Phillies sign Trea Turner

The Phillies have signed shortstop Trea Turner to an 11-year contract, President of Baseball Operations David Dombrowski announced today.

Turner, 29, has a career .302/.355/.487 slash line in 849 games and 3,737 plate appearances between the Washington Nationals (2015-21) and Los Angeles Dodgers (2021-22).  In 2022, Turner played in 160 games for the Dodgers and hit .298 with 101 runs scored, 39 doubles, 21 home runs and 100 RBI and went 27-for-30 in stolen base attempts (90.0%). A National League All-Star in each of the last two seasons, Turner was named All-MLB First Team in 2022 and won his first career Silver Slugger Award this past season.

Per Statcast data, Turnerā€™s average sprint speed of 30.3 feet per second ranked in the 99th percentile and fifth among the 582 qualified players in baseball last season.  For his career, he is 230-for-272 in stolen base attempts and his 84.6% success rate ranks third in MLB history (min. 250 attempts), behind only Carlos Beltran (86.4%) and Hall of Famer Tim Raines (84.7%).

In 2021, a season split between the Nationals and Dodgers, Turner won the NL batting title with a .328 average and led the league in stolen bases with 32.  Among 128 active players with at least 3,000 career plate appearances, Turnerā€™s .302 career batting average ranks fourth behind only Miguel Cabrera (.308), Jose Altuve (.307) and Mike Trout (.303).

Since 2020, Turner has slashed .316/.364/.514 over 1,613 plate appearances.  His 138 OPS+ in that span leads all shortstops and ranks 11th among all MLB players behind Aaron Judge (177), Juan Soto (170), Bryce Harper (164), Yordan Alvarez (159), Paul Goldschmidt (158), Freddie Freeman (150), JosĆ© RamĆ­rez (148), Manny Machado (147), Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (144) and Shohei Ohtani (143).       

Since 2018, Turner ranks first among NL players in fWAR and seventh among MLB players at 24.9, trailing only Mookie Betts (30.0), Trout (28.6), Judge (27.6), RamĆ­rez (27.5), Francisco Lindor (26.6) and Alex Bregman (25.0).  In that same period, among all major league players, he ranks first in stolen bases (149), second in hits (802), fourth in runs (453) and fifth in batting average (.301).

A 2019 World Series champion, Turner has made the postseason in five of his first full seven major league seasons and his 197 postseason plate appearances rank 24th among active players in MLB.  Turner was born in and resides in Boynton Beach, Fla., with his wife Kristen and their son, Beckham.

He will wear No. 7.
