White Sox claim A.J. Alexy off waivers from Minnesota

CHICAGO – The Chicago White Sox have claimed right-handed pitcher A.J. Alexy off waivers from Minnesota.

Alexy, 24, spent most of the 2022 season with Class AAA Round Rock in the Texas Rangers organization, going 6-6 with a 6.28 ERA (63 ER/96.0 IP) and 103 strikeouts over 31 games (16 starts). He also made four relief appearances over four stints with the Rangers.

Alexy, 6-foot-4 and 195 pounds, was designated for assignment by Texas on December 9 and claimed off waivers by Washington on December 13. He was designated for assignment by the Nationals on January 4 and traded to the Twins on January 10 in exchange for right-hander Cristian Jiménez.

Alexy has gone 19-25 with a 3.93 ERA (173 ER/396.1 IP) and 465 strikeouts (10.56 per 9.0 IP) in 105 games (78 starts) over parts of six minor-league seasons. He also has appeared in nine MLB games (four starts) with Texas in 2021-22, going 4-2 with a 6.30 ERA (21 ER/30.0 IP) and 23 strikeouts.

Alexy originally was selected by the Dodgers in the 11th round of the June 2016 First-Year Player Draft before being traded to the Rangers on July 31, 2017 with infielders Willie Calhoun and Brendon Davis in exchange for right-hander Yu Darvish.

The White Sox 40-man roster increases to 40.
