TEAM NOTES

TONIGHT’S MATCHUP

Tonight, the New York Islanders host the Minnesota Wild in the first of two matchups between the two clubs this season. The last time these teams met was February 28, 2023, when the Islanders captured a point in the shootout at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. Tonight’s matchup is the Islanders’ third of the season against a Central Division opponent (1-1-0). The Islanders collected points for the fifth straight game in Saturday night’s overtime loss to the Carolina Hurricanes (3-0-2 since Oct. 26). Tonight, they will look to earn their first home-ice victory against Minnesota since Feb. 10, 2019.

SHORTHANDED

TALLY Islanders forward Simon Holmstrom has scored a goal in each of his last two games, the first time in his career he has scored in back-to-back contests. Saturday night, the 22-year-old scored the Islanders’ second shorthanded goal in three games, and the first of his career, to help the team collect a point in overtime vs. the Carolina Hurricanes. Seven of the Tranas, SWE native’s nine career goals have been scored on home ice. Saturday night, the Islanders became the first Eastern Conference team to record at least two shorthanded goals on home ice this season. SAVES Islanders netminder Ilya Sorokin turned aside 42 of 46 shots on Saturday night. Sorokin is one of nine NHL netminders who have made at least 42 saves in a game this season. Saturday night, he became the first goaltender this season to register more than 40 saves twice.

BLUELINE GOALS

Islanders defenseman Noah Dobson scored his third goal of the season on Saturday night. It was his 33rd career goal, tying Adrian Aucoin for 11th-most in club history by a defenseman. Dobson is the first Islander defenseman to record 10 points (three goals, seven assists) through the first ten games of the season since James Wisniewski did so in 2010-11. From Oct. 17 – 26, Dobson matched his career-best as he recorded a five-game point streak (two goals, four assists). Dobson also enters tonight’s matchup with 98 assists and can become the second-youngest defenseman in Islanders franchise history to reach 100 in his career, joining Denis Potvin. Dobson and Potvin (219) are the only Islanders blueliners to tally at least 98 assists before their 24th birthday. The Summerside, PEI native also leads the Islanders in TOI/game through ten games this season, with 25:04 average time on ice per game. He recorded over 25 minutes of ice time in five straight games from Oct. 24 – Nov. 2, the first Islander to do so since Travis Hamonic in 2016. This season, Dobson also became the first Islander to skate at least 24 minutes in eight straight games since 2014 (also Hamonic, nine).

SCORING FIRST

Saturday night against Carolina, the Islanders improved to 5-0-3 when scoring the first goal this season. They have scored first in eight of their ten games in 2023-24 and have collected at least one point each time they have found the back of the net first. Saturday’s contest was the fifth consecutive game that the Islanders opened the score. The Islanders have also outscored opponents 10-3 in the first period through ten games. Their three goals allowed in the first frame are the fewest in the NHL.

QUICK SCORING

Defenseman Ryan Pulock recorded his first goal of the season on Thursday in Washington, just 22 seconds into regulation. Pulock tied Tomas Jonsson for third-fastest game-opening goal by an Islanders blueliner in franchise history (N. Leddy 0:13, D. Potvin 0:16). It was Pulock’s ninth career game-winning goal and first since Dec. 23, 2022, and the earliest game-winner scored in franchise history, breaking Clark Gillies’ record (0:34 on Feb. 22, 1976).
