Rangers recall RHP Glenn Otto from Round Rock, option RHP Jonathan Hernández to Round Rock

New York — The Texas Rangers announced prior to Monday night’s game against the Mets in New York that the club has recalled right-handed pitcher Glenn Otto from Triple-A Round Rock.  To make room for Otto on the active 26-man roster, the team has optioned right-handed pitcher Jonathan Hernández to Round Rock.

Otto will be in his second stint with the Rangers this season, as he allowed 10 runs/earned runs over 4 relief appearances and 8.1 innings during his first stint from June 30-July 22.  His last outing with Texas came on July 22 vs. Los Angeles-NL (2.0 IP, 5 R-ER).  He has spent the balance of the year, both on option and injury rehabilitation assignment, with Triple-A Round Rock, posting a 1-1 record with a 3.38 ERA (11 ER/29.1 IP) over 10 games/6 starts with 12.0 strikeouts per 9 innings and a 1.057 WHIP figure,  In his last 3 outings with the Express, all in relief, Otto has posted 6.1 scoreless innings with 8 strikeouts, as opponents are just 2-for-21 over that span.  He last pitched on Friday vs. Salt Lake (2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO, 23 pitches/16 strikes).

Otto is in his third Major League season, all with the Rangers since being acquired in a trade with the Yankees on July 29, 2021.  The Houston native was selected by New York-AL in the fifth round of the 2017 MLB Draft.

Hernández took the walk-off loss in yesterday’s 7-6, 13-inning defeat at Minnesota.  It was his only outing after being recalled from Round Rock on Saturday.  He is 1-2 with a 6.45 ERA over 26 relief appearances spanning two stints with the Rangers this season: Opening Day-June 4 and August 26-27.  With Round Rock this season, Hernández has a 1-1 record with 2 saves and a 1.35 ERA (4 ER/26.2 IP).

Following today’s transactions, the Rangers remain at the 40-man limit on the club’s Major League roster, along with three players (Jacob deGrom, Brett Martin, and Jake Odorizzi) on the 60-day Injured List.
