MLS Preview: New York City FC (5-9-11) at FC Cincinnati (15-3-6)

FC Cincinnati has won both of its matches against New York City FC this season, one in the league and one in the U.S. Open Cup. FC Cincinnati has never defeated New York City FC prior to this year (D2 L6), losing the first six meetings before drawing both games last season.

FC Cincinnati has collected 34 out of a possible 36 points at home thus season (W11 D1), tied for the most after 12 home games of a season in MLS history. Only the San Jose Earthquakes in 2002 (W12 D1 L0) collected 37 points from their first 13 home games of a season.

New York City FC has won only one of its last 16 regular-season matches (D8 L7) dating back to the end of April. Only Toronto FC (10) has collected fewer points than New York City FC (11) over that time.

FC Cincinnati’s 3-0 loss to the Columbus Crew SC on Sunday was just its third league defeat of the season. FC Cincinnati has conceded 11 goals in the three losses (3.67 per match) while allowing only 17 goals in their other 21 league games in 2023 (0.81 per match).

Maximiliano Moralez made his MLS season debut on Sunday and created five chances for teammates in New York City FC’s defeat. It was the 30th time Moralez has set up at least five shots for teammates in a regular-season match, only Carles Gil (42) has more such games since Moralez joined MLS in 2017.
