MLS Preview: Vancouver Whitecaps FC (4-4-5) at St. Louis City SC (7-4-1)

The Vancouver Whitecaps FC lost, 2-1, at Charlotte FC last May in its last meeting with an expansion teams. Vancouver Whitecaps FC had been unbeaten in five straight road games against MLS newcomers (W3 D2) dating back 2015 before the defeat at Charlotte FC last season.

St. Louis City SC recorded its third four-goal win of the season with a 4-0 victory over Sporting Kansas City on Saturday. Only one other expansion team in MLS history recorded multiple four-goal wins in its inaugural season: Atlanta United FC (4 times) in 2017.

Fourteen of the Vancouver Whitecaps FC’s 17 points this season, including a 2-0 win over the Seattle Sounders FC on Saturday, have come at home. The Vancouver Whitecaps FC are winless on the road this season (D3 L3) have gone 14 straight away games without a win (D7 L7), tied with the San Jose Earthquakes for the longest active run in the league.

Nicolas Gioacchini scored his fourth goal of the season in St. Louis City SC’s win over Sporting Kansas City while Eduard Lowen and Jared Stroud added their third each and Indiana Vassilev scored his second. Seven different St. Louis City SC players have multiple goals this season, more than any other teams in MLS.

Pedro Vite has scored four career MLS goals, including scoring in each of Vancouver Whitecaps FC’s last two matches, on May 17 and May 20. Vite’s other two MLS goals also came in a span of three days, scoring on September 14 and September 17, 2022.
