After New York won the first two games, a pair of 3-0 victories in 2017 and 2018, Minnesota United has won its last two matches against the New York Red Bulls, winning on the road in 2019 and 2022. The Red Bulls prevailed 3-0 in their first Minnesota encounter in July 2017, their only previous encounter.

On February 25, Minnesota United defeated Dallas 1-0 to record its third opening-game victory in club history. The Loons had won their season opener twice before, and each time they won their next match, winning two straight to start 2019 and three straight to start 2020.

The New York Red Bulls procured their primary place of 2023 with a scoreless draw against Nashville on Saturday. After failing to score in its first two games in 2016, New York has done so just twice this season. In New York’s third game of the year, Sacha Kljestan scored the opening goal in the 22nd minute.

Minnesota Joined surrendered ownership in it season opening win at Dallas, holding simply 37.6 percent of the ball. Since mid-September 2021, when they had less than 40% possession, the Loons have won seven of the last eight games.

This season, the New York Red Bulls have only taken 11 shots, the fewest of any team that will play in two MLS games in 2023. On matchday one, New York was awarded a penalty kick by Facundo Torres; the Red Bulls have not conceded a goal from open play since 2023.
