MLS Preview: Real Salt Lake (4-6-3) at Minnesota United FC (5-5-3)

Real Salt Lake’s 3-0 win over the Minnesota United FC last August was just its third win in 13 all-time meetings with the Loons (D5 L5) after Minnesota won, 3-2, at home last July. Neither team has won consecutive matches against the other.

After a run of one point from six games, Minnesota United FC has won consecutive MLS matches, each by a 1-0 scoreline. Twelve of Minnesota United FC’s 13 MLS matches this season, including all five of its wins, have been decided by one goal or drawn.

Real Salt Lake ended a four-match scoring drought in league play with a 3-2 win at rivals Colorado Rapids on Saturday. Real Salt Lake has posted back-to-back road wins in league play only once since the start of the 2019 season, winning at FC Dallas and Sporting Kansas City in its last two away matches of the 2021 regular season.

Bongokuhle Hlongwane has scored the only goal in each of Minnesota United FC’s last two MLS matches, both 1-0 wins. Hlongwane has scored four goals in his last five appearances in all competitions, equaling his total from his first 43 games with Minnesota United FC.

Anderson Julio has scored four goals in four games against Minnesota United FC in his MLS career, including scoring off the bench in both meetings last season. No player since the start of the 2018 season has scored in three straight MLS matches against Minnesota United FC.
