Stützle, MacKinnon and Larkin Named NHL ‘Three Stars’ of the Week

0

NEW YORK – Ottawa Senators left wing Tim Stützle, Colorado Avalanche center Nathan MacKinnon and Detroit Red Wings center Dylan Larkin have been named the NHL’s “Three Stars” for the week ending Feb. 19.

FIRST STAR – TIM STÜTZLE, LW, OTTAWA SENATORS

Stützle led the NHL with 4-6—10 and two game-winning goals in four contests to power the Senators (27-24-4, 58 points) to seven out of eight possible standings points (3-0-1). He factored on Ottawa’s first six goals of the week, matching a personal high with 1-3—4 (highlighted by his second career overtime goal) in a 4-3 victory against the Calgary Flames Feb. 13 and posting 1-1—2 (as well as a shootout goal) in a 3-2 triumph over the New York Islanders Feb. 14. Stützle then added one assist in a 4-3 overtime loss to the Chicago Blackhawks Feb. 17 before closing the week with 2-1—3 (including his ninth career game-winning goal and third of 2022-23) in a 7-2 victory against the St. Louis Blues Feb. 19. The 21-year-old Stützle, who is playing in his third season after being selected third overall in the 2020 NHL Draft, paces the Senators with 26 goals and sits second on the team with 59 points – both career highs – through 51 total appearances in 2022-23 (26-33—59).

SECOND STAR – NATHAN MacKINNON, C, COLORADO AVALANCHE

MacKinnon ranked second in the NHL with 3-6—9 across four games – all multi-point efforts – to also propel the Avalanche (31-19-5, 67 points) to a 3-0-1 week. He collected 1-1—2 in each of his first two outings, a 4-3 shootout loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning Feb. 14 and a 3-2 victory (featuring the game-winning goal) over the Minnesota Wild Feb. 15. MacKinnon then assisted on two goals in a 4-1 triumph against the St. Louis Blues Feb. 18 and registered 1-2—3 (his seventh three-point performance of the season) in a 6-5 overtime win versus the Edmonton Oilers Feb. 19. The 27-year-old MacKinnon, the No. 1 overall pick from the 2013 NHL Draft, places 14th in the League with 19-48—67 overall this season despite missing 11 contests (44 GP). His 2022-23 average of 1.52 points per game ranks second in the NHL, behind only Connor McDavid (1.79).

THIRD STAR – DYLAN LARKIN, C, DETROIT RED WINGS

Larkin recorded 4-4—8 in four appearances to guide the Red Wings (26-21-8, 60 points) to a 3‑1‑0 week. He scored twice, including his fourth game-winning goal of the season, in a 6-1 triumph over the Vancouver Canucks Feb. 13 before posting 1-1—2 in a 5-4 shootout win versus the Edmonton Oilers Feb. 15. Larkin then matched a career high with three assists (last achieved Feb. 12, 2022 vs. PHI) in a 5-2 victory against the Calgary Flames Feb. 16. He finished the week with one of Detroit’s two goals in a 4-2 loss to the Seattle Kraken Feb. 18. The 26-year-old Larkin, the 15th overall selection from the 2014 NHL Draft, leads the Red Wings in goals (22), assists (34) and points (56) – as well as power-play goals (11) and power-play points (21) – through 54 total games this season.

Player Development rehab updates

0

We wanted to update RHP Daniel Espino on the following ahead of Minor League camp on Friday: When Daniel reported persistent shoulder soreness and swelling following a throwing session in January, he had not yet reached the mound as part of his preparation for the 2023 season. His diagnostic work-up revealed a strain of the subscapularis and a tear of the anterior capsule of his shoulder after review and advice from our medical team. At six weeks after the injury, Daniel will be evaluated once more in Spring Training to repeat ultrasound imaging and devise a strategy for his return to throwing. Before beginning a return progression, we anticipate a total of at least eight weeks of throwing recovery.

OF DeLauter Chase: After experiencing symptoms in his left foot in the summer of 2022, Chase was ramping up to full baseball activity during the offseason. However, Chase reported experiencing running-related pain in his left foot in December; Later imaging revealed a small fracture at the base of his fifth toe. Dr. Robert Anderson, his initial surgeon, recommended and later carried out surgery (January 10) to replace his left foot screw with a bone graft in the fractured area. Chase is presently supporting himself with weight in a walking boot, and imaging will be performed ten weeks after surgery. A return to play is anticipated within four to five months.

White Sox agree to terms with Elvis Andrus; designate Bennett Sousa for assignment

0

GLENDALE, Ariz. – The left-handed pitcher Bennett Sousa has been designated for assignment and the Chicago White Sox have agreed to terms on a one-year, $3 million contract with the two-time All-Star infielder Elvis Andrus.

In 149 combined games with Oakland (106 games) and the White Sox (43) in 2022, Andrus, 34, hit.249/.303/.404 (133-535) with 32 doubles, 17 home runs, 58 RBI, 66 runs scored, 18 stolen bases, and a career-best.982 fielding percentage. The second-highest totals of his career were his 17 home runs and 49 extra-base hits, and his 149 games and 32 doubles were his most since 2017.

After signing with the Sox as a free agent on August 19, the 6-foot, 210-pound Andrus hit.271/.309/.464 (49-181) with eight doubles, nine home runs, 28 RBI, 11 stolen bases (on 11 attempts), and a.994 fielding percentage (1 E/162 TC). In his final 36 games, he batted.289/.329/.513 (44-152) with nine home runs, 24 RBI, 23 runs scored, and 10 stolen bases. He also started every one of Chicago’s final 33 games.

With 360 doubles, 50 triples, 96 home runs, 731 RBI, 1,019 runs scored, and 335 stolen bases in 1,947 games with Texas (2009-20), the A’s (2020-22), and the White Sox (2022), Andrus, a Maracay, Venezuelan native, is a career hitter who hits.270/.326/.371 (1,997-7,398). He ranks second among active players in steals, fifth in games played and hits, seventh in triples, and 10th in doubles and runs scored.

In his career, Andrus, who was an American League All-Star with the Rangers in 2010 and 2012, has had more than 20 stolen bases ten times, more than 30 doubles six times, more than 75 runs seven times, and more than 150 hits nine times. He also made five appearances in the postseason with Texas (2010-12, ’15-16), batting.266 (46-173) and assisting the Rangers in winning back-to-back AL pennants in 2010-11.

In his first season in the majors, Sousa, 27, went 3-0 with an 8.41 ERA (19 ER/20.1 IP), one save, six holds, and 12 strikeouts in 25 appearances for the White Sox in 2022.

40 players remain on the White Sox 40-man roster.

Cubs agree to terms with RHP Michael Fulmer on a one-year Major League contract

0

CHICAGO – Michael Fulmer, a right-handed pitcher, has signed a one-year major league contract with the Chicago Cubs. The deal’s terms were not made public. Codi Heuer, a right-handed pitcher, has been placed on the 60-day injured list in a similar move as he continues to recover from Tommy John surgery.

In his career, Fulmer, 29, has gone 34-45 with a 3.89 ERA (267 ER/617.0 IP), two complete games, one shutout, and 17 saves in 204 major league games (89 starts) with Minnesota and Detroit over six seasons (2016-2018, 2020-22). He won the American League Rookie of the Year award in 2016 for the fifth time in Tigers history and was named an All-Star in 2017. Before moving to the bullpen in 2021, Fulmer began his major league career as a starting pitcher.

During the 2022 season, the six-foot-three-inch Fulmer split time between Detroit and Minnesota, appearing in 67 games—tied for 11th most in the American League. The right-handed pitcher went 5-6 with a 3.39 earned run average (24 ER/63.2 innings), 25 saves, 61 strikeouts, and a 1.37 earned run average. He had a 1.89 ERA (7 ER/33.1 IP) in his first 34 appearances through July 12 and did not allow a run in 10 consecutive appearances (10.1 IP). Fulmer was traded to the Twins on August 2 in exchange for left-handed pitcher Sawyer Gipson-Long, and he started the season with the Tigers.

Fulmer made his major league debut in 2016 for Detroit, going 11-7 with a 3.06 ERA (54 ER/159.0 IP) in 26 starts. He went on to win both the American League Rookie of the Year award and the A.L. Cy Young Award, finishing 10th overall. He started the year at Triple-A Toledo, but he was called up to make his major league debut on April 29 at Minnesota, where he won with two earned runs over five innings. Fulmer threw 33.1 scoreless innings from May 21 to June 17, the longest streak in Tigers franchise history and the second-longest streak by a rookie in the majors since 1971, behind only Fernando Valenzuela (35.0 innings in 1981).

Fulmer made 25 starts in 2017 and was 10-12 with a 3.83 ERA (70 ER/164.2 IP). Prior to the All-Star break, he was 9-6 with a 3.19 ERA (41 ER/115.2 IP) in 17 starts. From April 7 to May 27, he made 10 quality starts in a row, earning him the Tigers Pitcher of the Month honors in May (3-2, 2.19) and June (2-3, 4.28). Despite being selected to the American League All-Star team, the right-hander did not pitch in the game.

Due to Tommy John surgery, Fulmer missed the 2019 season, but he came back to make 10 starts in the short 2020 season. He made 52 appearances in the bullpen during the 2021 season, all but four of them as a reliever. Elias noted that Fulmer became the first Tigers pitcher to make a start one day and earn a save the following day when he recorded his first major league save on May 5, 2021, against Boston.

The New York Mets selected Fulmer in the first round (44th overall) of the 2011 First-Year Player Draft. On July 31, 2015, the Mets traded Fulmer to the Tigers in exchange for outfielder Yoenis Céspedes and right-handed pitcher Luis Cessa. Fulmer is from Guthrie, Oklahoma, and he went to Edmond, Oklahoma’s Deer Creek High School. In 86 major league relief appearances with the White Sox (2020-21) and Cubs (2021), Heuer, 26, is 10-4 with a 3.56 ERA (36 ER/91.0 IP) and has made three saves. On July 30, 2021, the Cubs acquired the native of Missoula, Montana, from the White Sox in exchange for right-handed pitcher Craig Kimbrel and infielder Nick Madrigal. In March 2022, Heuer underwent Tommy John surgery.

• A win tonight would make the Sharks the first team that the Kraken has defeated five times. Seattle owns a 4-1-0 all-time record against San Jose.

• Jared McCann (1.89) was leading the NHL in goals-per-60 at five-on-five this season among players that have played in at least six games this year entering play Sunday.

• Since the start of the New Year, the Kraken are tied for the league lead in wins (14) and rank second in points (30). The team’s 80 goals and 3.64 goals-per-game rank second and seventh in the league, respectively, since Jan. 1.

• With 56 games played, the Kraken have already surpassed their win (27) and point (60) totals from last season.

San Jose.

• Five Kraken fathers have previously played hockey on a professional level in North America or abroad: Todd Bjorkstrand, Robert
Burakovsky, Ted Donato, Craig Geekie and Hannie Sprong. Adam Larsson’s late father Robert also played professionally in
Sweden.

• Robert Burakovsky and Ted Donato are the two Kraken dads with NHL experience. Robert played in 23 games for the Ottawa Senators before continuing his professional career in Europe. Ted totaled 796 regular-season games over 13 NHL seasons that he played with the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, Boston Bruins, Dallas Stars, Los Angeles Kings, New York Islanders, New York Rangers and St. Louis Blues.
