NHL Morning Skate – Jan. 6, 2022

* Bryan Rust recorded 2-1—3 after a five-point performance Sunday to lead the Penguins (19-8-5, 43 points) to their first multi-goal comeback victory of the season as Pittsburgh extended the NHL’s longest active win streak to nine games.* Jack Campbell and the Maple Leafs continued their success at Scotiabank Arena Wednesday, with the former tying the NHL lead in home wins this season.

* The Wild (19-10-2, 40 points) are set to visit TD Garden for the first time since Nov. 23, 2019 to take on the Bruins (17-10-2, 36 points) in a contest broadcast nationally in the U.S. on ESPN.

RUST LEADS PENGUINS TO NINTH STRAIGHT VICTORY
Bryan Rust tallied 2-1—3 to follow up his five-point performance Sunday, while Sidney Crosby (1-1—2) and Evan Rodrigues (1-1—2) each scored in a 12-second span to propel the Penguins (19-8-5, 43 points) to their ninth straight win, marking their first multi-goal comeback victory of the season. Pittsburgh matched Carolina (9-0-0 from Oct. 14 – Nov. 3, 2021) for the longest win streak by a team in 2021-22.

* Rust, who has 5-3—8 over his last two outings, became the sixth Penguins skater in the past 20 years to record eight or more points over a two-game span. The others: James Neal (4-4—8 in 2013-14 & 3-5—8 in 2011-12), Evgeni Malkin (3-5—8 in 2011-12), Crosby (5-3—8 in 2009-10, 2-8—10 in 2006-07 & 2-6—8 in 2006-07), Aleksey Morozov (4-4—8 in 2002-03) and Mario Lemieux (2-7—9 in 2001-02).

* Crosby and Rodrigues, who found the back of the net 12 seconds apart, combined for the fastest goals by the club since Dec. 16, 2017 (0:09 from Olli Maatta & Crosby).

DID YOU KNOW?
Jake Guentzel (0-2—2), who assisted on Sidney Crosby’s game-tying tally, wrote a book report about the Penguins captain while in school. It marked the 43rd career assist that Guentzel has collected on a Crosby goal – the most by any Penguins player since he entered the League in 2016-17 and the fourth most by any player who has factored on Crosby’s career goal total.

CAMPBELL COLLECTS ANOTHER WIN AT SCOTIABANK ARENA

Jack Campbell made 28 saves and William Nylander (0-2—2) factored on two of Toronto’s four goals as the Maple Leafs improved to 4-0-0 in their last four games and earned their 14th home win of the season, the second most in the NHL behind the Panthers (18).

* Campbell collected his 12th victory at Scotiabank Arena in 2021-22, matching Sergei Bobrovsky for the most home wins among all goaltenders.

WILDBRUINS READY FOR SPOTLIGHT ON ESPN

The Bruins (17-10-2, 36 points) welcome the Wild (19-10-2, 40 points) to TD Garden as the two clubs clash in a contest broadcast nationally in the U.S. on ESPN. Boston, which skated to 5-1 and 5-3 victories on Jan. 2 and Jan. 4, is looking to score five-plus goals in at least three consecutive games for the eighth time in 25 years and second this season (3 GP from Nov. 13-20, 2021).

Kirill Kaprizov, fresh off a three-point performance at the 2022 Discover NHL Winter Classic, can become the first player in Wild history to notch three-plus points in three consecutive games. Two other players have also achieved the feat this season: Connor McDavid (3 GP from Oct. 16-21, 2021) and Leon Draisaitl (3 GP from Nov. 1-5, 2021).

THORNTON, VORACEK SET FOR MILESTONE GAMES
Panthers forward Joe Thornton (429-1,106—1,535 in 1,699 GP) and Blue Jackets forward Jakub Voracek (217-544—761 in 999 GP) are each set to record milestone accomplishments when Florida (22-7-4, 48 points) and Columbus (15-15-1, 31 points) hit the road Thursday.

* Thornton, with four goals in 19 games for Florida this season and one shy of his total in 2020-21 with Toronto (44 GP), is set to become the sixth player in NHL history to appear in at least 1,700 career contests. In addition to his tenures with the Panthers and Maple Leafs, Thornton skated in 1,104 games for the Sharks as well as 532 contests with the Bruins.

* Voracek leads the Blue Jackets in assists this season (1-22-23 in 31 GP) and will become just the second player from the 2007 NHL Draft to reach the 1,000-game milestone, joining Patrick Kane (1,058 GP). After splitting time with Philadelphia (727 GP) and Columbus (272 GP) in his career, Voracek will emerge as the only active Czechia-born player to skate in 1,000 career outings.
AVALANCHE LOOK TO MATCH FRANCHISE MARK WITH ANOTHER HOME WIN

The Avalanche (19-8-2, 40 points) return to Ball Arena Thursday, where Nathan MacKinnon and company have won each of their last nine games dating to Nov. 11 – outscoring the opposition 49-21 over that span.

* Colorado can also join Florida (11 GP from Oct. 14 – Nov. 24, 2021) as the second team to record a double-digit home win streak this season. The last campaign to feature multiple teams each register a home win streak of 10-plus contests was 2017-18, when four clubs accomplished the feat (TOR: 13 GP, PIT: 11 GP, WSH: 10 GP & COL: 10 GP).
