MLS Preview: Portland Timbers (5-9-7) at Colorado Rapids (2-10-8)

The Colorado Rapids have lost only two of 14 regular-season home matches against the Portland Timbers (W8 D4), including a 2-0 win last April. The Colorado Rapids have scored at least twice in 11 of those 14 matches, including each of the last five.

This will be the 26th time in 28 MLS seasons that the Colorado Rapids have hosted a match on Independence Day, only not doing so in 2011 and 2020. The Colorado Rapids have won 10 of its first 11 matches on the Fourth of July (L1) but has won only three of its last 14 Independence Day games (D5 L6), going winless in the last six.

The Portland Timbers have won only one of their last nine MLS matches (D4 L4), failing to score more than one goal in any of those matches. The nine straight regular-season games without multiple goals is the longest such streak in team history.

The Colorado Rapids have collected two points from their last nine MLS matches, failing to score in six of those games including the last four in a row. The Colorado Rapids have now gone five straight regular-season games without a goal in a single season just once in club history, in September-October 1999.

Franck Boli scored the Portland Timbers’ lone goal in its defeat to the Minnesota United FC Loons and has now scored four of the Portland Timbers’ last five MLS goals. No Portland Timbers player other than Boli (5) and Evander (3) has scored a goal in any of the Portland Timbers’ last 10 MLS matches.
