-96 (Mario Lemieux: 57-79—136 w/ PIT). McDavid, who already has captured two straight and four overall Art Ross Trophies and is seeking his first Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy, also paces the League in goals (48), assists (65), power-play assists (37) and power-play points (54) this season.

SECOND STAR – LINUS ULLMARK, G, BOSTON BRUINS

Ullmark, who became the 13th different goaltender in NHL history – and first since Jan. 9, 2020 – to score a regular-season goal, went 2-0-0 with a 1.00 goals-against average and .966 save percentage to help the League-leading Bruins (45-8-5, 95 points) extend their winning streak to six games dating to Feb. 14. He yielded one goal in each of his two starts, making 30 saves in a 3-1 victory over the Ottawa Senators Feb. 20 and 26 stops (as well as scoring the first goal by a Boston netminder) in a 3-1 triumph against the Vancouver Canucks Feb. 25. Ullmark also capped the week with his League-best 30th win of the season (37 GP), making him the second-fastest goaltender in NHL history to reach the milestone behind only fellow Bruin Tiny Thompson in 1929-30 (35 GP). The 29-year-old Ullmark, who has earned 56 victories in two seasons with Boston (78 GP) after totaling 50 wins through his first six NHL campaigns (117 GP), also tops the League in goals-against average (1.86) and save percentage (.938) in 2022-23.

THIRD STAR – JOHN GIBSON, G, ANAHEIM DUCKS

Gibson (2-0-1, 2.64 GAA, .947 SV%) made a League-best 143 saves – highlighted by a pair of 51-save performances – across three contests to guide the Ducks (19-34-7, 45 points) to a 2-1-1 week. He turned aside 51 of 55 shots, including 22 of 23 in the third period, in a 4-3 overtime loss to the Florida Panthers Feb. 20. Gibson followed that with 41 saves on 43 shots, capped by a flawless 16-save final frame, in a 4-2 win over the Washington Capitals Feb. 23. He closed the week with another 51 stops, his third 50-save effort of February, in a 3-2 triumph against the No. 2 overall Carolina Hurricanes Feb. 25. The 29-year-old Gibson, who owns a 12-23-6 record in 41 total appearances this season (3.96 GAA, .902 SV%, 1 SO), paces the League 1,394 saves in 2022-23 – the most by an NHL goaltender through his first 41 games of a campaign since Jacques Plante in 1963-64 (1,442 SV w/ NYR).

NHL Morning Skate – Feb. 27, 2023

0

Sidney Crosby surpassed a fellow franchise legend with his 13th 70-point season as the Penguins recorded a six-goal second period en route to victory.

Dylan Cozens netted the first three-goal performance of his NHL career while Kirill Kaprizov became the fifth player in League history to complete a natural hat trick in overtime.

Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl are set to put goal streaks on the line when the Oilers face off against the League-leading Bruins on Monday.

PENGUINS POT SEVEN THANKS TO SIX-GOAL SECOND PERIOD
The Penguins were down 2-1 after 20 minutes but scored six straight goals in the second period en route to their 16th comeback win of the season, trailing only the Devils (21) and Maple Leafs (18) for the most in the NHL. Pittsburgh (29-21-9, 67 points) maintained its one-point lead over Buffalo (31-23-4, 66 points) for the final Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference.

* The Penguins’ six second-period goals marked their most in a single frame since Jan. 2, 2022 (6 in P1). Pittsburgh has only scored more goals in a period three times (8 in P2 on Dec. 17, 1991, 7 in P2 on Feb. 27, 1995 & 7 in P3 on Nov. 22, 1972).

Sidney Crosby, who factored on two of his team’s goals in the second frame (1-1—2), recorded his 13th career 70-point season (26-45—71 in 59 GP). The Penguins captain surpassed Alex Ovechkin (12x) for the most 70-point campaigns among active skaters as well as Mario Lemieux (12x) for the most in franchise history.

COZENS, KAPRIZOV EACH SCORE HAT TRICK IN VICTORIES

Dylan Cozens (3-1—4) and Kirill Kaprizov (3-0—3) each scored a hat trick Sunday to help the Sabres and Wild pick up wins at home:

* After reaching 100 career points with his first goal of the game and his teammate Tage Thompson netting his 40th goal of the season, Cozens tallied two more to record his first career hat trick. Cozens (22 years, 17 days) became the youngest player since Jack Eichel (21 years, 48 days on Dec. 15, 2017) to score three goals in a game for Buffalo.

* With Minnesota facing a two-goal deficit, Kaprizov scored his team’s next three goals including the overtime winner. He became the third player in Wild history to complete a hat trick in overtime, joining Joel Eriksson Ek (Oct. 19, 2021) and Mark Parrish (Dec. 9, 2006).

FOUR CLUBS KEEP PACE IN PLAYOFF RACE SUNDAY
The Rangers, Maple Leafs, Islanders and Predators each earned wins Sunday, with the former two clubs maintaining their playoff positions while the latter two kept pace in their respective Wild Card races:

Vincent Trochek scored twice in a span of 1:35 – the fastest two goals by a Rangers skater since Frank Vatrano on March 27, 2022 (0:18) – to help New York (34-17-9, 77 points) snap a four-game slide and move within six points of New Jersey (39-15-5, 83 points) for the second spot in the Metropolitan Division.

Mitchell Marner (0-3—3) factored on three of his team’s five goals as the Maple Leafs (37-15-8, 82 points) gained a four-point lead over the Lightning (37-18-4, 78 points) – Toronto’s 82 points are the most in franchise history through 60 games in a season, topping its previous best of 81 points (38-17-5) set in 2021-22. Marner boosted his totals over his past two games as a visitor to 0-8—8, eclipsing Gary Leeman (2-5—7 from Oct. 7-12, 1989) for the most points in Maple Leafs history through a span of two road games.

* Semyon Varlamov turned aside all 23 shots he faced while Brock Nelson scored one of four Islanders goals to help New York (31-25-7, 69 points) strengthen its grip over the first Wild Card spot. Varlamov recorded his 13th shutout with the Islanders and surpassed Jaroslav Halak (12) for sole possession of sixth place on the franchise’s all-time list.

Roman Josi (2-1—3), Matt Duchene (1-2—3) and Tommy Novak (1-2—3) each had three-point outings to help the Predators put up six goals for the second straight game. Nashville (29-22-6, 64 points), which has scored a League-leading 26 goals since Feb. 18, moved within six points of Seattle (32-31-6, 70 points) for the second Wild Card Spot in the Western Conference.

KUCHEROV HITS 700-POINT MARK IN #NHLSTATS: LIVE UPDATES
The latest edition of #NHLStats: Live Updates featured Nikita Kucherov hitting the 700-point milestone in his 621st career game. Kucherov became the fourth skater in Lightning history to reach the mark and required the fewest games among that cohort, besting teammate Steven Stamkos (696 GP).

* As the 2022-23 NHL Trade Deadline nears (3 p.m. ET on Friday, March 3), teams across the league continue to make moves, including the Devils who acquired Timo Meier from the Sharks on Sunday. Meier, who led San Jose in goals in 2022-23 (31-21—52 in 57 GP), recorded three 30-goal seasons with the franchise. Click here to read the #NHLStats Pack: 2022-23 NHL Trade Deadline Presented by OFX.

PLAYOFF PUSH CONTINUES AS TRADE DEADLINE APPROACHES

* Detroit is one of six clubs in the Eastern Conference that has occupied a Wild Card position since Feb. 16 as it vies for its first playoff berth since 2015-16.

* The reigning-champion Avalanche are one of seven teams in the Western Conference who trail the No. 1-ranked Golden Knights by six points or less. To date, the smallest end-of-season gap between first and eighth place in a conference is 10 points, seen in the 2007-08 Eastern Conference.

LEAGUE LEADERS SET TO CLASH IN EDMONTON

Two of the NHL’s most high-powered offenses will clash in Edmonton on Monday when the Oilers (230 GF; 1st) host the Bruins (217 GF; 3rd) in a contest that will feature both the League’s top team and top scorer. The contest will be carried on Sportsnet (East, Ontario & West), TVA Sports, NHL Network and NESN (8:30 p.m. ET).

* League-leading Boston (45-8-5, 95 points in 58 GP) sits five points back of 100 on the season and is on pace to become the fastest club in NHL history to hit the mark (currently 62 GP by the 1976-77 Canadiens). The Bruins own the NHL’s longest active winning streak (6-0-0 since Feb. 14) and can equal their longest run of 2022-23 (7-0-0 from Oct. 20-Nov. 3 and Nov. 7-21).

Connor McDavid (48-65—113 in 60 GP) is well past the 100-point mark and needs only 16 points to post the highest single-season total by any active player (currently 128 points by Nikita Kucherov in 2018-19). McDavid can become the second player in Oilers history to record a streak of four straight multi-goal games – only Wayne Gretzky (4 GP from Oct. 16-21, 1984) has done so to date.

Leon Draisaitl, meanwhile, can post the longest goal streak by an Oilers player in more than 37 years and become the fourth different skater to score in eight straight Edmonton games – only Dave LumleyJari Kurri and Gretzky (3x) have done so.

WBB-CS: Portland State Vikings (13-14) at Sacramento State Hornets (21-7)

The Sacramento State women’s basketball team rides a five-game winning streak into the final contest of the regular season on Monday (Feb. 27), as the Hornets host Portland State at The Nest. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m., with Sacramento State honoring its senior class 15 minutes prior.

BIG SKY BIG PICTURE: The Hornets currently sit in a tie for second place in the Big Sky Conference standing along with Northern Arizona at 12-5, trailing Montana State by a single game with one to play after the Bobcats claimed at least a share of the conference title on Saturday. Should Sacramento State and NAU end up tied in the standings at the end of Monday, the Lumberjacks will earn the higher seed at the Big Sky Tournament due to their series win over the Hornets. Sacramento State stands two games ahead of Eastern Washington, assuring the Hornets of a top-three seed no matter the outcome on Monday.

IN THE RANKINGS: After two weeks ranked among the top 25 in the College Insider mid-Major poll, Sacramento State slipped back into the ranks of those receiving votes for the sixth consecutive week (https://collegeinsider.com/womens-mid-major-top-25), picking up four votes according to the Feb. 21 poll… The Hornets made their debut in the top 25 back on Jan. 3 at No. 24, then jumped two spots to No. 22 in the Jan. 10 ranking… Those two rankings followed five consecutive weeks among those receiving votes beginning on Dec. 1… The No. 22 ranking on Jan. 10 was the highest for the program in the poll since they stood No. 22 on Feb. 11, 2014 — a season that saw them among the top 25 for eight consecutive weeks following an 8-1 start that year, reaching as high as No. 13 in early January.

NATABOU MAKES MID-MAJOR AWARD MIDSEASON CUT: Initially named as one of 25 players to the preseason watch list for the 2023 Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year Award presented by Her Hoop Stats back on Oct. 19, junior center Isnelle Natabou got word that she has made the midseason top-15 cut on Jan. 18. The first Big Sky Conference student-athlete ever to be named to the list for this particular award, Natabou is one of only four from the West Coast named to the list along with Gonzaga’s duo of Brynna Maxwell and Yvonne Ejim as well as Portland’s Alex Fowler. Read the complete release on HornetSports.com.

NATABOU NAMED TO BIG SKY’S PRESEASON TEAM: In addition to her national honor, Natabou was also named to the seven-member preseason all-conference team, joining Montana State’s Darian White (who was selected the MVP), Idaho’s Beyonce Bea, Montana’s Carmen Gfeller, Northern Colorado’s Hannah Simental, Montana State’s Kola Bad Bear, and Weber State’s Daryn Hickock. The native of the Czech Republic became only the third Hornet to earn preseason all-league honors in the process, joining former standouts Kennedy Nicholas (2019-20) and Brianna Burgos (2016-17).

BUT WAIT… THERE’S MORE!: The accolades continued to roll in for Natabou, who was also named the Big Sky’s Preseason Player of the Year according to ESPN.com, which made its picks for all 32 Division I conferences on Oct. 25.

HIGH FIVE FOR KAHLAIJAH DEAN: For the fifth time this season, senior guard Kahlaijah Dean has been named the Big Sky Player of the Week, sharing the league’s Feb. 21 honor with Montana State’s Kola Bad Bear. Dean averaged 24.0 ppg, 5.5 rpg, and 6.0 apg, while shooting 49 percent from the field in wins over Weber State and Idaho State. Read the complete release at HornetSports.com.

WHAT IS THE “JOUEUR DE LA SEMAINE?”: It’s the player of the week. That sounds good, we’ll have that. Thanks to Dean’s award on Feb. 21, a Hornet has now been named Big Sky Player of the Week eight times in the season’s 15 weeks (Natabou also took home honors on Nov. 29, Dec. 13, and Feb. 14, while Dean has won four other times on Nov. 22, Dec. 27, Jan. 10, and Jan. 24) — the most of any school in the league. The eight awards as a team this year are, by far, a school record, surpassing the 2012-13 squad, which won the award five times, for the most in a season since joining the Big Sky in 1996-97.

AND THE AWARD GOES TO…: Dean became the first Hornet to win Big Sky weekly honors more than twice in the same season, while her five career awards makes her one of only 10 Sacramento State players in the program’s Division I history to win multiple awards in her career. Dean’s five career wins matches current teammate Isnelle Natabou for the most in school history — a record Natabou held by herself for exactly one week after claiming her fifth career award on Feb. 14.

BIG (SKY) TIME: With one week remaining in the regular season, Dean’s five awards are the most by any one player in the conference this year — breaking a tie with Idaho’s Beyonce Bea — and the most by any Big Sky student-athlete during a single campaign since Montana’s Mandy Morales (2006-07) and Idaho State’s Natalie Doma (2007-08) claimed the honor a league-record six times in their respective years.

ABOUT THE VIKINGS: Portland State enters the regular season finale with a 13-14 overall record and an 8-9 mark in Big Sky play… The Vikings defeated Montana, 74-72, in overtime to start the week and then were smothered by Montana State, 63-34, on Saturday… PSU has lost three of its last four and is just 3-9 away from home this season… Sophomore guard Esmeralda Morales leads the team in scoring at 16.0 ppg, shooting .439 from the field and .429 from three-point range… Jada Lewis (11.3 ppg) and Alaya Fitzgerald (10.1 ppg) are also in double figures for the Vikings, while Rhema Ogele paces the squad on the glass at 5.6 rpg.

SERIES NOTES: Portland State leads the all-time series with Sacramento State by a 33-22 count dating back to 1992… However, the Hornets have won the last three meetings with the Vikings following a 65-56 win in the “Rose City” back on New Year’s Eve… Sacramento State is 11-16 at home against Portland State… The Hornets’ 73-62 triumph at The Nest last season on Feb. 5 snapped a five-game losing streak to the Vikings on their home floor… Four of the last six meetings have been decided by double-digits.

WIN-ACCLE OF SUCCESS: Two years removed from winning just three games, this year’s Hornets will go down in the record books as THE winningest team in school history. Sacramento State’s upset of league-leading Montana State (ending a 10-game winning streak by the Bobcats in the series) was its 20th of the season, giving the Hornet program it’s first-ever 20-win season and breaking a tie for the most wins in school history with the 1990-91 (19-7) and 2012-13 (19-12) squads.

EVERYTHING IS BIGGER IN BIG SKY PLAY: In addition to its overall win total, Saturday’s victory over Montana also gave the Hornets their 12th Big Sky triumph of the season and improved them to 12-5 in league play in 2022-23. The 12 wins surpasses last year’s conference win total when Sacramento State finished 10-10 in the Big Sky and gave the program double-digit wins in back-to-back seasons for the first time since doing so in four straight years from 2012-16. This year’s 12 conference wins are the most since the 2014-15 squad finished 13-5 in league.

MILESTONE APPROACHING: Sacramento State needs only one more win to reach 300 in the program’s Division I history.

TREASURE STATE SWEEP: Thanks to wins over both Montana State and Montana, the Hornets swept the Bobcats and Grizzlies at home for the first time since 2017-18.

WE’RE GOING STREAKING!: Riding a five-game winning streak entering the final regular season game, the Hornets are averaging 73.0 ppg while shooting .502 (128-for-255) from the field overall and .460 (58-for-126) from beyond the arc during their recent run. Meanwhile, the defense has limited opponents to just 58.2 ppg, a .381 (123-for-323) field goal percentage and .325 (27-for-83) from three-point range.

WE’RE GOING STREAKING (PART II)!: With their wins over Montana State and Montana, the Hornets have won their last five consecutive Big Sky Conference contests — a streak that is tied for the third-longest league winning streak in school history.

SAFE AT HOME: The Hornets have made winning at home a habit this season. Sacramento State improved to 10-2 at The Nest with its wins over Montana State and Montana — the most since the 2014-15 squad ended with an 11-3 record at The Nest.

ROAD WARRIORS: Thanks to wins at Weber State and Idaho State in their final road swing of the season, the Hornets posted their eighth and ninth road wins of the year, surpassing the 2009-10 Sacramento State squad (8-7) for the second-most victories away from home and trailing only the 1982-83 Hornets who finished 10-2 on the road.

EIGHTY (TWO) IS GREATY… AGAIN: The Hornets’ 82 points in the win over Montana State tied their season high for a second time after Sacramento State put up 82 at home against Eastern Washington on Jan. 7 and matched that mark with 82 in an overtime defeat to Northern Arizona on Feb. 9. The last time that the Hornets have eclipsed 80 points at least three times in the same season was back during the 2019-20 campaign when they accomplished the feat eight times.

RIDING THE HOT HAND: The league leaders in field goal percentage were up to their old tricks against Montana State last Thursday, shooting 52 percent from the field for game against the Bobcats. That performance marked the ninth time overall — and the fourth time in the previous five outings — that Sacramento State has shot 50 percent or better from the field. After shooting 46 percent from the field in the win over Montana, the Hornets are shooting .499 (190-for-381) in their last seven games.

THE EDGE OF SEVENTEEN: Just like the white winged dove, the shots from beyond the arc were flying through the air in the win over Montana State. Sacramento State drained 17 three-pointers against the Bobcats, shooting 55 percent from beyond the arc in the win — the highest since the Hornets hit 60 percent from distance at Northern Colorado on Feb. 10 last year. The 17 three-pointers were the most since Sacramento State finished with 21 in a 109-107 win at Illinois on Nov. 24, 2018.

IF A THREE FALLS IN THE ARENA…: Does it make a sound? The Hornets have been making a lot of noise from beyond the arc, draining double digits from three-point range in nine of their last 14 contests following their season high 17 three-pointers against Montana State and 10 more in a win over Montana two days later. Sacramento State is shooting .416 (144-for-346) from distance since hitting 12-of-22 from beyond the arc at Northern Colorado on Jan. 12.

NOTHING BUT NET: In addition to the above rankings, the Hornets also stand among the top 20 in the NCAA in both three-point percentage (No. 5) and field goal percentage (No. 14), while ranking No. 10 in three-pointers made per game (8.9) as of Feb. 25.

LET’S GO HALVSIES: In jumping out to an early lead against Montana State, Sacramento State’s 47-point first half against the Bobcats marked the 12th time this season that the Hornets have scored at least 40 points in a single half and is tied for the second-highest single-half scoring total of the year along with the 47-point first half at Montana on Jan. 26. Both totals are just one point shy of the season-high 48-point second half at Northern Colorado on Jan. 12.

With 50-plus saves for the third time this month (also Feb. 10 vs. PIT and Feb. 20 @ FLA), Gibson became the second goaltender since 1955-56 (since shots on goal began being tracked) to register three outings with 50-plus saves in a single month (also Gump Worsley: 52 on Jan. 23, 1963; 50 on Jan. 27, 1963; 50 on Jan. 30, 1963) and the third goaltender in NHL history with three 50-save outings in a single season (also Worsley and Al Rollins in 1955-56). Cam Fowler earned an assist, becoming the first defensemen and sixth skater in Anaheim Ducks history to record 400 career points (90-310=400). Troy Terry scored the game-winning goal at 12:01 of the third period, his second goal in as many games (2-0=2) since missing seven games due to injury. John Klingberg opened the scoring, netting his eighth goal of the campaign in addition to his third point the last two games (1-2=3) and eighth the last eight (2-6=8). Trevor Zegras (0-2=2) and Ryan Strome (0-2=2) each recorded assists on Anaheim’s first two goals. Zegras recorded his teamleading 30th and 31st assists, becoming the first player in Ducks history to record multiple 30-assist seasons prior to age 21 (38 assists in 2021-22). Jakob Silfverberg scored for the second straight game, posting two goals and a +5 rating in that span. Isac Lundestrom earned his 10th assist, marking points in consecutive games (1-1=2).
