BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox today signed outfielder Adam Duvall to a one-year contract for the 2023 season. To make room for Duvall on the 40-man roster, Boston designated right-handed pitcher Matt Barnes for assignment.

Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom made the announcement.

Duvall, 34, is a four-time Gold Glove Award finalist (2016-18, ’21), winning the award as an outfielder in 2021 during the Atlanta Braves’ World Series championship season. That year, he hit a career-high 38 home runs and led the National League in RBI (113), one of three seasons in which he has recorded at least 30 home runs and 99 RBI (also 2016-17). A 2016 All-Star, Duvall has made 513 career starts in left field, 93 in right field, 68 in center field, 27 at first base, three at designated hitter, and one at third base. Since the start of 2016, he leads NL outfielders in defensive runs saved (59) and ranks second in assists (48).

Selected by the San Francisco Giants in the 11th round of the 2010 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Louisville, Duvall has hit .230 (637-for-2,770) with a .754 OPS, 163 home runs, and 478 RBI in 830 career games with the Giants (2014), Cincinnati Reds (2015-18), Miami Marlins (2021), and Braves (2018-22). In 2022, the right-handed batter hit .213 (61-for-287) with 16 doubles, one triple, and 12 home runs in 86 games for Atlanta while making 43 starts in center field, 26 in left field, and 11 in right field.

In 27 career Postseason games, Duvall has hit .200 (18-for-90) with five home runs and 18 RBI, including two home runs and six RBI during the 2021 World Series. He has four home runs in four career games at Fenway Park, including a three-homer performance on September 2, 2020. In the summer of 2009, Duvall played for Sanford of the New England Collegiate Baseball League.

Barnes, 32, made 44 appearances for the Red Sox in 2022, posting a 4.31 ERA (19 ER/39.2 IP) with eight saves. The right-hander owns a 4.07 ERA (195 ER/431.2 IP) with 47 saves and 547 strikeouts in 429 career appearances (two starts), all with Boston from 2014-22. Selected by the Red Sox with the 19th pick in the 2011 First-Year Player Draft, the Connecticut native ranks second in Red Sox history in both relief appearances and strikeouts in relief.
