Rangers acquire outfielder Steven Duggar from San Francisco Giants in exchange for outfielder Willie Calhoun and cash considerations

RHP Spencer Patton designated for assignment

Arlington, Texas — The Texas Rangers today announced that the club has acquired outfielder Steven Duggar (pronounced DUH-ger) from the San Francisco Giants in exchange for outfielder Willie Calhoun and cash considerations.

Duggar has been activated from the 60-day Injured List. To make room for Duggar on the club’s 40-man roster, right-handed pitcher Spencer Patton has been designated for assignment. The Rangers will make another move to accommodate Duggar on the active 26-man roster when he reports to the club.

Duggar has been on the Giants’ 60-day Injured List since April 22 with a left oblique strain. The 28-year-old batted .194 (7-36) with 3 doubles and 4 RBI in 12 games for San Francisco prior to being placed on the Injured List, his 5th straight season to see Major League action with the Giants (2018-22). The left-handed hitting, right-handed throwing outfielder owns lifetime figures of .242 batting average, 14 home runs, 87 RBI, and 18 stolen bases over 254 MLB contests, making starts at the center (151), right (37), and left field (4) positions.

Duggar has spent his entire eight-year professional career in the Giants organization and has slashed .287/.378/.426/.804 (404-1409) with 26 home runs and 155 RBI in 362 games in the minor leagues, including .204 (10-49), one home run, and 5 RBI in 14 appearances as part of an injury rehabilitation assignment with Triple-A Sacramento this month. The South Carolina native was selected by San Francisco in the sixth round of the 2015 MLB Draft out of the University of Clemson, where he was teammates with Rangers outfielder Eli White for multiple seasons (2014-15).

Calhoun has been at Triple-A Round Rock since he was optioned by the Rangers following the club’s game on May 1 vs. Atlanta. He was designated for assignment on June 5 and assigned outright to Round Rock on June 10. Calhoun batted .136 in 18 games for Texas this season and has spent his entire Major League career with the Rangers, batting .241 with 32 home runs and 103 RBI over six seasons from 2017-22.

Patton posted a 3.86 ERA (3 ER/7.0 IP) over 7 relief outings during his lone stint with Texas from April 9-21. He was on the Rangers’ 10-day Injured List from April 22-May 10 with a right oblique strain before being reinstated and optioned to Round Rock (AAA) on May 11. The Rangers have 7 days to trade, release, or outright Patton to the minor leagues.

Following today’s transactions, the Rangers remain at the 40-man limit on the Major League roster, along with two players (Jonathan Hernández and Eli White) on the 60-day Injured List.
