NHL Preview: Calgary Flames (23-17-9) at Seattle Kraken (28-14-5)

CALGARY FLAMES NOTES:

CALGARY FLAMES [1] vs. CHICAGO BLACKHAWKS [5]
The Calgary Flames finished up a four-game homestand by welcoming the Chicago Blackhawks to the Scotiabank Saddledome on Thursday night. The Blackhawks drew first blood late in the first with Taylor Raddysh netting his 13th of the season. But in the dying embers of the opening period, Jonathan Huberdeau made a slick move around Jake McCabe and deked out Jaxson Stauber to burry his 10th of the season in style and draw the Flames level after 20. In the second, a Boris Katchouk shot would take a deflection to restore Chicagoā€™s lead and they would add two more goals in the frame to go up 4-1 through 40. The Flames tried to battle back in the third, outshooting Chicago 18-6, but would ultimately fall 5-1.

The Flames struck early with Tyler Toffoli opening the scoring, netting his 15th of the season to give the Flames a 1-0 advantage. They would hold that lead until the ladder stages of the first where Ryan Donato evened the game at the 18:45 mark to knot the teams at one going into the intermission. Calgary and Seattle would trade goals in the second with Jamie Oleksiak scoring just 1:14 into the period to give the Kraken the lead before Nazem Kadri would tie the game on the power play and the clubs remained deadlocked at twos through 40. THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW
ā€¢ Tonightā€™s matchup is the final game the Kraken and the Flames will play against each other this season. The teams have previously split their first two meetings ā€“ the Kraken defeated the Flames 5-4 on Nov. 1 in Calgary and fell to them 3-2 in Seattle on Dec. 28.

ā€¢ Entering play Thursday, the Kraken led the Pacific Division in points (61, tied) and points percentage (.649). The teamā€™s plus-27 goal differential this season also led the Pacific Division entering play Thursday and ranked eighth in the NHL.

ā€¢ The Kraken have not allowed a power-play goal for five consecutive games, going a perfect 13-for-13 during that span. If they were to remain perfect on the penalty kill tonight, it would tie the franchise record for consecutive games without allowing a power-play goal. The team previously went six straight games from Oct. 29 to Nov. 11 without allowing a power-play goal. Entering play Thursday, the Kraken were one of three teams (St. Louis, Washington) to remain perfect on the penalty kill since Jan. 16, the start of the Krakenā€™s streak.

ā€¢ With 47 games played, the Kraken have already surpassed their win (27) and point (60) totals from last season.

ā€¢ Since the start of the New Year, the Kraken are leading the league in wins (10, tied), points (21), goals (55) and goals per game (4.23). They are one of only two teams (Edmonton) to be averaging four or more goals per game in 2023.

ā€¢ When Morgan Geekie and Daniel Sprong are on the ice together during five-on-five play this season, the Kraken are outscoring their opponents 14-6 according to Natural Stat Trick.

ā€¢ Matty Beniers has drawn 13 penalties and been assessed one penalty this season. His plus-12 penalty differential was tied for the seventh-best mark in the NHL entering play Thursday.

ā€¢ Entering play Thursday, Yanni Gourde was tied for 12th in the NHL with 21 penalties drawn this season.

ā€¢ Despite only playing in 47 games this season, the Kraken are the first team to have scored at least eight goals in a game four different times since the Pittsburgh Penguins also has four eight-goal games in 2011-12.
