The Phillies have signed outfielder Nick Castellanos to a five-year contract, President of Baseball Operations David Dombrowski announced today.
Castellanos, who turned 30 earlier this month, appeared in 138 games last year for the Cincinnati Reds and slashed .309/.362/.576 with a .939 OPS. He had 38 doubles, 34 home runs, 95 runs scored and 100 RBI over 585 plate appearances.
A first time All-Star in 2021, Castellanos also took home his first Louisville Silver Slugger Award, was named All-MLB Second Team, was a finalist for the National League Hank Aaron Award and was the Reds’ recipient of the Heart and Hustle Award. Among all NL players, he ranked third in slugging percentage, tied for third in extra-base hits, fourth in doubles, batting average & OPS, fifth in total bases, sixth in RBI, tied for seventh in home runs, eighth in hits and tied for ninth in runs.
Since 2018, Castellanos has 153 doubles and 262 extra-base hits, both of which lead Major League Baseball over the last four seasons. Since 2018, Castellanos has slashed .290/.345/.527 over 2,169 plate appearances. There are only seven other players in MLB with at least 1,500 plate appearances that slash line or better since 2018: Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman, J.D. Martinez, Anthony Rendon, Juan Soto, Mike Trout and Christian Yelich. Since 2015, Castellanos has hit seven grand slams, which ranks third in the majors behind only Manny Machado (11) and Didi Gregorius (8).
A veteran of nine major league seasons, Castellanos has played in 1,086 combined games for the Detroit Tigers (2013-19), Chicago Cubs (2019) and Cincinnati Reds (2020-21). In 2019, he led the majors with 58 doubles, becoming just the 10th player in MLB history with that many in a season. That same season, he joined Hall of Famers Hank Greenberg (1934) and Joe Medwick (1937) as the only right-handed hitters in history with at least 55 doubles and 25 home runs in a single season.
Castellanos will wear No. 8.
To make room for Castellanos on the 40-man roster, infielder Luke Williams was designated for assignment.
