FORT MYERS, FL – The Minnesota Twins announced today that they have claimed right-handed pitcher Jhon Romero off waivers from the Washington Nationals.
Romero, 27, made his major league debut on September 24, 2021 for Washington and appeared in five games for the Nationals last season, posting a 4.50 ERA (4.0 IP, 2 ER) with no walks and three strikeouts. He also went 2-4 with a 2.62 ERA (55.0 IP, 16 ER), 11 walks, 69 strikeouts, a .237 opponent batting average and a 1.11 WHIP in 38 games combined between Double-A Harrisburg and Triple-A Rochester.
The Cartagena, Colombia native was originally signed by the Chicago Cubs as a minor league free agent on May 13, 2015. He has gone 7-9 with a 2.84 ERA (177.1 IP, 56 ER), 51 walks, 204 strikeouts, a .219 opponent batting average and a 1.11 WHIP in 119 career minor league relief appearances combined between the Cubs and Nationals systems. He will wear jersey number 50 for the Twins.
To make room for Romero on the 40-man roster, the Twins have placed Randy Dobnak on the 60-day Injured List with a right middle finger strain, an injury he sustained earlier in camp. He missed time with a similar injury last season.
