118TH WORLD SERIES
Tonight continues the 118th renewal of the World Series, featuring the American League champion Houston Astros against the National League champion
Philadelphia Phillies…the Fall Classic was first played in 1903 and has taken place every year since, except 1904 and 1994…in 1904, the NL champion New York Giants and their manager John McGraw refused to play the AL champion Boston Red Sox…in 1994, the season ended on Aug 11 due to the players’ strike.

• This marks the eighth time the World Series has spilled into November, joining 2021, 2017, 2016, 2015, 2010, 2009 and 2001…if necessary, Games 6-7 will be the latest date for a game in World Series history, passing Nov 4 (2009, 2001).

SERIES AT 2-1
This is the 94th time that the World Series has stood at 2-1, including 1912 which was 2-1 through Game 4 (with a Game 2 tie)…it is the 10th consecutive World Series to sit at 2-1 and the 19th in the last 23 World Series beginning in 2000.

• This is the third time the Phillies have led 2-1 through Game 3 of the World Series, and the previous two times resulted in the only World Series titles in franchise history (2008, 1980)…this is the third time the Astros have trailed 2-1 through Game 3 and they went on to lose both previous series (2021, 2019).

• When the Fall Classic has been tied 1-1, as was the case prior to last night, the Game 3 winner has gone on to win it all 67.2 pct. (41 of 61) of the time…among series tied 1-1, the last three to win Game 3 (2021 Braves, 2020 Dodgers, 2017 Astros) have won the World Series…over a larger span, teams winning Game 3 to take a 2-1 lead have won the World Series 19 of the last 24 times since 1969.

• According to Sarah Langs of MLB.com, in any Postseason series with the 2-3-2 format, teams that have broken a 1-1 series tie with a Game 3 win in their home ballpark have gone on to win the series 61.7 pct. (29 of 47) of the time.

GAME 4 SIGNIFICANCE
Of the previous 93 times that a World Series has been 2-1, the team leading the series has gone on to win the Fall Classic 66.7 pct. (62 of 93) of the time, including the last five instances (2021 Braves, 2020 Dodgers, 2019 Nationals, 2018 Red Sox, 2017 Astros) and 11 of the last 14…the most recent teams to win it all after trailing 2-1 are the 2016 Cubs, 2014 Giants, 2013 Red Sox and 2003 Marlins.

• Of the previous 93 times that a World Series has been 2-1, the trailing team has won the following game to even the series 50.5 pct. (47 of 93) of the time and the team leading the series has won the following game to take a 3-1 lead 49.5 pct. (46 of 93) of the time…of the 46 teams that took a 3-1 series lead, 84.8 pct. (39 of 46) have gone on to win the World Series, including 12 of the last 13.

• Of the 47 teams trailing 2-1 who won the following game to even the World Series at 2-2, 51.1 pct. (24 of 47) have gone on to win it all…the most recent instances are the 2014 Giants, 2013 Red Sox, 2003 Marlins and 1996 Yankees.

• The only seven teams to trail 3-1 and come back to win the World Series are the 2016 Cubs, 1985 Royals, 1979 Pirates, 1968 Tigers, 1958 Yankees, 1925 Pirates and 1903 Boston Americans (won Games 5-8 to win a best-of-9 World Series).
