Cubs activate OF Jason Heyward off 10-day IL, option OF Greg Deichmann to Triple-A Iowa

MIAMI — The Chicago Cubs today activated outfielder Jason Heyward off the 10-day injured list and optioned outfielder Greg Deichmann to Triple-A Iowa.

 

Heyward, 32, landed on the 10-day injured list on Aug. 6 (retroactive to Aug. 4) with left index finger inflammation. He is hitting .198 (51-for-258) with 12 doubles, one triple, six home runs, 22 RBI and 24 walks in 83 games for the Cubs.

 

The left-handed-hitting Heyward is in his sixth season with the Cubs since signing prior to the team’s 2016 World Series championship campaign. In 675 games for Chicago, he has batted .247 (572-for-2,320) with 103 doubles, 16 triples and 271 RBI with 259 walks.

 

Deichmann, 26, was recalled by Chicago when Heyward landed on the 10-day injured list, and in his first career Major Lleague action, batted .174 (4-for-23) with an RBI in seven games for the Cubs. He was acquired by Chicago on July 26, with right-handed pitcher Daniel Palencia, for left-handed pitcher Andrew Chafin.
