NHL Preview: Carolina Hurricanes (39-11-8) at Vegas Golden Knights (35-19-6)

CAROLINA HURRICANES NOTES:

LAST GAME
The Hurricanes suffered a 3-2 loss against the Anaheim Ducks at PNC Arena on Saturday, despite outshooting the Ducks 53-16 in the contest. Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Jesper Fast each scored for Carolina, while Brett Pesce, Jaccob Slavin and Jordan Staal each tallied an assist. Frederik Andersen made 13 saves in net, suffering just his second loss in nine decisions.

HURRICANES vs. GOLDEN KNIGHTS SERIES NOTES
— Carolina is facing Vegas in the first of two meetings between the teams during the 2022-23 season. The Golden Knights will travel to PNC Arena on 3/11.

— The Hurricanes and Golden Knights are meeting for the ninth time in their regular-season histories. Carolina holds a 5-3-0-0 record, including a 3-1-0-0 road record.

— Carolina swept the season series 2-0-0 in 2021-22 (Vegas: 0-1-1), and the Hurricanes have won each of the teamsā€™ last three matchups.

— The Hurricanes posted a 4-2 win over the Golden Knights at T-Mobile Arena on 11/16/21. Sebastian Aho (1g, 1a), Martin Necas (2a), Teuvo Teravainen (2a) and Vincent Trocheck (1g, 1a) tallied two points, while Antti Raanta stopped 21 of 23 shots faced in net.

— Carolina earned a 4-3 overtime win over Vegas on PNC Arena on 1/25/22. Sebastian Aho scored two goals, including the overtime winner, and Andrei Svechnikov added two assists as Frederik Andersen made 26 saves in net.

— Sebastian Aho has registered nine points (6g, 3a) in seven career regular-season games against the Golden Knights.

— Paul Stastny tallied 80 points (30g, 50a) in 121 games over two seasons with the Golden Knights from 2018-20. He was traded to WPG in exchange for Carl Dahlstrom and a fourth-round pick in the 2022 NHL Draft (Noah Laba) on 10/9/20.

— Derek Stepan has earned 11 points (5g, 6a) in 13 career regular-season games against Vegas.

— Teuvo Teravainen has posted seven points (2g, 5a) in eight career regular-season games against the Golden Knights.

— Nicolas Roy was selected by Carolina in the fourth round, 96th overall, of the 2015 NHL Draft and skated in seven NHL games with the Hurricanes in 2018. He also tallied 74 points (28g, 46a) in 139 AHL games with Charlotte from 2017-19, helping the team to a Calder Cup championship in 2019. Roy was traded to Vegas along with a fifth-round pick in the 2021 NHL Draft (Oscar Plandowski) in exchange for Erik Haula on 6/27/19.

— Golden Knights Goaltending Coach Sean Burke made 281 appearances with Hartford/Carolina from 1992-97, posting a 107-131-29 record, 3.09 goals-against average, .903 save percentage and 11 shutouts. He holds the franchise record for assists by a goaltender (12) and ranks fourth all-time in wins and tied for fourth in shutouts. Acquired from New Jersey along with Eric Weinrich in exchange for Bobby Holik and a second-round pick in the 1993 NHL Draft (Jay Pandolfo) on 8/28/92, Burke was traded to Vancouver along with Geoff Sanderson and Enrico Ciccone in exchange for Martin Gelinas and Kirk McLean on 1/3/98.

— Vegas Assistant Coach John Stevens played 44 games as a defenseman for the Whalers from 1991-94, recording eight assists. He joined the organization as a free agent during the 1990 offseason and left in free agency during the 1996 offseason.

ROAD SCHOLARS
Carolina is entering Wednesdayā€™s meeting with Vegas on a five-game road win streak (1/12-2/14) and six-game road point streak (1/7-2/14: 5-0-1). The Hurricanesā€™ road win streak is tied for the longest such streak since relocation (also 3/23/98-4/6/98, 10/22/05-11/15/05, 3/15/11-4/8/11), and they have outscored their opponents 22-9 over that stretch. Carolina has also earned a point in 18 of its last 19 road games (11/14-2/14: 13-1-5, .816), with a 12-1-2 record and a league-high .867 points percentage away from home since 11/29.

GOLDEN KNIGHTS LAST GAME RECAP
February 27 ā€“ Vegas Golden Knights 0, Colorado Avalanche 3
The Golden Knights (35-19-6) were defeated by the Colorado Avalanche (34-19-4), 3-0, on Monday night at Ball Arena. Mikko Rantanen found the back of the net 14 seconds into the first period and the Avalanche carried the 1-0 lead into intermission. Rantanen scored again in the second to give Colorado a 2-0 advantage and a late empty-net goal from Nathan MacKinnon sealed the win for the home team.

Against the Hurricanes
The contest between the Golden Knights and the Hurricanes is the first of two this season. Carolina is the final team Vegas has not faced yet this season and these teams will meet twice in the next 10 days. Golden Knights are 3-2-3 all-time against the Hurricanes and will look to secure their first win since Jan. 31, 2020 and first win at T-Mobile since Nov. 3, 2018. The last time these teams met, the Golden Knights overcame a two-goal deficit with goals by Brett Howden and Nicolas Hague in the third period to force overtime at 3- 3. However, Vegas was unable to secure the comeback win as Sebastian Aho scored to give Carolina the victory.
