NHL Preview: Carolina Hurricanes (41-12-8) at Montréal Canadiens (26-33-4)

CAROLINA HURRICANES NOTES:

LAST GAME
The Hurricanes posted a 6-0 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning at PNC Arena on Sunday, as Carolina went 4-for-5 on the power play. Jesperi Kotkaniemi registered a career-high five points (1g, 4a), and Teuvo Teravainen (3g) scored his second career hat trick. Shayne Gostisbehere (1g, 2a) and Martin Necas (3a) each tallied three points, with all three of Gostisbehere’s points coming on the man-advantage. Andrei Svechnikov also scored the opening and eventual game-winning goal, as Frederik Andersen stopped all 14 shots faced for his first shutout of the season.

HURRICANES vs. CANADIENS SERIES NOTES
— Carolina is facing Montreal in the first of three meetings between the teams during the 2022-23 season. The Hurricanes return to Bell Centre on 4/1.

— The Hurricanes and Canadiens are meeting for the 210th time in their regular-season histories. Carolina holds a 79-103-20-7 overall record, including a 31-59-7-5 road record and a 43-30-5-7 record since relocation.

— The Hurricanes lead the season series 1-0-0 in 2022-23 (Canadiens: 0-1-0), and they are 12-1-1 in the teams’ last 14 matchups dating back to 3/23/17 (Montreal: 2-10-2).

— Carolina registered a 6-2 win over Montreal at PNC Arena on 2/16. Seth Jarvis (3g) scored his first career hat trick, and Andrei Svechnikov tallied three assists as Antti Raanta stopped 20 of 22 shots faced in net.

— Sebastian Aho has recorded 15 points (8g, 7a) in 15 career regular-season games against the Canadiens. He was also tendered an offer sheet by Montreal on 7/1/19, but Carolina matched the offer six days later.

— Brent Burns has earned 16 points (4g, 12a) in 20 career regular-season games against Montreal.

— Jesperi Kotkaniemi was selected third overall by the Canadiens in the 2018 NHL Draft and recorded 62 points (22g, 40a) in 171 games with the Canadiens from 2018-21. Kotkaniemi signed an offer sheet with Carolina on 8/28/21 and was acquired when Montreal declined to match the offer.

— Paul Stastny has registered 22 points (12g, 10a) in 28 career regular-season games against the Canadiens.

— Teuvo Teravainen has posted 17 points (7g, 10a) in 18 career regular-season games against Montreal.

— Acquired from STL along with Dominik Bokk and a seventh-round pick in the 2021 NHL Draft (Nikita Guslistov) in exchange for Justin Faulk and a fifth-round pick in the 2020 NHL Draft (Pavel Novak), Joel Edmundson skated in 68 games with the Hurricanes during the 2019-20 season, posting 20 points (7g, 13a) and a team-high 72 penalty minutes. Edmundson was traded to MTL in exchange for a fifth-round pick in the 2020 NHL Draft (Ben Meehan).

— Nick Suzuki’s brother, Ryan Suzuki, was selected by Carolina in the first round (28th overall) of the 2019 NHL Draft and is a prospect in the Hurricanes’ organization.

— Montreal Assistant Coach Trevor Letowski signed with Carolina as a free agent and tallied 26 points (11g, 15a) in 136 games with the Hurricanes from 2006-08.

— Canadiens Assistant Coach Stéphane Robidas is the father of Hurricanes prospect Justin Robidas. Justin was drafted by Carolina in the fifth round (147th overall) of the 2021 NHL Draft.
