MLS Preview: San Jose Earthquakes (0-0-0) at Atlanta United FC (0-0-0)

Only Minnesota vs. Toronto (6.3 – 19 in 3 games) has featured more goals per meeting among MLS matches that have been played at least three times. Atlanta United has won all three of its matches against San Jose, averaging 5.7 goals scored per match over the three games (17 goals).

In 2022, Atlanta United failed to make the playoffs for the second time in three seasons. After scoring a league-high 182 points in its first three MLS seasons (2017-19), the Five Stripes have now scored 113 points, which ranks them 19th in MLS.

For the first time in 15 seasons, San Jose will begin the regular season on the road. The Quakes have lost each of their last four games since starting the season on the road. The last time they won a season-opening game away from home was in 2003, when they beat Colorado 2-1.

After scoring 103 MLS goals for Atlanta United (including playoffs), Josef Martinez was traded to Inter Miami FC in the offseason. These goals were 81 more than any other player in club history and 32 more than any MLS player since he joined the league in 2017.

During the offseason, San Jose made a deal with Columbus centerback Johnathan Mensah. Since joining the league in 2017 (including playoffs), Mensah leads MLS with 809 clearances and 449 headed clearances. In the past two seasons, he has scored four goals, three of which came against Atlanta United.
