Phillies announce roster moves

Prior to game two of today’s doubleheader against the New York Mets, the Phillies made the following roster moves:

  • Selected the contract of left-handed pitcher Michael Plassmeyer (#49) from triple-A Lehigh Valley
  • Recalled right-handed pitcher Erich Uelmen from Lehigh Valley and placed him on the 60-day injured list with a right flexor strain
  • Optioned right-handed pitcher Luis Ortiz to the spring training complex

Phillies President of Baseball Operations David Dombrowski made the announcements.

Plassmeyer, 26, went 2-0 with a 1.52 ERA (4 ER, 23.2 IP), 27 strikeouts, nine walks and one save across his final five appearances with Lehigh Valley this season. Overall, he appeared in 19 games (17 starts) between high-A Jersey Shore (3) and the IronPigs (16), going 3-4 with 83 strikeouts in 75.2 innings pitched. Plassmeyer made his major league debut with the Phillies on Aug. 23, 2022, against the Cincinnati Reds. The St. Louis, Mo., native posted a 3.68 ERA (3 ER, 7.1 IP) with seven strikeouts and one walk in two relief appearances with Philadelphia last year.

Originally selected by the Seattle Mariners in the fourth round of the 2018 MLB Draft, Plassmeyer was acquired by the Phillies in a trade with the San Francisco Giants on June 8, 2022, and re-signed with the club as a minor league free agent on June 23, 2023.

Uelmen, 27, made 14 appearances for the IronPigs this season, going 1-2 with one save, a 4.02 ERA (7 ER, 15.2 IP) and eight walks to 14 strikeouts. He also had one outing each with double-A Reading (1.0 IP) and single-A Clearwater (1.0 IP, rehab). Uelmen last appeared with the Phillies on May 19 against the Chicago Cubs, tossing 1.0 inning in relief.

The Las Vegas, Nev., native was selected by the Cubs in the fourth round of the 2017 MLB Draft and was acquired by the Phillies via trade on Jan. 4, 2023.

Ortiz, 28, threw 1.0 scoreless inning with two strikeouts in game one of today’s doubleheader and has posted a 3.32 ERA (7 ER, 19.0 IP) with 16 strikeouts, five walks and one save in 14 relief appearances across six stints with the Phillies this season.

He was selected in the first round (30th overall) of the 2014 MLB Draft by the Texas Rangers and was claimed off waivers by the Phillies from the San Francisco Giants on Nov. 9, 2022.
