Phillies sign Knebel

The Phillies have signed right-handed reliever Corey Knebel to a one-year year contract, President of Baseball Operations David Dombrowski announced today.

Knebel, 30, posted a 2.45 ERA and 0.97 WHIP, held opponents to a .176 batting average and recorded three saves in 27 total appearances for the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2021. He stranded all six inherited runners and struck out 30 of the 101 batters he faced. Per Statcast, his average fastball velocity of 96.3 mph was his highest since 2018.

A veteran of eight major league seasons with the Detroit Tigers (2014), Milwaukee Brewers (2015-20) and Los Angeles (2021), Knebel has appeared in 266 career games, posting a 3.23 ERA with 60 saves and 366 strikeouts in 262.0 innings. His career strikeout rate of 33.6% ranks eighth among all active pitchers with at least 1,000 batters faced. In 2017, Knebel was named to his first National League All-Star team, leading all NL pitchers with 76 appearances while ranking second (min. 75.0 IP) among all relievers with a 1.78 ERA.

Knebel has appeared in 16 career postseason games for Milwaukee in 2018 and Los Angeles in 2021, combining to post a 1.72 ERA and 0.70 WHIP while holding opponents to a .137/.214/.196 slash line with no home runs, four walks and 25 strikeouts in 15.2 innings. Thirteen of his 16 postseason appearances have been scoreless.

A native of Denton, Texas, and product of the University of Texas, Austin, Knebel was originally selected by Detroit in the first round (39th overall) in the 2013 MLB Draft.
