NBA Preview: Charlotte Hornets (9-24) at Golden State Warriors (16-18)

0

Two of the NBA’s highest-scoring young point guards go head to head Tuesday night when LaMelo Ball and the Charlotte Hornets visit Jordan Poole and the Golden State Warriors in San Francisco.

Ball, 21, averages 23.7 points per game, while Poole, 23, puts up 19.4 per contest.

Ball is coming off a 27-point performance in the Hornets’ 124-113 road loss to the Portland Trail Blazers on Monday night. That brought his average up to 25.6 points in the seven games since his return from an 11-game absence caused by a sprained left ankle that occurred when he stepped on a fan’s foot.

The Hornets have gone just 2-5 in those seven games, but the two wins came in their past four outings, when they prevailed 125-119 at Sacramento on Dec. 19 and 134-130 against the host Los Angeles Lakers on Friday.

The stop in San Francisco wraps up a six-game trip.

With Ball and Terry Rozier back from injuries, Hornets coach Steve Clifford was able to start his preferred lineup of Gordon Hayward, P.J. Washington, Mason Plumlee, Ball and Rozier in the Lakers game.

It also marked the first time this season that the group finished a game. That occurred for a second time Monday in Portland.

Hayward admitted it’s going to take time for the unit to jell.

The Warriors have figured that out, especially in their home games. They share the best home record in the league at 13-2 with the Memphis Grizzlies. The Warriors average a league-best 29.4 assists per game, and the number rises to 30.7 in San Francisco.

Golden State logged 31 assists in a 123-109 home win over the Grizzlies on Christmas. Poole went for 32 points, while Draymond Green ran the offensive show in Stephen Curry’s absence, dishing out 13 assists in addition to grabbing 13 rebounds.

Curry has missed the past five games, during which Poole has averaged 28.6 points.

Curry is expected to be out at least another two weeks because of a slightly dislocated left shoulder. In addition, Andrew Wiggins (strained adductor) will miss his 11th consecutive game on Tuesday.

With the Christmas contest having started an eight-game Warriors homestand and Wiggins expected back at some point this week, Golden State coach Steve Kerr challenged his club to find some consistency before Curry returns.

The clubs met in Charlotte on Oct. 29, with Washington’s 31 points helping propel the Hornets to a 120-113 overtime victory.

NBA Preview: New York Knicks (18-16) at Dallas Mavericks (18-16)

0

The New York Knicks will try to pull out of a slump when they begin a tour through Texas on Tuesday, visiting a Dallas Mavericks team on a three-game winning streak.

Both New York and Dallas appeared in Christmas Day showcase games, with the Knicks’ current losing skid extending to three games in a 119-112 decision against Philadelphia and the Mavericks picking up their third straight win, 124-115 over the Los Angeles Lakers.

Dallas overwhelmed Los Angeles on Sunday with Luka Doncic totaling 32 points, nine rebounds and nine assists, and Christian Wood adding 30 points, eight rebounds and four steals.

The duo contributed to a 51-point third quarter, which marked the highest-scoring period of this NBA season.

While the Dallas offense primarily operates through Doncic, who ranks second in the NBA at 32.8 points per game, Sunday’s win followed a much different trajectory than the Mavericks’ 112-106 win at Houston on Friday.

Doncic scored 50 points, while no other Mavericks player scored more than 11. Against the Lakers, Wood’s production and Tim Hardaway Jr.’s 26 points — which included 6-of-14 shooting from beyond the 3-point arc — demonstrated Dallas’ capacity for a more balanced attack without sacrificing Doncic’s scoring punch.

New York sees each of the NBA’s top two scorers in consecutive contests with Tuesday’s visit to Dallas, as the Knicks draw Doncic just two days after surrendering 35 points to league-leading scorer Joel Embiid.

Embiid’s effort, along with 29 points from James Harden, doomed New York to a third straight loss after the Knicks had been the league’s hottest team for more than two weeks.

New York won eight straight from Dec. 4-20 but gave up 52 points to Pascal Siakam in a 113-106 loss to Toronto on Wednesday. The Knicks surrendered a game-winning jumper to DeMar DeRozan — after Jalen Brunson missed two potential game-sealing free throws — on Friday in a 118-117 loss to Chicago, then fell on Sunday.

The Knicks’ last loss preceding their winning streak came on Dec. 3, a 121-100 setback against this same Dallas bunch. New York gave up 30 points to Doncic and 28 to former Knick Hardaway in the loss.

Hardaway was part of a trade to the Mavericks in 2019.

Two of the Knicks’ three offensive leaders — RJ Barrett and Brunson, a former Maverick — struggled to 13 points apiece in the last meeting with Dallas. Brunson’s status for a return to Dallas, the first of three straight games for New York against the NBA’s Texas franchises, is uncertain.

Brunson left Sunday’s loss early in the fourth quarter with a hip injury, according to the team, which on Monday listed him as questionable for Tuesday’s game.

NBA Preview: San Antonio Spurs (11-22) at Oklahoma City Thunder (14-19)

0

The Oklahoma City Thunder will look to restart their late-December recovery when they play host to the San Antonio Spurs on Tuesday.

The Thunder were closing in Friday on a fourth consecutive victory, which would have matched their season high, when they blew a nine-point, fourth-quarter lead and dropped a 128-125 overtime decision against the visiting New Orleans Pelicans.

Oklahoma City’s run of better play actually began before the recent three-game winning streak kicked off on Dec. 17. The Thunder absorbed one-possession defeats to the Minnesota Timberwolves and Miami Heat in the two games before the victories began.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander continues to step up his game for Oklahoma City. He is averaging 32.7 points over 10 games this month, just a tick over his 31.6-point season average.

In the Friday loss to the Pelicans, Gilgeous-Alexander scored a season-high 44 points. It was his third game this season with at least 40 points, two of them coming in his past six contests.

Tuesday’s game will conclude Oklahoma City’s seven-game homestand, the longest in franchise history. The Thunder, who are 3-3 on the homestand, will head out for a game at Charlotte on Thursday, then return home for a pair of games wrapped around New Year’s Day.

The Spurs will be playing on the second night of a back-to-back after earning a 126-122 home victory against the Utah Jazz on Monday. Devin Vassell scored 24 points and Keldon Johnson added 21 for San Antonio, which led by 20 points late in the third quarter then held on late for the win.

The Spurs have won two of their past six games and are 5-4 going back to Dec. 8. San Antonio shot 55.2 percent from the field on Monday as the team continues to look much improved from a stretch in which it lost 16 of 17 games from Nov. 2-Dec. 4.

The Tuesday game will be the second of three meetings between the teams this season. The Thunder won 119-111 in Oklahoma City on Nov. 30. The sides also will square off in San Antonio on March 12.

NBA Preview: Los Angeles Clippers (20-15) at Toronto Raptors (15-18)

0

Kawhi Leonard and Norman Powell will return to oppose the team they helped win the 2019 NBA championship when the Los Angeles Clippers visit the Toronto Raptors on Tuesday.

Leonard was the NBA Finals MVP and Powell also played a key role when the Raptors won their lone championship.

After that season, Leonard departed as a free agent. Powell was traded to the Portland Trail Blazers for Gary Trent Jr. and Rodney Hood on March 25, 2021.

Leonard (right knee injury management) did not play, and Powell scored 16 points for the Clippers on Monday in their 142-131 overtime victory over the host Detroit Pistons.

Leonard, who has not been playing both ends of back-to-back games, appears likely to play Tuesday.

If he plays, Leonard would appear in a game at Toronto for the third time since he was with the Raptors. He scored 23 points in a Los Angeles win on Dec. 11, 2019, and he had 20 in a Clippers victory on May 11, 2021.

Powell has played at Toronto once since leaving the Raptors. He scored 13 points as the Blazers prevailed on March 28, 2021 — just days after Toronto traded him.

The Clippers have split the first two games of a five-game road trip thanks to a huge comeback at Detroit.

The Raptors will be playing for the first time since they defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers 118-107 on Friday to complete a 2-1 road trip.

After losing six straight, Toronto has won two in a row, ending the New York Knicks’ eight-game winning streak and the Cavaliers’ five-game winning streak.

Pascal Siakam played a large role in the victories. After scoring 38 points in an overtime loss to the Philadelphia 76ers to open the trip, he posted a career-best 52 points against New York and added 26 points against the Cavaliers. Siakam was named the Eastern Conference Player of the Week.

In his one season in Toronto, Leonard showed Siakam how to stay on an even keel.

Siakam said earlier this year of Leonard, “Nothing really fazed him. He was just focused on his goal, and his goal was winning. It didn’t matter if he shot bad or whatever, or had a good game, he had the same mentality.”

Siakam showed another aspect of his game against the Cavaliers when he had nine assists.

The Clippers’ victory in Detroit was a roller-coaster game. The Clippers led by 15 points in the third quarter and then trailed by 14 points with three minutes to play in regulation before tying the game at 128 to force overtime.

Los Angeles’ Paul George scored seven of his 32 points in overtime.

Clippers coach Tyronn Lue removed his starters when his team trailed 126-112 with 3:34 to go. A group that included Luke Kennard, Terance Mann, Amir Coffey, Nicolas Batum and Moses Brown started the rally. Mann’s jumper tied the game with five seconds left in regulation.

George and Powell returned to the floor with 26 seconds left in regulation.

NBA Preview: Atlanta Hawk (17-16) at Indiana Pacers (17-17)

0

Pacers hope to shake string of losses to Hawks

The Indiana Pacers look to get back on the winning track when they return to Indianapolis for a four-game homestand that begins Tuesday against the Atlanta Hawks.

This is the first of three meetings between the two teams this season. The Hawks swept all four games against the Pacers in 2021-22, marking their first four-game regular-season sweep over Indiana since the 2005-06 season. In their four wins last season, the Hawks averaged 127.5 points on 54.6 percent shooting.

The Pacers are coming off a 113-93 loss at New Orleans on Monday. Indianapolis scored just 38 points in the first half and never got back into the game. Their two-game winning streak came to an end. The Pacers are 5-1 in the second game of back-to-backs.

Indiana’s Tyrese Haliburton, who had totaled 76 points in the last two games, scored only 12 points on Monday. Haliburton was coming off a career-best effort in Friday’s 111-108 win at Miami. He scored 43 points and set a new franchise record by making 10 3-pointers. Haliburton made the winning 3-pointer with 4.3 seconds remaining.

Aaron Nesmith had his first career double-double on Dec. 18 against New York with 23 points and 10 rebounds. He has scored in double figures in six of the last seven games.

Atlanta is coming off a 130-105 win over the Detroit Pistons on Friday. The 25-point margin of victory was its largest of the season and the most since a 27-point win over the Toronto Raptors on Feb. 26, 2022. In the second half, Atlanta outscored the Pistons 70-42 for its largest positive point differential after intermission and the largest since May 5, 2021, against the Phoenix Suns.

Over the last four games, the Hawks are 3-1 and are averaging 122.3 points and 26.5 assists on 50.3 percent shooting, 40.2 percent on 3-pointers and 87.2 percent at the line. The Brooklyn Nets are the only other team to match those numbers since Dec. 16.

Trae Young leads the Hawks with 27.5 points and 9.9 assists. In his last game, Young had 26 points, 13 assists and only one turnover. That broke a stretch of three consecutive 30-plus point games. He averaged 32.3 points and 10.7 assists in Atlanta’s three games last week.

The Hawks fielded their complete lineup for the first time all season against Detroit when center Clint Capela returned.

NBA Preview: Houston Rockets (10-23) at Boston Celtics (24-10)

0

Battle-tested Celtics now turn attention to Rockets

The Boston Celtics passed a big Christmas Day test to reclaim the best record in the entire NBA.

After scoring 139 points in Sunday’s win over Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks, the Celtics will host the Houston Rockets on Tuesday night in search of their third consecutive victory.

Jayson Tatum scored 41 points on 14-of-22 shooting to lead the Celtics against Milwaukee. One second-quarter hoop stood out, as Tatum took one of Marcus Smart’s eight assists and slammed a dunk over the Bucks’ Greek superstar.

That basket seemed to be a microcosm of the entire game, as the Celtics strung together multiple wins for the first time since a three-game streak from Dec. 5-7. They had previously lost five of six.

Jaylen Brown led the way late, scoring 13 of his 29 points in the fourth quarter.

Tatum dropped 20 points in the third and finished with the second-highest Christmas scoring effort in franchise history as the Celtics blew open what was a one-point game at halftime.

It was the eighth career game Brown and Tatum combined for at least 70 points.

The Celtics not only got back to their early-season offensive ways — shooting 58.8 percent and banging in 19 3-pointers — but they also allowed just eight offensive rebounds and nine second-chance points.

The Celtics opened their current seven-game homestand with two losses to Orlando, which had just five wins before going 8-1 in its last nine.

Boston looks to avoid a similar result against the Rockets, who are alone in the Western Conference cellar, but broke a five-game skid with Monday’s 133-118 win at Chicago.

Tuesday marks Houston’s second game on a three-game road trip. The Rockets will visit Dallas Thursday for a rematch of Friday’s game in which Mavericks star Luka Doncic scored 50 points.

Against the Bulls, Kevin Porter Jr. led Houston with a season-high 36 points on six 3-pointers while adding seven rebounds and nine assists.

Alperen Sengun posted 25 points and 11 rebounds for his second double-double in a three-game span. He added six assists, two blocks and one steal to help beat Chicago.

Eric Gordon scored 12 points after missing the previous game with a bruised left thumb.

The Celtics and Rockets have not met since November of 2021. Boston has won four straight head-to-head games.

NBA Preview: Phoenix Suns (19-15) at Memphis Grizzlies (20-12)

0

After an unsuccessful four-game Western trek concluded with a loss at Golden State, the Memphis Grizzlies will host the Phoenix Suns on Tuesday night, looking to extend their home winning streak to eight games.

Despite 36 points, eight assists and seven rebounds from Ja Morant in the 123-109 loss to the Warriors on Sunday, Memphis went 1-3 on its four-game trip and fell to 7-10 away from home.

The Grizzlies’ starters went 4-for-25 from 3-point range and failed to contain Golden State guards Jordan Poole, Klay Thompson and Donte DiVincenzo, who combined for 75 points with Stephen Curry out indefinitely with a shoulder injury.

Memphis is tied with Golden State for the best home record in the Western Conference at 13-2. The Grizzlies’ most recent defeat on their home court came against the Sacramento Kings, 113-109, on Nov. 22 — with Desmond Bane sidelined due to a toe injury and Morant coming off an ankle injury.

Since his return to the starting lineup in a 125-100 win over Phoenix on Friday after a 17-game absence, Bane is averaging 24 minutes per game along with 13 points and three rebounds.

The only game Memphis won on its latest trip was the blowout of the Suns. Bane was one of six Grizzlies to score in double figures vs. Phoenix.

Morant has two triple-doubles in his past three home games and is averaging 26.8 points, 7.9 assists and 6.4 rebounds this season.

Dillon Brooks (17.8 ppg), Jaren Jackson (16.6 ppg, six rebounds and 3.1 blocks per game) and Steven Adams (10.3 rpg) round out a talented starting five that can score at will when they play well.

Phoenix has lost three straight games with leading scorer Devin Booker mostly sidelined with a groin injury.

The Suns almost slid past Denver on Christmas Day, but the Nuggets rallied for a 128-125 overtime victory behind Nikola Jokic, who had 41 points, 15 rebounds and 15 assists for the 83rd triple-double of his career.

Booker played four minutes and scored two points but exited early after he reinjured his groin.

Chris Paul had 17 points and 16 assists for the Suns. Deandre Ayton added 22 points and 16 rebounds.

Landry Shamet, who had 31 points and six assists in the loss to the Nuggets, has emerged as a legitimate weapon in the absence of Booker. Over his past four games, Shamet has averaged 22.5 points for a Phoenix team that’s lost eight of its past 11 games.

NBA Preview: Philadelphia Sixers (20-12) at Washington Wizards (13-21)

0

The Philadelphia 76ers will look to continue their winning ways — and get a valuable player back in the process — on Tuesday night when they visit the Washington Wizards.

The 76ers are riding high after extending their winning streak to eight games with a 119-112 victory over the Knicks in New York on Sunday.

Philadelphia received quite the Christmas gift after overcoming a double-digit deficit in the first half for the second straight game. The 76ers trailed by 20 points in the first half on Friday before storming back for a 119-114 home win over the Los Angeles Clippers.

What’s also good for your team is having Joel Embiid and James Harden playing like elite talents. In Sunday’s opener of a four-game trip, Embiid had 35 points and eight rebounds, while Harden contributed 29 points, 13 assists and four steals.

Harden joined De’Anthony Melton in making five 3-pointers, and Georges Niang knocked down four for the 76ers, who shot a robust 46.2 percent from beyond the arc (18 of 39) against the Knicks.

Philadelphia also is looking forward to the return of Tyrese Maxey on Tuesday. Rivers said the 22-year-old was close to coming back from his left-foot fracture on Friday, and he accompanied the team to New York on Sunday.

Multiple reports on Monday indicated Maxey indeed would return after missing 17 games because of the injury he sustained against the Milwaukee Bucks on Nov. 18. He is averaging 22.9 points, 4.4 assists and 3.5 rebounds in 15 games.

Maxey scored 28 and 32 points, respectively, as Philadelphia split a home-and-home series with Washington on Oct. 31 and Nov. 2.

Wizards star Kristaps Porzingis scored 32 points against the 76ers in a 118-111 home loss in the first contest. He followed that with 30 in the 121-111 victory in Philadelphia in the rematch.

Porzingis struggled mightily with his shot in Washington’s last game, however. He made just 2 of 11 attempts from the floor and misfired on all three of his shots from beyond the arc in the Wizards’ 125-111 victory over the Kings in Sacramento on Friday.

Kyle Kuzma more than picked up the slack, making 14 of 23 shots from the floor to finish with 32 points. He added nine rebounds and five assists, marking his fourth game of his career — and second of the season — in which he collected at least 30 points, five boards and five assists.

Bradley Beal finished with 24 points, marking the 15th time in his last 16 games played that he has scored at least 20.

The Wizards could welcome back Deni Avdija and Will Barton on Tuesday. Both players are dealing with lower-back soreness.

The 76ers on Monday signed forward Louis King to a two-way contract and waived guard Saben Lee. King was averaging 20.1 points and 4.4 rebounds a game in the G-League while Lee played in two games for the Sixers, averaging 3 points.

NBA Preview: Los Angeles Lakers (13-20) at Orlando Magic (13-21)

0

Two teams trending in opposite directions will meet when the Orlando Magic host the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday night.

While Orlando has won eight of its last nine, Los Angeles has lost four in a row. The Lakers began a five-game trip with a 124-115 loss to the Dallas Mavericks on Sunday.

After taking a nine-point lead into halftime, Los Angeles was outscored 51-21 during a disastrous third quarter.

Lakers star LeBron James scored 38 points in the loss. His seven-game streak of at least 30 points is the longest active streak in the league.

Los Angeles is being forced to rely on James minus center Anthony Davis, who is out indefinitely with a stress injury in his right foot.

The Lakers are 1-4 since Davis’ injury and have allowed at least 124 points in all four losses.

James likely will need another big showing against Orlando, which opened a brief two-game homestand with a 133-113 win over the San Antonio Spurs on Friday.

Third-year point guard Cole Anthony continued to impress, with 23 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists against the Spurs.

Franz Wagner added 21 points, while rookie Paolo Banchero had 18 points and six rebounds.

Orlando also received a spark from center Wendell Carter Jr. and guard Gary Harris.

Carter returned after missing 18 games due to plantar fascia. He tallied eight points and four rebounds in 19 minutes and is eager to contribute to a team on the upswing.

Harris had nine points in 21 minutes against San Antonio after missing 11 games with a right-hamstring strain.

Orlando’s formidable front line of Bol Bol, Moritz Wagner, Mo Bamba and Carter could create problems for Los Angeles, which lacks a consistent inside presence without Davis.

Center Thomas Bryant is averaging 10.8 points and 5.4 rebounds in 13 games this month, but James clearly needs more help from teammates. At 13-20, the Lakers are looking to avoid their third five-game losing streak of the season.

Ham said James’ leadership is keeping the team afloat. The four-time MVP is averaging 27.8 points, 8.1 rebounds and 6.6 assists in 36 minutes per game.
