MBB-FBS: Nevada Wolfpack (22-7) at Wyoming Cowboys (8-20)

The Nevada Men’s Basketball team will travel to Laramie, Wyoming, on Monday night in search of a third consecutive victory, following a hard-fought road victory over Fresno State by a score of 60-56 in which their defensive prowess was on full display.

Nevada would clinch a winning record in away games this year and earn its 23rd victory of the season if it beats the Cowboys on the road, as the Pack is currently 6-6 in true road contests.

Nevada is coming off a grueling victory at Fresno State, where they put on an outstanding defensive performance by holding the Bulldogs to pathetic shooting percentages of 37.5 percent from the field and 25.7 percent from behind the arc. This victory comes after Nevada’s previous one. In an outstanding defensive performance, the Pack forced Fresno State into 17 turnovers and recorded 12 steals, matching a season high.

Will Baker scored 13 points for the Pack on 5-10 field goal shooting in the contest.

Baker is ranked second in the Mountain West in field goal percentage (56.3%), fifth in free throw percentage (83.7%), and fourteenth in points per game (14.1 PPG) heading into the matchup on Monday night.

Baker has improved in Mountain West play this season, averaging 15.4 points per game on 58.7% field goal shooting and 41.2 percent from 3-point range. He also averages 5.2 boards per game against Mountain West opponents.

Kenan Blackshear’s versatility was fully displayed in yet another outstanding all-around performance against Fresno State. The senior went 4-7 from the field and 1-0 from behind the arc to score 11 points; while also racking up three steals, three rebounds, and a game-high six assists.

This season, the all-around point guard is still in the top 15 of the Mountain West in a number of individual statistical categories. Blackshear currently ranks third in the conference for assists per game (4.8 APG), sixth in steals per game (1.6 SPG), seventh in field goal percentage (46.5%), eleventh in points per game (14.6 PPG), twelveth in free throw percentage (779.9%), and twelveth in minutes played per game (32.4 MPG).

Blackshear is second on the team in total scoring this season with 422 points, and he is just nine points away from scoring 1,000 points in his career going into Monday’s game.

On Friday night against Fresno State, Nevada’s defense was led by junior forward Tré Coleman, who put together a sensational performance that included a career-high five steals in the first half alone. In addition, Coleman had one block. He has now recorded at least one steal in nine of the Pack’s last ten games and at least one block in nine of those games.

Throughout the season, Coleman has continued to climb the conference rankings; he currently ranks ninth in the Mountain West for blocked shots (27) and 11th for steals (33).

Friday’s victory over Fresno State was led by eight points from Jarod Lucas. Additionally, Lucas was second on the team with five rebounds, two assists, and one steal.

In a variety of statistical categories, the senior sharpshooter is still among the best in the conference. In the Mountain West, Lucas ranks second with 72 made 3-pointers, third with an 86.1% free throw percentage, sixth with 16.5 points per game, and sixth with 34.0 minutes per game.

Darrion Williams, a freshman, had another impressive performance against the Bulldogs. He scored 10 points on 4-10 shooting, grabbed a team-high eight rebounds, and had two steals. In 16 of Nevada’s 29 games this season, Williams has led the team in rebounding. Williams averages 7.2 boards per game, placing him first on the team and fourth overall in the Mountain West in terms of rebounds per game. Williams also has 1.5 steals per game, which puts him seventh in the league.

In Nevada’s victory over Fresno State, Hunter McIntosh, Nick Davidson, and Daniel Foster contributed a lot of points off the bench.

Six points and two crucial three-pointers were scored by McIntosh, who was only playing in his second game of the season after returning from an injury suffered in the preseason. In 13 minutes of play, he finished the game with a plus/minus of +4.

In 14 minutes of action, Davidson netted five points and had a plus/minus of +11, good for a game-high. while Foster grabbed four rebounds, three of which came from the offensive glass, in addition to scoring two points. Foster also had one steal, and in 16 minutes of action, the junior finished the game with a plus/minus of +9.

Nevada has remained at the top of the Mountain West in numerous defensive statistical categories as a team throughout the season. The Pack currently ranks second in their opponent’s field goal percentage (41.6 percent), fourth in their opponent’s points per game (65.9 PPG), fourth in their defensive rebounding (26.0 per game), fourth in their forced turnovers (371), fifth in their opponent’s 3-point field goal percentage (32.4 percent), and fifth in steals per game (6.2 SPG).

The Pack currently lead the league in free throw percentage (80.5%), points per game (72.5 PPG), field goal percentage (46.6%), assists per game (14.1), and 3-point field goal percentage (36.5%) during conference play.

Nevada is 6-6 in true road games this season, and they will play Wyoming, a team that has been much better at home than on the road this year. The Pack will be trying to get to 23-7 overall and 13-4 in Mountain West play this year. Nevada has a record of 6-6 in true road games this season.

Scouting Wyoming
Wyoming enters the matchup on Monday night with a record of 3-13 in Mountain West play and an overall record of 8-20.

The Cowboys have performed significantly better than on the road at the Arena-Auditorium, where they have won six of their eight games this season.

Hunter Maldonado, who was named to the 2021-22 First-Team All-Mountain West team, has led Wyoming. Maldonado is one of the conference’s most dangerous offensive players. He leads the league in scoring with 14.9 points per game, shoots 48.7% from the field, and shoots 32.3 percent from behind the arc in Monday’s game. Maldonado also has the most steals (1.4 SPG), rebounds (4.7 RPG), and assists (3.9 APG) on the team.

The Cowboys have benefited greatly from the contributions of Hunter Thompson, Jeremiah Oden, and Brendan Wenzel this season in addition to Maldonado.

NBA Preview: Orlando Magic (25-36) at New Orleans Pelicans (30-31)

0

In the Western Conference, the New Orleans Pelicans are vying for a play-in spot.

If the Orlando Magic are to secure a play-in spot in the Eastern Conference, they must catch up.

As they get ready to meet on Monday night in New Orleans, both teams are having trouble reaching the postseason.

Since the All-Star break, the 10th-place Pelicans have lost both of their games. In a 128-106 defeat on Saturday, New Orleans trailed the Knicks by 20 points in the first quarter after losing to Toronto by five points on Thursday.

New York made 13 of 26 3-point attempts in the first quarter, while New Orleans made 2 of 19.

Before returning for a three-game road trip, the Pelicans, who lost three of four on the trip, will play their first home game in 17 days. At home, New Orleans is 20-10.

After losing to 12th-place Indiana 121-108 at home on Saturday, the Magic are 13th in the East and four games out of the final play-in spot.

The Magic made just 20.7 percent of their 3-point attempts (6 of 29) and 38.9 percent of their field goals (35 of 90). With a 17-2 run to start the third quarter and a 68-54 lead, the Pacers took control.

Markelle Fultz scored 18, Mark Banchero scored 19, and Wagner scored 21 to lead Orlando.

Jamahl Mosley, the Magic’s head coach, agreed that the team allowed its offensive woes to hurt its defense.

Before heading back home, Orlando, which is 10-20 on the road, makes stops in Milwaukee on Wednesday and Charlotte on Friday.

When it comes to the Pelicans and the season series, the Magic want to win both games. On Jan. 20, Orlando defeated visiting New Orleans 35-19 in the fourth quarter to win 123-110. Wagner scored 30 points.

NBA Preview: Boston Celtics (44-17) at New York Knicks (35-27)

0

One of the earliest highlights of the New York Knicks’ season-saving surge was their victory over the Boston Celtics a month ago.

As the NBA’s best team enters yet another potentially pivotal stretch, the Celtics will host the Knicks on Monday night in a rematch of their long-standing rivalry. The Knicks will attempt to maintain their ascent into the playoff race for the Eastern Conference’s top spots.

After securing victories on Saturday night, both teams took Sunday off. In a thrilling back-and-forth contest, the Celtics defeated the visiting Philadelphia 76ers 110-107, while the Knicks defeated the visiting New Orleans Pelicans by a score of 128-106.

The Knicks won for the fifth time in a row, going 10-4 since January 24 to move up to sixth place in the Eastern Conference and the last playoff spot that is guaranteed.

New York was two and a half games ahead of the seventh-place Miami Heat, half a game behind the fifth-place Brooklyn Nets, and two and a half games behind the fourth-place Cleveland Cavaliers when the game started on Sunday. Home-court advantage in the playoffs’ first round will go to the top four teams.

The Knicks have won four of the five teams in front of them in the East, including the Celtics, who New York beat 120-117 in overtime on the road on January 26.

The Knicks will play the Celtics twice, the Nets twice, and the Heat once over the course of this week’s four games. The two teams are scheduled to play again next Sunday at Boston.

Since their loss to the Knicks, the Celtics, who are the defending champions of the Eastern Conference, have gone 9-2, giving them another taste of the intensity of the postseason. They are still ahead of the pack in the race for the No. 1 spot thanks to the run. 1 seed.

On Sunday, Boston was one game ahead of the Milwaukee Bucks, who were in second place, and four games ahead of the Philadelphia 76ers, who were in third place.

The Celtics fell behind 67-52 early in the third quarter Saturday against the 76ers before mounting a 45-20 run to take a 97-87 lead midway through the fourth after squandering a 10-point halftime lead and defeating the Indiana Pacers 142-138 in overtime on Thursday night.

The Celtics’ Jayson Tatum scored the game-winning 26-footer with 1.3 seconds remaining after the 76ers stormed back. After that, Philadelphia superstar Joel Embiid hit a 75-footer that could have tied the game, but the ball didn’t leave his hand before the buzzer.

NBA Preview: Miami Heat (32-29) at Philadelphia Sixers (39-20)

0

Throughout the remainder of the regular season, the Philadelphia 76ers’ schedule will continue to be difficult to navigate.

Additionally, the Sixers must quickly respond to their agonizing 110-107 defeat to the Boston Celtics on Saturday by hosting the Miami Heat on Monday at home.

With 1.3 seconds remaining, Boston’s Jayson Tatum made the game-winning three-pointer. After that, Philadelphia’s Joel Embiid hit a shot from 75 yards out that went through the net, but the ball remained in his hands as time expired.

Another MVP-like performance from Embiid, who scored 41 points and had 12 rebounds and five assists, was overshadowed by the loss. Additionally, he stopped three shots.

This season, Embiid has had five games with at least 40-10-5 points, which is the most he has ever had in a single season and tied for second in the NBA.

He wants to win at this point in his career. Since joining the NBA, he has never made it past the Eastern Conference semifinals. However, he has sufficient big-game experience to anticipate double teams, particularly in the postseason.

The Sixers are likely to benefit from the challenging schedule because they will have to fine-tune the minute details that will ultimately decide games in the playoffs.

Before the All-Star break, the Heat suffered defeats to the Brooklyn Nets and Denver Nuggets.

After the break, Miami has suffered defeats at the hands of the Milwaukee Bucks and the Charlotte Hornets, continuing its conflict.

Despite Tyler Herro’s 33 points, six 3-pointers, and Jimmy Butler’s 28 points, the Heat lost to the Hornets 108-103 on Saturday. Kevin Love, a new signing, had 13 points and 13 rebounds.

The Heat trailed by 22 points but rallied ferociously in the final two minutes to pull within one. On their final four possessions, they failed to score.

A team that had hopes of making deep playoff runs suffered yet another defeat as a result. This was a frustrating stretch of losses.

Kyle Lowry of the Heat remained sidelined with a sore left knee. Lowry hasn’t played since Feb. 2 against the New York Knicks, and whether he will play against the Sixers is unknown.

NBA Preview: Detroit Pistons (15-46) at Charlotte Hornets (19-43)

0

With a four-game winning streak going into Monday night’s game against the Detroit Pistons, the Charlotte Hornets are one of the best teams in the NBA.

With the Pistons being the only Eastern Conference team with a worse record than Charlotte, the Hornets will test the role as favorite for Monday’s game, as only two teams had longer winning streaks going into Sunday.

Despite their four-game losing streak, the Pistons will face the Hornets for a portion of their rare success this season.

The Hornets returned to action after winning their final two games before the All-Star break, defeating the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday night on the road and the Miami Heat on Saturday night at home, respectively.

The Hornets have benefited from Oubre’s return to action after he suffered a hand injury that sidelined him for nearly two months of the season. Since Mason Plumlee was traded to the Los Angeles Clippers, rookie center Mark Williams has continued to rise to prominence.

Williams scored 18 points and grabbed 20 rebounds, both career highs, against the Heat. Since Alonzo Mourning in 1993, no Charlotte rookie had scored at least 15 points and grabbed 20 rebounds in a game.

LaMelo Ball, Williams’ point guard, has been working well together.

The Toronto Raptors and Orlando Magic have both defeated Detroit by six points in consecutive games.

Marvin Bagley III, who hasn’t played since Jan. 2 because of a hand injury, could give the Pistons a boost of energy on Saturday. In the Toronto game, he scored 21 points and grabbed a career-high 18 rebounds.

In February, the Pistons have only won two games. The first of those was a home victory over the Hornets on February 3 by a score of 118-112. Jaden Ivey scored 24 points, but that was only the second time in his last 14 games that the rookie guard has scored 20 points.

On December 14, Detroit also prevailed against Charlotte, winning 141-134 in overtime. In that game, Bagley only played ten minutes.
