KANSAS CITY, Kan. – Houston Dynamo FC fell to Sporting Kansas City in a high-scoring affair on the road by a final score of 4-2. The six total goals scored represent the highest scoring total in a game for the Dynamo this season.

Dynamo forward Fafa Picault scored his 11th goal of the season, setting a new career high, and added his fifth assist of the year. Midfielder Darwin Quintero scored his second goal of the season, and goalkeeper Michael Nelson was credited with five saves on the day, earning a $500 soccer equipment donation from Allstate and Univision for MLS WORKS’ Every Save Makes A Difference program.

Kansas City broke through first, when forward Johnny Russell won a foul inside the penalty box in the 13th minute, giving Kansas City a penalty kick. After a lengthy video review, the referee confirmed the penalty call and Russell finally took the penalty in the 16th minute and powered the ball into the bottom right corner past Nelson.

Nelson came up big with two saves in the span of thirty seconds in the 24th minute. Both shots came from outside the penalty box, with the Katy, Texas-native making a diving stop on the first shot before securing the ball in his arms following the second.

Kansas City broke through again in the 26th minute when midfielder Gadi Kinda sent a through ball to forward Daniel Sallói racing down the left wing for the second goal of the match.

Houston came out of the locker room strong to begin the second half, as Picault and forward Griffin Dorsey continued their recent run of great chemistry. In the 50th minute, Dorsey found some space on the right wing and was able to get a cross off just in front of the Kansas City goalkeeper. The ball fell to the feet of Picault, who knocked the ball into the top corner of the goal and pull the Dynamo within one.

The Dynamo nearly tied things up in the 56th minute, as Dorsey got another dangerous cross off, this time after a short corner. Once again, Dorsey’s ball found Picault, who put it into the back of the net with a header. However, Picault was ruled offside and the goal was disallowed.

Two minutes later, Kansas City brought the game back to a two-goal margin, as Sallói found Kinda alone in front of the goal, setting up the home team’s third goal of the match.

Houston, however, was determined to keep the game competitive. In the 76th minute, Picault received a pass from defender Maynor Figueroa and found himself with room to operate on the left wing. The forward was able to get off a dangerous cross that found the head of Quintero. Quintero nodded the ball past the keeper to once again reduce the Kansas City lead to one goal.

In the 90th minute, Russell dribbled through the Dynamo defense by himself and knocked home one more goal for Kansas City as the game finished 4-2.

Leon Flach scores first career MLS goal; 10 men Union win third consecutive match at Subaru Park

CHESTER, Pa. – The Philadelphia Union kicked off October with a 3-0 victory over the Columbus Crew Sunday afternoon at Subaru Park. With the home victory, the Union moved up to third place in the Eastern Conference. Jack Elliott opened the scoring in the 25th minute. The center back took advantage of a Union free kick outside of the box, driving a low shot below the wall and into the bottom left corner to give the Union the 1-0 advantage. It was Elliott’s second goal of the MLS season. Right after the second half kickoff, captain Alejandro Bedoya extended the Union lead to two. The goal is Bedoya’s 15th career league goal for Philadelphia, commemorating his 145th start for the Union. The Columbus Crew looked to cut the lead in half with a penalty kick in the 76th minute, but Andre Blake made the save, preserving the clean sheet for the 10 man Union. Sunday was Blake’s 10th clean sheet of the season. Leon Flach added the finishing touch to the victory, lacing an 89th minute strike past the Columbus keeper to make it a 3-0 victory. With the win, the Union have now won their last three matches at home, and are undefeated in their last four league contests.

The Union are on the road at TQL Stadium on Saturday where they will play FC Cincinnati (8:00 p.m. ET / PHL17).

Two Additional Sounders FC Players Called into International Duty

Alex Roldan and Xavier Arreaga have all been called-up to play for their respective national teams for upcoming 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifying matches; Sounders FC now has a total of five players called into international duty

SEATTLE, WASH. – Two more Seattle Sounders FC players have been called into international duty, as Alex Roldan and Xavier Arreaga are set to join the El Salvador and Ecuador, respectively, for upcoming 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifying matches.

The two players join Raúl Ruidíaz, Crisitan Roldan and Nouhou, who were all recently announced to be joining their respective national teams for the October round of qualifying matches, as well.

Alex Roldan, 25, earns his third career call-up for El Salvador, previously getting the nod for the team’s 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup tournament run and most recent round of World Cup Qualifying matches. He scored a goal in his first appearance with the squad, a 2-0 win over Guatemala in the group stage of the Gold Cup. Roldan started all three of El Salvador’s matches during its September round of Qualifying matches. El Salvador is scheduled to play Panama on October 7, Costa Rica on October 10 and Mexico October 13. El Salvador stands in seventh place in the Concacaf standings after one round of qualifying matches (0-1-2, 2 points). He has started 20 matches for Sounders FC during its 2021 campaign, scoring one goal.

Arreaga, 27, is set to join Ecuador for another round of FIFA World Cup Qualifying matches, having been called up earlier in September, as well. Arreaga has appeared in seven matches during Ecuador’s 2022 World Cup Qualifying campaign, including its match against Paraguay on September 2. La Tri is set to play three matches in this round of qualifiers against Bolivia on October 7, Venezuela on October 10 and Colombia on October 14. Ecuador is currently in fourth place in the CONMEBOL World Cup Qualifying table (4-4-1, 13 points). The Ecuadorian has scored two goals in 18 appearances for the Rave Green this year.

After emerging victorious against the San Jose Earthquakes in midweek action, Seattle returns home to host the Colorado Rapids at Lumen Field later today (7:00 p.m. PT / FOX 13+, Prime Video, 1090 KJR AM, El Rey 1360 AM).
