MLS Preview: Minnesota United FC (5-5-4) at Austin FC (4-6-4)

Minnesota United FC has won three of its five all-time meetings with Austin FC (L2), winning three of the last four after Austin FC won the first encounter in May of 2021. Four of the five wins were decided by a one-goal margin, though the latest goal in any of of the five matches was score in the 62nd minute.

Austin FC suffered its sixth league loss of the season in its 14th match on Saturday, a 2-1 defeat defeat against the Houston Dynamo FC. Austin FC didn’t lose for the sixth time until its 26th match of the season, though the Austin FC Verde have not dropped consecutive MLS matches this season.

Minnesota United FC won its last away match, a 1-0 victory at the Portland Timbers on May 20. The Minnesota United FC Loons have won an MLS-high four away matches this season and have totaled 10 away wins since the start of last season (D1 L14), only CF Montreal Impact (12) has more.

Gyasi Zardes has scored in three straight MLS matches and has become the 13th player in MLS history to score 100 goals. Seven of those goals came against Minnesota United FC, including hat-tricks in 2018 and 2022. No player has scored three hat-tricks against a single opponent in MLS history.

Bongokuhle Hlongwane attempted a club-record nine shots in Minnesota United FC’s draw with Real Salt Lake on Saturday. Hlongwane has attempted 36 shots in 13 appearances this season, hitting 16 on target, nearly as many of each as he had in 29 regular-season games last year (44 shots; 19 on target).
