118TH WORLD SERIES
Tonight continues the 118th renewal of the World Series, featuring the American League champion Houston Astros against the National League champion Philadelphia Phillies…the Fall Classic was first played in 1903 and has taken place every year since, except 1904 and 1994…in 1904, the NL champion New York Giants and their manager John McGraw refused to play the AL champion Boston Red Sox…in 1994, the season ended on Aug 11 due to the players’ strike.

• This marks the eighth time the World Series has spilled into November, joining 2021, 2017, 2016, 2015, 2010, 2009 and 2001…the return to Houston is the latest date for a game in World Series history, passing Nov 4 (2009, 2001).

• This will mark the fourth consecutive year the World Series will end in the state of Texas (in Houston in 2022, 2021 and 2019, and in Arlington in 2020).

THE WORLD SERIES AT 3-2
This is the 70th time that the World Series has stood at 3-2, including 1912 which was 3-2 through Game 6 (with a Game 2 tie)…it is the sixth of the last seven World Series to sit at 3-2 and the 10th time in 14 World Series since 2009.

• This is the third time the Astros have led 3-2 through Game 5 of the World Series, previously losing Games 6-7 vs. WSH in 2019 and winning the title in a decisive Game 7 at LAD in 2017…this is the third time the Phillies have trailed 3-2 through Game 5 and they went on to lose both previous series (2009, 1993).

• Of the previous 69 times the World Series has stood at 3-2, the team with the series lead has gone on to win the World Series 66.7 pct. (46 of 69) of the time…in addition, the team with the 3-2 lead has gone on to win Game 6 in 39.1 pct. (27 of 69) of occurrences…that has been the case in nine of the last 17 instances (2021 Braves, 2020 Dodgers, 2013 Red Sox, 2009 Yankees, 2003 Marlins, 1996 Yankees, 1995 Braves, 1993 Blue Jays and 1992 Blue Jays).

• Of the 42 times that a team leading 3-2 has dropped Game 6, they have gone on to win the series just 45.2 pct. (19 of 42) of the time…eleven of the last 14 teams to lose Game 6 with a 3-2 lead have gone on to lose the series…the last four teams with a 3-2 lead to lose Game 6 and still win Game 7 to win the World Series were the 2017 Astros, 2014 Giants, 1997 Marlins and 1975 Reds.

• The Phillies are attempting to become the 24th team to win the World Series after trailing 3-2, most recently the 2019 Nationals, 2016 Cubs and 2011 Cardinals…they would become the ninth team to win a best-of-7 World Series by winning Games 6-7 on the road (2019 Nationals, 2016 Cubs, 1979 Pirates, 1968 Tigers, 1958 Yankees, 1952 Yankees, 1934 Cardinals and 1926 Cardinals).

GAME 5 RESULTS The Astros are now 4-0 all-time in Game 5 of the World Series, winning in 2021 at ATL to extend the series, 2019 at WSH to take a 3-2 lead and 2017 vs. LAD (in 10 innings) to take a 3-2 lead…Thurday marked their first Game 5 this Postseason. • The Phillies are now 4-3 all-time in Game 5 of the World Series, winning in 2009 vs. NYY to extend the series, 2008 vs. TB to win the Fall Classic, 1993 vs. TOR to extend the series and 1980 at KC to take a 3-2 lead…the Phillies previously suffered Game 5 losses in 1983 vs. BAL and 1915 vs. BOS, both of which resulted in elimination…the Phillies are now 1-1 in Game 5s this Postseason (win vs. SD).

LOOKING AHEAD

• The Astros advanced to the World Series for the fifth time in franchise history, following 2021 (loss), 2019 (loss), 2017 (win) and 2005 (loss)…they are the first team to appear in the World Series four times in a six-year span since the Yankees did so five times in a six-year span from 1998–2003…they are the first team to win the AL pennant in back-to-back seasons since the 2014-15 Royals.

• The Astros appeared in their sixth consecutive League Championship Series, joining the 1991-99 Braves (8) as the only teams to make it six straight times.
