Quakes’ eight-match unbeaten streak on road snapped
VANCOUVER, B.C. – The San Jose Earthquakes fell to Vancouver Whitecaps FC 3-0 on Saturday night at BC Place. The defeat snaps an eight-match unbeaten streak on the road for San Jose, their longest such run in team history.
Vancouver took the lead in the 26th minute. A low shot by Ryan Gauld was saved by Quakes goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski but Brian White put away the rebound.
Whitecaps FC doubled their lead in the 59th minute when White headed home a short free kick by Deiber Caicedo. White then completed his hat-trick in the 74th minute by heading a corner kick past Marcinkowski.
The Earthquakes will now return to San Jose to host Mexico’s Cruz Azul in an international friendly at PayPal Park on Thursday, Oct. 7 at 7:30 p.m. PT. San Jose’s next MLS match is on Saturday, Oct. 16 at LAFC.

On the plan for tonight’s match:
“We had to make movements to free up players in certain zones. Those movements were slow. I thought the match was even in the first half. On three or four occasions, we were able to have the control we were looking for. We met a team that has been growing in important ways, with a secure system of play. We knew that if we conceded a goal, it would be hard to turn it around because they are secure on defense. In the second half, we took more risks. The set piece played a fundamental factor against us.”
On having important players return from injury:
“Tanner Beason was almost available for the match. I didn’t want to risk it because he’s had a minor injury. I thought if he rested this game, he would recover back to 100 percent. Surely after this break in the season, he will be available for selection. Jeremy Ebobisse’s situation depends primarily on him. It’s a matter of him feeling sure. At this moment, he has shown that he is not yet ready to play.”
On the team becoming more stable:
“We have to keep improving but we have less and less time. We’re talking about the last six games and a projection of our future in which there is some instability. Personally, I’d like to plan for what is coming up. We have to live day by day, we’d love to plan for the future, but the reality is different.”

“There are some things that we have to work on. We have to work to improve things defensively and on set pieces. There were two difficult set pieces and we have to be sharper. This is soccer. We are working hard. We have six more games to keep going and improve things.”

“Like you said, we have worked hard to improve on set pieces. We have to continue talking to each other and there are some details that we need to improve. The other [non-set-piece] goal was another that we have to take more care and there are many things we have to work on. But we’re positive in thinking about what’s next and the six games we have left.”
MATCH RECAP: Daryl Dike’s Stoppage Time Stunner Sends Orlando City Past DC United

ORLANDO, Fla. – Orlando City SC (11-8-9, 42 points) earned a dramatic come-from-behind victory over D.C. United (12-12-4, 40 points), taking 2-1 win at Exploria Stadium thanks to a stoppage-time game-winner off the head of Daryl Dike.
The finish served as Dike’s third in as many matches, good for his sixth in 2021 with Chris Mueller earning the assist. The helper marked Mueller’s fifth assist of the 2021 campaign, taking sole possession of second in Club-history with his 23rd helper as a Lion.
Robin Jansson netted the early equalizer for City, serving as his second goal in MLS action. With the victory, the Lions moved back up to third in the Eastern Conference standings, two points clear of the Black and Red.
City will enjoy a week off from match play before returning to the field on Saturday, Oct. 16, traveling to take on FC Cincinnati at West End Stadium in a locally broadcast fixture on FOX35 PLUS.

“It was a very important night for us and it was emotional, of course. We have seen how hard the players have worked to get over this hurdle, this period of three weeks where we couldn’t get the results. The players were really united and after dominating the game, being constant in our purpose and idea of the game. One point was not enough for them. In front of our fans, they brought that energy at the end and it was probably what we were looking for to change the road now. That’s what makes it emotional. I have seen the players grinding and working and pushing and they deserve all the credit and obviously our fans here today, pushing and helping us. I think we were the best team on the field. I think we got the three points because we were always constant in our intentions in trying to hurt [D.C.] United, who are a very good team. Today our heart was bigger and that’s what we’re very proud of.”

HOUSTON – Houston Dynamo FC travel to Children’s Mercy Park on Sunday to face Sporting Kansas City for their final meeting of the regular season. Both teams have split the two previous meetings with the local side earning three points in each encounter.
Houston looks for three points prior to the next international break after a 0-0 draw with the Vancouver Whitecaps on Wednesday. Dynamo goalkeeper Michael Nelson earned his second clean sheet of the season on Wednesday and finished with a limited workload against Vancouver, finishing with only one save.
Dynamo defender Teenage Hadebe played a large role in limiting Vancouver. The Zimbabwe international led the team with five clearances and 10 recoveries. Hadebe also finished with three key passes and one block on Wednesday. The 26-year-old earned MLSSoccer.com Team of the Week honors for his performance at BBVA Stadium on Wednesday.
The Dynamo and Sporting Kansas City have split the two previous meetings this season. Maxi Urruti led Houston to a 1-0 victory over Kansas City at BBVA Stadium on May 12. Urruti and Matias Vera scored for Houston in the second meeting on May 29, but the Dynamo fell 3-2 to Kansas City at Children’s Mercy Park.
Kansas City enters Sunday’s game with the second-best record in the Western Conference. Sporting has won three out of their last four games after defeating FC Dallas 3-1 on Wednesday. Daniel Salloi scored a brace against Dallas and currently leads the team 15 goals and six assists. Forward Johnny Russel also scored for Kansas City on Wednesday and recently signed a contract extension with the club.

TEENAGE EARNS LEAGUE HONORS: Defender Teenage Hadebe earned MLSSoccer.com Team of the Week honors after leading Houston to a clean sheet against the Vancouver Whitecaps on Wednesday. Hadebe has helped Houston to three clean sheets since making his debut with the club in a 0-0 draw with the Whitecaps on July 20. The Zimbabwe international leads the team with 64 clearances since making his MLS debut and also leads the Dynamo with 85 recoveries. Hadebe adds 26 interceptions since making his debut and has the second highest tally on the backline.
DYNAMO NAVIGATE NEXT INTERNATIONAL WINDOW: The Dynamo expect up to four players to depart for national team duty early next week. This is the final international window during the regular season and features call ups for Teenage Hadebe with Zimbabwe, Darwin Ceren will join El Salvador and Honduras named Maynor Figueroa and Boniek Garcia to their roster for World Cup qualifiers. Honduras will face Costa Rica, Mexico and Jamaica in the October round of FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Ceren and El Salvador will face Panama, Costa Rica and Mexico in the next round of Concacaf play. Hadebe will join Zimbabwe for a pair of AFCON World Cup qualification matches against Ghana on Oct. 9 and Oct. 12.
KANSAS CITY ENTER KEY STRETCH: Kansas City enters Sunday’s game two points shy of the Seattle Sounders at the top of the Western Conference. Sporting will look to make up ground prior to a two-game road trip that ends at Lumen Field against the Sounders on Sept. 23. Sporting’s offense ranks among the best in MLS with 47 goals scored this season, the most in the Western Conference and third most in MLS. The bulk of the offense has come from the trio of Daniel Salloi, Johnny Russell and Alan Pulido who combine for 31 goals and 16 assists.
Columbus Crew announces Call-Ups for October International Window
Luis Diaz, Liam Fraser, Jonathan Mensah, Gyasi Zardes and Lucas Zelarayan to join respective national teams for 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers
COLUMBUS – Columbus Crew today announced that five players have received international call-ups ahead of 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers during the October international window: Luis Diaz (Costa Rica), Liam Fraser (Canada), Jonathan Mensah (Ghana), Gyasi Zardes (United States) and Lucas Zelarayan (Armenia).
Diaz will meet up with Costa Rica for three matches in the Third Round of Concacaf qualifiers. Costa Rica first travels to San Pedro Sula, Honduras, to battle Honduras at Estadio Olimpico Metropolitano on October 7 before returning to San Jose, Costa Rica, on October 10 to host El Salvador at Estadio Nacional. The Ticos then face the United States at the Crew’s new, modern home Lower.com Field in downtown Columbus on Wednesday, October 13. Diaz has been capped seven times by Costa Rica, last appearing in the Concacaf Gold Cup Quarterfinal Round match against Canada on July 25, 2021.
Fraser is set to join Canada for three matches, first traveling to Estadio Azteca in Mexico City to face Mexico on October 7, followed by a trip to Kingston, Jamaica, to battle Jamaica at Independence Park on October 10. The Canucks then return to Toronto to play against Panama at BMO Field on October 13. Fraser has been capped eight times by Canada, last appearing in a Concacaf Gold Cup Quarterfinal Round match against Costa Rica on July 25, 2021.
Mensah is slated to represent Ghana in CAF group-stage action. The Black Stars battle Zimbabwe twice, hosting the first leg on October 9 at Cape Coast Sports Stadium in Cape Coast, Ghana, before traveling to Harare, Zimbabwe, for the second match on October 12 at National Sports Stadium. Mensah has earned 61 caps for Ghana, last appearing in a FIFA World Cup qualifier against South Africa on September 6, 2021.
Zardes and the U.S. will face Jamaica at Q2 Stadium in Austin for a third-round match on Thursday, October 7. The USMNT will then travel to Panama City to face Panama at Estadio Rommel Fernandez on Sunday, October 10 before closing out the window against Costa Rica at Lower.com Field in Columbus on Wednesday, October. Zardes has earned 62 caps for the United States and last appeared in the 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup Final against Mexico on August 1.
Zelarayan will join up with Armenia for two UEFA group-stage matches. In Group J play, Armenia first travels to Reykjavik, Iceland, to face Iceland at Laugardalsvollur on October 8 before flying to Bucharest, Romania, to battle Romania on October 11 at Stadionul Steaua. This is the first time that Zelarayan has received a call-up from Armenia.

Cubs place RHP Tommy Nance on injured list, select RHP Joe Biagini from Triple-A Iowa
ST. LOUIS – The Chicago Cubs today placed right-handed pitcher Tommy Nance on the injured list and selected right-handed pitcher Joe Biagini from Triple-A Iowa.
Dodgers recall Mitch White
LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Dodgers recalled right-handed pitcher Mitch White and placed left-handed pitcher Clayton Kershaw on the 10-day injured list with left forearm discomfort.
White, 26, returns for his 10th stint with the team and he is 1-3 with a 3.74 ERA (19 ER/45.2 IP) and 48 strikeouts in 20 games for the Dodgers. He has spent parts of the season with Low-A Rancho Cucamonga and Triple-A Oklahoma City, going a combined 3-0 with a 1.65 ERA (8 ER/43.2 IP) and 53 strikeouts in 10 games. In 10 games at the Triple-A level, he is 1-0 with a 1.69 ERA (6 ER/32.0 IP) and 39 strikeouts. The former second rounder out of Santa Clara University is 2-3 with a 3.51 ERA (19 ER/48.2 IP) in 22 career MLB games.
Kershaw, 33, started last night, pitching 1.2 innings, allowing three runs with one strikeout. This is his second stint on the injured list this season, missing 57 games from August 9 through September 13. On the season, he is 10-8 with a 3.55 ERA (48 ER/121.2 IP) with 144 strikeouts. The three-time Cy Young award winner has been with the Dodgers since being drafted as the seventh overall selection in the 2006 First Year Player Draft out of Highland Park High School and is 185-84 with a 2.49 ERA (679 ER/2454.2 IP) and 2,670 strikeouts.
Twins place John Gant on 10-day injured list
Charlie Barnes recalled from Triple-A St. Paul
KANSAS CITY, MO – The Minnesota Twins announced today that they have placed right-handed pitcher John Gant on the 10-day Injured List with a right mild groin strain.
Gant made the start last night in Kansas City, allowing six runs on eight hits in 4.0 innings pitched, with two walks and three strikeouts. He has appeared in 39 games (21 starts) between Minnesota and St. Louis this season, going 5-11 with a 4.09 ERA (110.0 IP, 50 ER), 71 walks and 92 strikeouts.
To make replace Gant on the 28-man roster, the Twins have recalled left-handed pitcher Charlie Barnes from Triple-A St. Paul. Barnes, who was optioned after his start on Tuesday, has appeared in eight games (7 starts) for the Twins this season, going 0-3 with a 5.86 ERA (35.1 IP, 23 ER), 15 walks and 17 strikeouts over five stints with Minnesota in 2021.
Pirates Roster move
The Pirates have recalled infielder Oneil Cruz from Triple-A Indianapolis and have placed RHP Tanner Anderson on the 10-day injured list (retro to 10/1) with a right foot contusion.
In 68 minor league games this season, Cruz hit .310 (84-for-271) with 16 doubles, five triples, 17 home runs, 47 RBI and a .970 OPS. He went 11-for-21 (.524) with five home runs, a .655 OBP and a 1.941 OPS in six games with Indianapolis after being promoted there from Double-A Altoona on 9/20.
Cruz is ranked by MLB Pipeline as Pittsburgh’s No. 3 prospect and the No. 52 overall prospect in MLB.
