Twins sign Josh Staumont

MINNEAPOLIS-ST. PAUL, MN – The Minnesota Twins announced today that they have signed right-handed pitcher Josh Staumont to a one-year contract for the 2024 season.

Staumont (STAH-mont), 30, appeared in 21 games (1 start) for the Kansas City Royals in 2023, posting a 5.40 ERA (20.0 IP, 12 ER) with 13 walks, 24 strikeouts and a 1.45 WHIP, while averaging 10.80 strikeouts-per-9.0 innings. The 6-foot-3, 200-pound right-hander began the season with Triple-A Omaha, tossing 4.0 scoreless innings and earning one save in four appearances prior to being recalled by the Royals on April 14. Staumont was placed on the 15-day Injured List on June 7 and missed the rest of the season with a neck strain.

The La Habra, California native was selected by the Royals in the second round of the 2015 First-Year Player Draft out of Azusa Pacific University. Staumont has spent his entire career to date in the Kansas City system, making his major league debut in 2019 and going 9-7 with a 4.01 ERA (168.1 IP, 75 ER), eight saves, 30 holds, 95 walks, 191 strikeouts, a 1.38 WHIP and a .221 opponent batting average in 169 games (1 start) over parts of five major league seasons.

The Twins now have 37 players on their 40-man roster: 18 pitchers, three catchers, eight infielders and eight outfielders.
